News
atsuko okatsuka, donald glover, jacqueline novak, joe pera, maya erskine, mike falzone, mr and mrs smith, surrounded

1. Jacqueline Novak finally puts the frosting on the cake for her long running, critically acclaimed solo show, Get On Your Knees, the most hysterically poetic meditation on blowjobs, with it coming to Netflix as a special on Jan. 23rd.

2. The trailer for Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine is here. If you’re Gen-Z, this isn’t your sibling’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith (with Brad and Angelina) and if you’re a Millennial, this isn’t your great grandparents’ Mr. & Mrs. Smith (from Hitchcock). Get ready for a dark, moody, and quietly sassy Mr. & Mrs. Smith on Amazon Prime on Feb. 2nd.

3. Joe Pera and Atsuko Okatsuka are both wonderful and both deserving of your time and money and have just added dates to their upcoming tours. Get tix now at joepera.com or at atsukocomedy.com/#tour.

4. In case you didn’t know, Mike Falzone went VR with his hit in-the-round crowd work show, Surrounded and it went well enough that they got a second season coming at the end of the month. That gives you enough time to put a VR headset on your Christmas list.

5. We’ll leave you with this: We might still have free tix for Brett Goldstein on Sun. 12/10 in Pasadena. E-mail us at thecomedybureau@gmail.com to find out.

Pick of the Day: Surrounded: Crowdwork in the Round (in NYC) 3/9

February 27, 2023
News
crowd work, mike falzone, new york comedy, stand up comedy, the stand

For quite some time now, comedian multi-hyphenate Mike Falzone has encircled performers with audience members and prohibited them from doing any prepared material and resorting only to crowd work on his creation, Surrounded. It has been a delightful monthly installment at The Hollywood Improv, but is going to be touching down in NYC next week.

That’s right, there will be a special rearranging of the Main Room at The Stand in NYC, probably unlike the club has ever had and the crowd will be as close and on top of the comedians as possibly can be. It’s a special, unique crowd work show (especially because Mike brings such a positive energy to his crowd work show) that feels more like a communal experience rather than being singled out for something you’re wearing by a comic who forgot their next joke.

Surrounded is set for The Stand on Thurs. Mar. 9th at 8PM and 10PM and you can (and should) get tickets here & here respectively for $19.72 ($15 plus fees) a pop.

Pick of the Day: Ghost Detective Live! (near LA) 10/17

We are officially in October and there are plenty of things lined up all over the place to keep the next four weeks as spooky as can be, all leading up to Halloween itself. With that said, you don’t necessarily need to bury yourself in horror movies or source the scariest haunted houses to get those creepy thrills. Finding out why someone got ghosted by a comedian at a live show ought to be another great way to get some goosebumps (as well as some hearty guffaws too).

Kari Assad and James Hilmer will be serving up that very experience with a live recording of their podcast Ghost Detective that will double as a stand-up show and comic investigation of why someone in the audience might have been ghosted by someone when things “seemed” to be have going fine. Assad has lined up a wonderful handful of great LA comics perfect for this job with Bri Pruett, Mike Falzone, Rachel Scanlon, and Monique Moreau.

All the chills and thrills and laughs for this live edition of Ghost Detective is set for Mon. Oct. 17th at 8PM at The Glendale Room. Tickets are just $10 and you better snatch them up here.

Pick of the Day: Dishoom Dishoom: A Bollywood Action Comedy Show (in LA) 6/9

While How Did This Get Made? and MST3K have a lot of loud American cinema covered with their comedic riffing, there’s not as much love given in the same regard to international cinema, despite there being plenty of source material. Nearly every Jackie Chan movie in the 90s (especially the ones from China) would be well worth a riff fest.

So, cue in the new live riff fest, Dishoom Dishoom, that will be digging into India’s biggest movie for 2022 RRR, directed S. S. Rajamouli, which might have more ridiculous action sequences than several Nicholas Cage movies. They’ll assemble some of LA’s funniest to watch and see what they can make of a guy kicking a motorcycle to stop it and then catch it while in mid-air amongst other ludicrous slow motion action packed sequences. This month, Meghana Indurti and Mike Falzone will be joining Milan Patel and Neeraj Srinivasan in the internationally flavored ludicrous watch-along.

See just how wild RRR gets with the trailer here.

All of this will be happening at Echo Park’s newest VHS store, Whammy Analog Media on Thurs. Jun. 9th at 8PM PT. Tickets are $10 and you really ought to go snag them here right now (as space is limited).

Pick of the Day: Photographers of Comedy (in LA) 8/8

While many comedy shows offer more than just the comedy, it’s not often that you’d be able to get headshots/some very nice photos of yourself in addition to a live comedy show. In fact, we’d say that it almost never has happened in our decade plus tenure at The Comedy Bureau.

Lucky for you, such a two-for-one event is happening this Sunday, Aug. 8th at 8PM PT at the Raven Comedy House in Sylmar where you could just enjoy an intimate, house comedy show, but you could also get a brand new set of professionally slick photos for anything from making sure you head a decent promo photo to auditions to making it seem to your parents that you have a lot of things going for you out there.

Called Photographers of Comedy, the evening will feature the comedy and/or photos of:

Arthur Hamilton
Mike Falzone
Miranda Meadows
Mitchell Lamar
Nick Torchon
Sharra Lou
James Rios
Host: Rey Cabato

Tickets for the show are $10 and you can get, for presale, a $60 headshot package. Find out more details and buy your tickets here.

Usually, stand-up comedy done in the round is done so in gigantic spaces, a stadium, auditorium, etc. and requires a larger than life personality.

This very special evening, simply called Surrounded, at the Hollywood Improv Comedy Lab will transform an already intimate venue into an even more intimate one by putting the stage smack dab in the center of the room and having the audience sit all the way around. Also, you’ll get to see the rising stars with a line-up of Mike Falzone, Lara Beitz, Jordan Perry, and Rick Glassman as well as some newly minted JFL New Faces (Hannah Einbinder and Shapel Lacey).

Tickets for Surrounded are $12 (plus 2 item min.) and you can (and should) get them here.
