The Second Season of A Black Lady Sketch Show Is Just a Few Weeks Away

Though the arrival of COVID-19 in America immediately halted production on the second season of A Black Lady Sketch Show, Robin Thede has found her way through picking back up to finish that second season in 2021 and having it set to premiere on April 23rd.

This actually might mark the first non-live sketch comedy series to return from the before times. Plenty of late night shows have done various bits and sketches (and SNL has paid audience members in order to tape episodes in studio), but there has been a long dry spell for scripted, non-live-broadcast sketch comedy for however long the last year has been.

See the season 2 announcement teaser for A Black Lady Sketch Show here, then look for new episodes starting Fri. Apr. 23rd.

Robin Thede Signs Overall Deal at Warner Bros. TV Group

From The Nightly Show to The Rundown with Robin Thede to A Black Lady Sketch Show, Robin Thede has steadily risen as a power player in comedy television. Her profile just got raised even higher as she just signed an overall deal to develop programming for Warner Bros. TV properties over the next several years. Thede’s done so many things over the years

Not only does Thede deserve such a deal for her track record over the last several years, but this is definitely the sort of the equity that Hollywood needs in putting BIPOC in true positions of power. It wasn’t too long ago that Larry Wilmore got put in a similar position allowing him to bring Issa Rae to HBO to make the sensation that is Insecure.

So, we’re incredibly intrigued to see what Thede will get on to TV/computer screens next in the not so distant future.

Sketch comedy at HBO is getting a brand new look come Aug. 2nd.

That’s when A Black Lady Sketch Show, a sketch comedy show from Robin Thede and Issa Rae, premieres. Before now, Mr. Show and various shows created by and starring Tracey Ullman were what represented sketch at HBO.

Now, with a cast boasting Thede, Rae, Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle Dennis and Quinta Brunson along with guest stars Angela Bassett, David Alan Grier, Tia Mowry, Aja Naomi King, Lena Waithe, Patti Labelle, Amber Riley, Yvonne Orji, Loretta Devine, Gina Torres, Jermaine Fowler, Lil’ Rel, Deon Cole, Natasha Rothwell, Marsai Martin, Khandi Alexander, Laverne Cox, Yvette Nicole Brown, Larry Wilmore, and Kelly Rowland, A Black Lady Sketch Show will be a welcome new wrinkle in HBO’s comedy line-up.

Get a taste of what’s to come in this first trailer.

HBO Orders A Black Lady Sketch Show from Robin Thede with Issa Rae Attached as EP

With anthology series being all the rage, late night hosts more often betting on games for their segments over anything else, and the shuddering/shrinking of many comedy content farms, sketch comedy is currently going through a bit of, shall we say, dry spell.

Perhaps, Robin Thede (you should know her from The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore and her own show on B.E.T. The Rundown) and Issa Rae will be turning the tides.

Of course, Saturday Night Live is still trudging along because, well, tradition? HBO also has Tracey Ullman’s Show and IFC has Baroness Von Sketch Show, but outside of the occasional indulgence of late night writers on Conan, Seth Meyers, and Corden and pre-taped segments on Full Frontal and Last Week Tonight, sketch comedy needs a bit of resuscitation.

Thede’s A Black Lady Sketch Show will star her, written by her, and feature mostly black female performers and writers with special guests. With an HBO touch, perhaps it’ll be a sketch comedy show that fill that void. There are no dates currently set, but we hope this will make its premiere sometime in 2019.

I Love You, America with Sarah Silverman and The Rundown with Robin Thede Premiere and Add Two More Women to Late Night Landscape

On this Thursday, October 12th, two more women, Sarah Silverman and Robin Thede will indeed premiere their own topical late night shows.

On Hulu, I Love You, America will have Sarah Silverman take her own heartfelt, yet unapologetically silly take on the world.

BET will enter the foray of late night with The Rundown with Robin Thede, a combo of the head writer of The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore and Chris Rock producing, with might be a traditional late night format, but focusing a little less on Trump.

Here’s Thede on MSNBC detailing what’s to come on The Rundown.

In any case, that means there are now four late night female hosts between Samantha Bee, Chelsea Handler, Sarah Silverman, and Robin Thede.

BET Will Be Entering into Late Night Tomorrow with “The Rundown with Robin Thede”

The Rundown with Robin Thede, the topical late night show produced by Chris Rock, will kick off Thursday night, October 12th at 10PM.

You might remember Thede from The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, which seems like such a distant memory these days, especially when it comes to the world of late night. As to what’s to come on The Rundown, the show itself is shrouded in a bit of mystery as there is only this promo for the time being.

It just so happens that Sarah Silverman’s topical show I Love You, America begins streaming on Hulu on Thursday as well.

Given the pace of the news right now, there seems to be room in late night for attempting to digest and make fun of whatever happened earlier in the day.

BET Is Getting Their Own Late Night Show Hosted by Robin Thede and Produced by Chris Rock

It’ll be called The Rundown with Robin Thede and air weekly with 24 episodes on BET. Thede was the head writer for The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore and a frequent panelist and Chris Rock is, well, Chris Rock.

There are a lot of developments that we’re curious to see play out here.

First, BET isn’t a place that anyone has associated with late night, but the tides of late night on cable over the last few years have encouraged networks to throw their hat in the ring.

Second, weekly late night shows are growing in number every other week, it would seem, and we hope this isn’t the case of a bubble growing only to burst.

Third, Comedy Central has a Franchesca Ramsey (another Nightly Show alum) show in the works that, if picked up, will undoubtedly have to deal with comparisons to Thede’s show. For that, the strategy of either show will be very interesting.

Fourth, this means late night will now have Trevor Noah, Desus & Mero, Tavis Smiley, and Robin Thede as hosts and thus making late night seem much less white than it was just a couple of years ago.

We be excitedly waiting through the summer to see indeed what happens.

Nightly Show Head Writer Robin Thede and Chris Rock Are Making a Weekly Comedy News Show Pilot “The Rundown with Robin Thede”

While this is being announced as “…a fast-paced half-hour look at the week’s headlines, celebrity newsmakers, social media buzz and pop culture trends,” don’t be surprised if Thede and Rock have something more clever up their sleeves.

Since the cancellation of The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, there seems to be a void where Wilmore’s voice once was in late night. The precision of Last Week Tonight and the unapologetic fire of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee have cemented their places in late night, but it would seem that The Nightly Show just didn’t get enough time to figure out where it fit in the post-Daily-Show-with-Jon-Stewart world.

Now, with this pilot being made and shopped around with Chris Rock on board, Thede might just pick up the baton that Wilmore had to set down.

The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore Names Robin Thede as Head Writer

Robin Thede, writer for Chris Rock at this year’s BET Awards and The Queen Latifah Show, has just landed the head writing gig at The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore.

Former Daily Show showrunner Rory Albanese and Larry Wilmore himself will be executive producing the show.

Now that all of this set, hopefully, we’ll get some sort of idea of the format of The Minority Report.
