Showtime Orders Up Astronaut Workplace Comedy “Moonbase 8” With Armisen, Heidecker, and Reilly

Joining in with Space Force and Avenue 5, there is going to be another space-centric workplace-ish comedy, time time coming from Showtime. Entitled Moonbase 8, it comes from the minds of series stars Fred Armisen, Tim Heidecker, and John C. Reilly and Jonathan Krisel who was instrumental to Baskets and Portlandia behind the camera.

Is it a trend of not-so-distant-future live action workplace comedy that is coming? It might be too early to tell, but three of them (and countless others that are undoubtedly in development) certainly signals networks sharing in a vision with their programming/development slates.

The quartet of Armisen, Heidecker, C. Reilly, and Krisel does excite us to think of a subtle, yet out-there comedy that tangles with the strangeness, in their own niche of strangeness, of attempting to go to the final frontier. Moonbase 8 is set to premiere in the fall and, with A24 attached, we can’t wait to see what super-stylish look they come up with for this.

Kumail Nanjiani To Star In Feature Adaptation of Simon Rich’s ‘Any Person, Living Or Dead’

Kumail Nanjiani To Star In Feature Adaptation of Simon Rich’s ‘Any Person, Living Or Dead’

Already, we love the combo of Kumail Nanjiani getting top billing, the writing of Simon Rich (Miracle Workers, Man Seeking Woman), and the directing of Jonathan Krisel (Baskets, Portlandia) here. Couple that with a story that seems to have ingredients of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Looper, and Back to the Future and we are incredibly intrigued.

Basically, we can’t wait to see Kumail potentially hunt down Shakespeare, which very likely might happen based on the premise of Any Person, Living or Dead.

Baskets Renewed for 4th Season at FX

“We’re not clowning around, Baskets just got approved for a 4th season. Time to celebrate! #BasketsFX“

-@basketsfx

While sitcoms are being axed left, right, and all around at the big broadcast networks, FX recognizes that their comedy programming (which also includes Atlanta and Better Things) is pretty damn strong and are staying the course.

Oh, this would be a great time to remind you to get into Baskets if you, perchance, haven’t dipped your toe in yet.

Over two seasons, the conceit of Jay Baruchel and his wild, alternate realities born from the perils of relationships in Man Seeking Woman have gelled into something charming, clever, and intriguing.

Season 3 looks like it’ll keep the show headed in that direction.

Look for the season premiere on FXx on Wednesday, January 4th.

HBO Developing Comedy Centered Secret Humor Magazine at a Baptist University from Robert Askins, “Brotherhood”

Sounds like it fit right in next to Veep and Silicon Valley.

All of the high concept comedy over at HBO largely shows the shaky inner-workings of giant, taken-for-granted institutions like the office of Vice President or the tech sector.

Their latest addition to their development slate, Brotherhood, seems to follow suit by following a secret, rebellious organization at a Baptist university bent on partying and circulating their humor magazine. The project comes from acclaimed playwright  of Hand to God, Robert Askins and will be directed by Jonathan Krisel whose work you’ve seen on Portlandia and Man Seeking Woman.

Hopefully, we’ll see if it makes it to pilot or series soon.

These Five “Baskets” Promos Could Add Up to a Teaser

At around 16 seconds each, these 5 promos for FX’s latest comedy, Baskets, following a man determined to be a clown from Zach Galifianakis, Louis C.K., and Jonathan Krisel add up to well over a minute, which is about the length of a teaser for a TV show or movie.

So, if you watch this…

…this…

…this…

…this…

…and this in a row, you got as much bang for your buck as you would had they all been intercut together.

Also, you should watch them regardless of them being short promos because they’re pretty damn funny.

Look for Baskets to premiere in January on FX.

Jonathan Krisel and Graham Wagner Adapting “Mermaids In Paradise” Into a Feature

You’re most likely familiar with Krisel and Graham’s work as director and writer on Portlandia.

Lydia Millet’s novel Mermaids in Paradise is being adapted into a feature with an adaptation written by Graham Wagner to be directed by Jonathan Krisel. No talent is currently attached, but the story of a couple discovering and having to save mermaids on their honeymoon should be in more than capable hands with Wagner and Krisel on board.

With Splash and Little Mermaid as the biggest mermaid movies in the cinematic canon, Mermaids In Paradise will be a welcome addition.

Indeed, IFC has ordered a sixth and seventh season of one of their most successful series, Portlandia. Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein and director Jonathan Krisel amidst all their other projects will be staying staying together for awhile and we can only hope that means more Brunch Special type things coming down the pipeline soon.

FX Orders “Baskets” from Zach Galifianakis, Louis C.K., and Jonathan Krisel to Series

With another Emmy win for Louie, FX is smartly furthering their business with Louis C.K. as they have just picked up Baskets, executively produced by C.K., Zach Galifianakis, and Portlandia director Jonathan Krisel, to series.

Galifianakis will star as a man who leaves the corporate world to pursue a life of becoming a professional clown. So, maybe it’s hovering somewhere around Being John Malkovich minus all the body snatching with a focus on clowning instead of puppetry?

Either way, we have a really great feeling about this.

Portlandia’s Jonathan Krisel To Direct Louis C.K./Zach Galifianakis FX Pilot

All three of those names together, Louis C.K., Zach Galifianakis, and Jonathan Krisel, should make for one hell of a great pilot.

Let’s hope this gets picked up soon just so we can see what they came up with.
