The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 175: Mike Bridenstine & All Star Picks New Faces to Watch

August 2, 2023
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
comics to watch, jfl, jfl montreal, just for laughs, new faces of comedy, variety

Despite their being several more months of the year left to go, right around now is the time of each year when a big share of the “comedians to watch” lists come out. Namely, the Just For Laughs Montreal New Faces of Comedy and Variety’s Top 10 Comics to Watch came out recently, highlighting what are supposed to be 2023’s class of comedians you should be paying attention to if you haven’t done so already.

That said, there is much more nuance that goes into picking the many dozens of comics between those two lists (FYI, Vulture’s Comedians You Should and Will Know List has yet to come out) and we enlisted comedy expert and historian and beloved comic Mike Bridenstine to make choice picks from those already highly selective picks. Essentially, Bridenstine and us do an all-star line-up of JFL and Variety’s all-star line-up in this very special episode of TCB Field Report.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 122: Hayley Beacon & Zillennials?

July 27, 2022
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
full frontal sam bee, hayley beacon, jfl, late night, new faces of comedy

Hailing from the Bay Area, Hayley Beacon is gracing LA with their undeniably charming irreverence. As they intersect between Gen Z and being a millennial, we venture into what the nuances of all cultures, mainstream and sub- and everything in between, come into play into their comedy and what they ultimately want to do (run Taco Bell’s Twitter account). Also, we get an inside perspective on what comedy in SF/Bay Area is like these days with it being more and more tech driven.

Also, “hot” takes on JFL New Faces, Full Frontal with Sam Bee being canceled, and more.

Follow Hayley @haybeacon across socials & @comedyoscar on Tues. in Oakland.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 70: Carly Hoogendyk & The New NYC

July 28, 2021
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
derek delgaudio, jfl, neal brennan, new faces of comedy, nyc comedy

One of our favorite comedy hyphenates Carly Hoogendyk (comedy producer-talent manager-photographer) joins us for this week’s TCB Field Report to give us the NYC perspective on comedy reopening (we literally ask her to give us the lay of the land when looking out her apartment window) and what’s going on behind the scenes out in the streets of NYC comedy (across several boroughs). FYI, there’s some nice comedy show lineage history here between the ungodly amount of comedy that has been seen between both Carly and TCB’s Jake Kroeger. Also, we go in on with “hot” takes on this year’s JFL New Faces of Comedy and Neal Brennan using the world’s new preeminent magician, Derek Delgaudio, to direct his new special.

Follow Carly @carlyhoogs and keep tab on her shows including @the100percentshow & @gooddeliverycomedy

Amazon to Do a 6 Part Documentary Series on Getting JFL Montreal’s New Faces

For decades, one of the most sought out milestones in comedy when coming up has been and still is getting selected to be part of Just For Laughs Montreal’s New Faces of Comedy.

So, Amazon has decided to do a docu-series on the process and following comedians in trying to secure a slot on the renowned festival’s New Faces line-up, which will show how much stress and work goes in to essentially doing what’s supposed to be a life-changing set in front of members of the industry.

As there are cameras rolling, maybe all those picked as New Faces will actually get something out of the whole thing besides just doing a few shows in Montreal and taking a few general meetings.

We’re guessing this will drop on Amazon a bit after JFL Montreal happens this Summer.
