Pick of the Day: I Married a Monster from Outer Space LIVE! (in LA) 2/14

Comedy and Valentine’s Day is a strange mix, but they can work as bedfellows with some careful consideration.

Case in point, a very special live reading of another midnight movie classic led off by Dana Gould, I Married a Monster from Outer Space. This Wednesday, Feb. 14th, Gould will be joined on the hallowed Largo at the Coronet stage by Bobcat Goldthwait, Laraine Newman, Jonah Ray, Janet Varney, and more to celebrate(?) love(?) in the campiest way possible.

No need to worry about any feisty comedians probing into your relationship and, instead, you can just enjoy a sci-fi-horror-(unintentional)-rom-com (that’s a pretty good Valentine’s as far as we’re concerned) as presented by one of the most dedicated preservationists of best/worst movies with Gould.

Go get your tickets now at $46 a pop here.

eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, film independent, live read

Not only is this an exclusive live read of the trippy existential rom com Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, it will be such a live read with a stellar cast of Tessa Thompson, Adam Scott, Kiersey Clemons, Kelly Marie Tran, and Bridget Regan under the direction of Brett Haley (Hearts Beat Loud, The Hero, All the Bright Places).

It’s a modern classic and this one night only event will be held at the Directors Guild of America next week on Wed. Mar. 4th thanks to Film Independent (the folks behind the Spirit Awards). Tickets are $50 for GA (and will very likely sell out very quickly). Go get tickets ASAP here.

The well of comedy gold that flows from the imagination of Tom Scharpling (The Best Show on WFMU) never ends and never ceases to amaze. Just for the hell of it, he made an irreverent script for what he thought could be the third installment in the Grown-Ups franchise, the Adam Sandler and friends broad comedies that is pretty much just premised on reuniting old friends for some hijinks.

This Grown-Ups 3 will be live read later this month (Tues. Jan. 28th 8:30PM) at the Bootleg by what we’re sure will be a stellar cast in order to raise money in support of Australian Wildfire relief.

Tickets are starting at $15. Go get them for this special, one-off that supports a very, very good cause here.

Yep, Nick Kroll and John Mulaney will be doing a live read of the classic film My Dinner with Andre at Beverly Hills’ Annenberg Center in two weeks.

You probably already knew about this as tickets for Film Independent members and non-members have already sold out (if you didn’t, you’re welcome for now even get to imagining this happening).

That being said, tickets may be released on the night of and, as usually happens, a few people might not show (there are over 900 seats in the main theater) and we feel like we wouldn’t be doing our due diligence if we didn’t tell you about this.

(via NY Times)

In your daily news on whether we’ll get to The Interview in the near future or not, the Treehouse Theater in NYC has opted to put on a live reading of a shooting script. The roles will be read by various performers, some of which will be comedians, though Seth Rogen and James Franco are currently not set to read their own roles.

The live reading, which is a good follow up to Cinefamily’s secret protest screening of The Red Chapel this past weekend, will take place this Sat. at 7PM at the Treehouse Theater.

Gauging from how well live reads have gone here in LA, this should be great as well as supporting freedom of speech and expression.
