Looks Like “Bottoms” Promises One of the Most Satisfyingly Ridiculous Comedies of 2023

June 6, 2023
News
Ayo Edebiri, emma seligman, Rachel Sennott

Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott reunite after their critically acclaimed indie dark comedy hit, Shiva Baby, to bring a much more bombastic, more absurd, yet still unflinchingly resonant high school comedy with Bottoms. Queerly echoing Superbad and Not Another Teen Movie, Sennott co-stars with Ayo Edebiri as “bottoms” of the social hierarchy at their school who devise a plan to up their cache via a female-only self-defense/fight club in order to get with their probable prom queens crushes.

As if that wasn’t ludicrous enough for a comedy, the football players never take off their uniforms, the principal is explicitly problematic, and former NFL star Marshawn Lynch essentially plays himself as a teacher. If there was a way to up the ante from Sennott’s last movie, Bodies Bodies Bodies, Bottoms might have hit the mark with  unbridled sarcasm, satire, and silliness.

See all of this for yourself in the very first trailer, that just happens to be a red band trailer for Bottoms here, then look for it in select theaters Aug. 25th, then more cities Sept. 1st.

Pick of the Day: Made of Bugs with Tim Platt (in LA) 7/23

July 1, 2022
News
Ayo Edebiri, girl god, joe rumrill, la comedy, sketch comedy, tim platt

One of NYC’s comedy treasures is the weird and wonderful talents and comedy of one Tim Platt. Purveyor and performer of charmingly off beat shows including his musical variety show Made of Bugs and the wild Evening of Wedding Speeches where comics give the most unhinged wedding speeches they can, Platt has earned a special place in NYC comedy that you ought to get to any time his putting anything up.

For LA folks, Tim will be making a very special stop at The Yard Theater to bring Made of Bugs to the City of Angels on Sat. Jul. 23rd at 7PM PT. Not only will Tim be bringing himself, but the likes of Ayo Edebiri (that, by now, you’ve should have seen kill it on The Bear), Girl God (your new favorite sketch group), and one of the newer NYC-to-LA transplants/sweet rapscallion, Joe Rumrill will be joining in for the evening.

Tickets are only $10 and you best go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Daniel Lee Livestream Comedy Fundraiser Extravaganza 1/23

Well, it’s officially official in a way that can’t be more official. Trump is no longer POTUS and Joe Biden has been sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. Still, that doesn’t mean everything is solved. If anything, we’ve got a long, long way to go before problems at the federal, state, and local level are taken care of.

That’s why Sarah Squirm is co-hosting yet another grand live-stream comedy fundraiser, this time for progressive candidate Daniel Lee’s campaign for California State Senate. Per usual, Squirm has assembled a fiery line-up of folks we love watching and dearly miss seeing on stage. That includes: co-host Ayo Edibiri, Yassir Lester, Jo Firestone, Nori Reed, DJ Douggpound, Jak Knight, Camirin Farmer, Larry Owens, and Grace Kuhlenschmidt as well as musical guest Fat Tony.

Access to the live-stream this weekend is via paying what you can, leaving little excuse to not catch this live-stream. The Daniel Lee Livestream Comedy Fundraiser is set to stream on Sat. Jan. 23rd at 7PM PT/10PM ET. Get more details, donate, etc. here.

We told you that there would be plenty of big time comedy benefit shows for the Georgia Runoffs and, lordy lordy, there sure are. This latest one is being put up by the one and only Padma Lakshmi that’s very explicit in this regard by being called, “Padma Puts on a Virtual Comedy Show for the Georgia Runoff Elections: An Evening to Benefit FairFight”.

Stacey Abrams’ FairFight was instrumental in registering voters and contributing to Biden’s 2020 Election win and will undoubtedly be crucial in the upcoming special Georgia Senate Runoffs.

So, they tapped Padma for a live benefit show and she, in turn, got one hell of a line-up that includes:

Hasan Minhaj, Phoebe Robinson, Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Peretti, Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon, Benito Skinner, Mike Birbiglia, John Early, Roy Wood Jr., Julio Torres, Michelle Buteau, Patton Oswalt, Aparna Nancherla, Caleb Hearon, Wanda Sykes, Joel Kim Booster, Tituss Burgess, Meg Stalter, Patti Harrison, Nikki Glaser, Ayo Edebiri, Jo Firestone, Amber Ruffin, Dulce Sloan, Naomi Ekperigin, W. Kamau Bell, Mitra Jouhari, Sydnee Washington, Marie Faustin, and Andy Cohen.

There will also be music from King Princess, Perfume Genius, Waxahatchee, Brittany Howard, Local Natives, Aloe Blacc, and Cautious Clay.

Lastly, the evening’s virtual festivities will be hosted by none other than the Las Culturistas themselves, Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang.

Reads like a festival line-up, doesn’t it? Well, we still can’t do that in person right now, but you can enjoy this gigantic Padma Puts on a Virtual Comedy Show comedy live-stream on Thurs. Dec. 17th at 6PM PT/9PM ET at youtube.com/padmalakshmi and donate to FairFight here.

Pick of the Day: Rise Los Angeles 10/9

There are so many issues on the table right now that it’s almost too easy that such monumental issues like climate change can be easily forgotten about. Thus, plenty of folks running for public office are taking up the mantle of pushing the tenets of The Green New Deal and combatting climate change in addition to every other fight that needs to be fought and need support.

That’s why there’s a huge benefit live-stream this Friday, Oct. 9th at 7PM PT/10PM ET presented by Sunrise Movement LA to benefit the campaigns of Green New Deal candidates at all levels of government for Los Angeles. To support them, a very stellar, stacked line-up including Amy Poehler, Jane Fonda, Aidy Bryant, Joaquin Phoenix, Demi Adejuyigbe, Julio Torres, Ayo Edebiri, and more will be performing virtually along with hosts Sandy Honig and Mitra Jouhari of Three Busy Debras fame.

Make a donation here, so you won’t miss out on Rise Los Angeles this Friday night.

Please Enjoy Demi Adejuyigbe’s Mischievous Cupid Music Video for Eric Slick’s “Over It”

News

In a time where dating and romance have been vastly limited due to lockdown/social distancing/etc., a world where there was a real life Cupid might be nice.

That said, a real life Cupid might be more bent on mischief than one might initially think and the effects of Cupid arrow might be a little more fleeting than in the fairy tales. That’s how comedy multi-hyphenate Demi Adejuyigbe imagines his version of Cupid for the music video for Eric Slick’s latest single “Over It” (that just happens to include so many fun comedy folks including Ayo Edebiri, Lou Wilson, Kate Comer, Natalie Morales, Mike Cabellon, Ify Nwadiwe, Gabriel Gundacker, Mia Vicino, Ben Cahn, Addie Weyrich, and Nick Kocher).

Though the video takes place in a world that isn’t going through a pandemic, the end of the video feels pretty cathartic for everything we’re going through right now. Please enjoy it here.
