The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 161: Alan Kliffer & Planting Comedy Seeds and Watching Them Grow

April 26, 2023
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report

Alan Kliffer, the esteemed Artistic Director of Asylum NYC (as well as a million other things including pioneering a national high school improv program), joins us for this week’s TCB Field Report to give us the lowdown on NYC comedy. Specifically, we dive into NYC being on the precipice of a wave of comedy theaters opening/reopening focused on improv and sketch, which has been kind of wandering all around NYC since lockdown ended. Kliffer already has so many exciting things in the works all throughout North America (and even at The Edinburgh Fringe this Summer).

Pick of the Day: 69 Filthy Minutes with Steph Tolev (in NYC) 3/10

March 4, 2022

If you’re in and around LA comedy at all, it should be no mystery or surprise to you that Steph Tolev is one of the funniest people in the scene. Her brash, bold, and yet very vulnerable comedy that’s delightfully accented by Steph’s one-of-a-kind voice has been such a joy to Los Angeles for years now and we’ll never forget that she is very likely the only comedian that had a show done for her where dozens of her favorite comics in town did an impersonation of her in tribute.

So, NYC is going to get their own bit of Steph next week as she’ll be doing a very special evening of sketch and stand-up at Asylum NYC on Thurs. Mar. 10th at 7:30PM ET. Very specifically she’ll be doing a special 69 minutes that Steph would like it to be very clear that it’s “not PG” (in case the “69” didn’t make it clear).

Tickets are $18.81 (including fees) and you can (and very much should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Stamptown (in NYC) 1/27 & 1/29

We’re not quite back at March 2020 in terms of live comedy being completely shut down, but there is a dreadful similarity to this week and the last couple, no?

To remedy that, let’s look further into the future for things that we were so glad that are back when lockdown lifted and will be thrilled to see once more (hopefully) in a few more weeks. Those include such things as one of comedy’s wildest shows, Stamptown. One of the only internationally traveling comedy showcases that rounds up clowns, sketch folks, stand-ups, musical comedians, and more genre defying comedic performers to do some of the wildest things anyone has seen on stage.

Currently, host/ringleader Zach Zucker/Jack Tucker is in the UK, but will be returning to NYC for two shows in January. Specifically, Stamptown will be at Union Hall on Thurs. Jan. 27th at 7:30PM ET & The Asylum NYC on Sat. Jan. 29th at 9:30PM ET. The line-ups aren’t announced yet, but you can rest assured that it will be jam packed with comedians you need to see as it has been for years.

Tickets are $20 a pop ($15 for Union Hall right now) and you can and should get them here and here respectively.
