The Second City Agrees to Black Alums Open Letter for More Change (Supported by Latinx and LGBTQ+ Second City Members Too)

June 11, 2020
News
latinx, open letter, second city

In response to Second City’s promise to change for the betterment of BIPOC and replacing of CEO/EP Andrew Alexander with Anthony LeBlanc, SNL’s Chris Redd sent out an open letter demanding Second City do more than they had outlined in their official statement. Much of that has to do with sexual harassment claims by black Second City members going nowhere, a creative environment with a pervasive racial bias against black artists, and more. Read the letter here.

Standing in solidarity with the black members and alums of Second City, many prominent Latinx and LGBTQ+ members of Second City stand in solidarity with that open letter.

Thusly, The Second City issued a second response, hearing the outcry for more change. They agreed to all the terms in their second official statement, going point-by-point and agreeing to truly creating an anti-racist environment, accreditation, investigating claims of abuse, harassment, and assault, and hiring a BIPOC owned Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion form. Read their letter in full here.

This is just the start of a wave of change in media and arts organizations across the board cleaning house and promising changes to have a truly inclusive and uplifting environment for BIPOC voices and dedicating themselves to anti-racism. It’s clear that they have to do better and, if they come up short again, they’re going to definitely hear about it.

Megan Amram Pens an Open Letter from Trump’s Doctor Harold Bornstein

Every once in awhile, Megan Amram posts a gem on her Tumblr. This latest work is a send-up of Trump’s doctor that you probably know from pictures of his goofy looking mug, Dr. Harold Bornstein, via a satirical open letter.

Amram writes as Bornstein:

Mr. Trump is not only the healthiest president that has ever served, but also the most handsome. I usually want to kiss President Trump when I see him, but I would never break the doctor-patient trust, so instead I kiss the portrait of him I drew on my little note pad. There have been no presidents that even come close to President Trump in terms of overall health and hotness. Franklin Pierce was pretty hot, but his body wasn’t great. James Garfield was more cute than hot. President Trump is the total package. I know this because of my stethoscope.

Leslie Knope Writes an Open Letter to America About This Election

“The point is: people making their own decisions is, on balance, better than an autocrat making decisions for them. It’s just that sometimes those decisions are bad, or self-defeating, or maddening, and a day where you get dressed up in your best victory pantsuit and spend an ungodly amount of money decorating your house with American flags and custom-made cardboard-cutouts of suffragettes in anticipation of a glass-ceiling-shattering historical milestone ends with you getting (metaphorically) eaten by a giant farting T. rex.”

Thanks to a member of Parks and Recreation, a sitcom that will, we believe, stand the test of time (especially since it sang the praises of being ‘stronger together’), the unfortunately fictional Leslie Knope wrote an endearing letter sharing her thoughts on the election as only she can (after plenty of comforting from her great friend Ann).

For our money, it was one of the things we needed to read right at this moment.

Eugene Mirman Takes Out Ad in Local Newspaper to Publish an Open Letter About Nonsensical Parking Ticket

Bureaucrats beware of Eugene Mirman, a comedian and a man who stands by his principles.

While enjoying an afternoon in Portsmouth, NH, Eugene Mirman found that he got a $15 parking ticket for parking in the wrong direction. Mind you, it wasn’t the wrong direction on the wrong side of the street, but a ticket for parking the wrong direction in a parking space as shown in this picture.

Rather than either paying it ASAP or willfully ignoring the ticket like most of us, Mirman decided to buy ad space in the local newspaper and publish this great open letter to the city of Portsmouth about his grievances over such the ridiculous parking citation he got.

We have yet to hear from the city of Portsmouth, but let’s hope they come up with something as sarcastic as POM Wonderful’s letter to John Oliver.

“Might as well hire me now before the Latin Grammy’s catch wind of my availability and scoop me up.”

–Tig Notaro

Tig has written an open letter to The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that she should be considered to host the 2016 Oscars awards ceremony. She gives plenty of great reasons like the one above as well as being able to promote the telecast through her podcast.

If this seriously happens, we’d bet it would be one of the most unforgettable Oscars ever and might bring back those 7 million folks who went missing from this year’s Oscars telecast ratings.

You can read Tig’s letter in full here and then please share it #HashTigOscars
