Pick of the Day: Marx Brothers Double Feature (in LA) Christmas Day

If you’re in LA for Christmas and you’re finding that you want to get away from any sort of Christmas get-together and do something else entirely, you might notice that almost every comedy club, theater, spot in town is closed for the day.

You might feel a bit abandoned in your search for something outside the bounds of holiday cheer in the City of Angels, but fret not. Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly has a Marx Brothers double feature running on Christmas afternoon. Animal Crackers and Horse Feathers, two choice selections from the Marx Brothers filmography, will screen back-to-back at the New Bev starting at 2PM. It doesn’t get more escapist for Christmas 2022 in LA than watching Animal Crackers and Horse Feathers, two revered slapstick comedies from all the way back in the 1930s.

Best of all, you can get tickets for both for $12.

What Was Supposed to Be  a Salvador Dali/Marx Brothers Movie Lives on a Graphic Novel “Giraffes on Horseback Salad”

Through the endless persistence of a Austin-based drive-in theater owner, one Josh Frank, a real screenplay that was supposed to be a collaboration between famed surrealist artist Salvador Dali and The Marx Brothers, gets to actually live on in a graphic novel adaptation from Frank, Heidecker (along with handpicked funny people by Heidecker), and artist Manuela Pertega. Appropriately (we suppose), it’s called Giraffes on Horseback Salad.

We got to see a bit of it live read last night at Dynasty Typewriter and it was delightfully kind of what we thought it would be: a rollicking surrealist journey filled with Marx Brothers gags and punchlines (The Sklar Brothers live reading as the Marx Brothers was truly a treat).

At this point, you’re just going to have to dive in for yourself into Giraffes on Horseback Salad to see what a Dali x Marx Bros. collaboration would be. Go get the book and do so here.

Did you know that famed surrealist Salvador Dali and legendary comedy team The Marx Brothers wrote a screenplay together? That really did happen and it was called Giraffes and Horseback Salad, but didn’t get made.

Well, that is, until now (sort of).

Tim Heidecker and pop-historian Josh Frank have adapted the screenplay into a graphic novel “A Night at the Surrealists” Starring Salvador Dali and The Marx Brothers : The Lost Movie.

Fore the release of the book, they’ll be doing a special night to mark the occasion at Dynasty Typewriter next week that will feature a staged live reading (feat. some very special guests The Sklar Brothers and Dave Foley), sing-alongs, and visuals to really bring you into the Salvador Dali x Marx Brothers universe.

Who knows, maybe this will lead to an actual movie (or more likely a series on streaming service) being made?

Tickets are $15 now and $20 on the day of. Go get ‘em right here right now.
