Looks Like “Bottoms” Promises One of the Most Satisfyingly Ridiculous Comedies of 2023
Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott reunite after their critically acclaimed indie dark comedy hit, Shiva Baby, to bring a much more bombastic, more absurd, yet still unflinchingly resonant high school comedy with Bottoms. Queerly echoing Superbad and Not Another Teen Movie, Sennott co-stars with Ayo Edebiri as “bottoms” of the social hierarchy at their school who devise a plan to up their cache via a female-only self-defense/fight club in order to get with their probable prom queens crushes.
As if that wasn’t ludicrous enough for a comedy, the football players never take off their uniforms, the principal is explicitly problematic, and former NFL star Marshawn Lynch essentially plays himself as a teacher. If there was a way to up the ante from Sennott’s last movie, Bodies Bodies Bodies, Bottoms might have hit the mark with unbridled sarcasm, satire, and silliness.
See all of this for yourself in the very first trailer, that just happens to be a red band trailer for Bottoms here, then look for it in select theaters Aug. 25th, then more cities Sept. 1st.
