As always with the HFPA and The Golden Globes, there are some out-of-left-field surprises with their nominations like War Dogs or Graves, which didn’t gain nearly as much praise as perennial prestige comedies like Transparent or Veep.

Still, Deadpool is showing strong with a Critics Choice win last night and nominations here today. That’s especially impressive considering it’s a movie that’s an R-Rated action comedy, one of the most underrepresented types of movies when it comes to awards season. Also, Atlanta continues to an impressive freshman run and bodes well for FX.

Though a potential dark horse late comer, keep an eye out for Mike Mills’ 20th Century Women, which  one of favorite movies of the year.

With the Hangover franchise presumably in the rear view mirror, writer/director Todd Phillips has lately been working on a much more intriguing project, War Dogs.

Based on the true story (written in an Rolling Stone by Guy Lawson) article of the young, enterprising American gun runners David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli, it looks like Jonah Hill gets to live up his character in the Wolf of Wall Street (replace stocks with guns) and team up with Miles Teller in what seems like one of the many batshit crazy stories to come out of Afghanistan.

Watch the trailer here, then look for War Dogs in theaters August 19th.

Cary Fukunaga Developing Mental Institution Dark Comedy Starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill

So, a dark comedy is tad lighter in tone for Fukunaga, right?

Though it has yet to find a home, the man behind Beasts of No Nation and season 1 of True Detective, Cary Fukunaga is making his way into the world of comedy with a potential new series, Maniac.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise with Fukunaga at the helm that the project revolves around the fantasies of a man committed to a mental institution.

Emma Stone and Jonah Hill are almost set to star, which makes us think it won’t be long before Maniac is on its way to a series order.

There’s only a few more weeks left before the release of The Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar! Specifically, the release is set for theaters on Feb. 5th.

The Coens return to comedy looks more and more enticing as evidenced by this brand new TV spot.

Have you been missing The Coen Brothers’ more humorous side as of late?

If so, you’ll been happy to know that their wonderfully dry comedy streak seems to run all through the trailer of their latest offering, “Hail, Caesar!”.

Boasting a stellar cast of Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Channing Tatum, and Jonah Hill as well as lavishly done up set pieces of Hollywood’s classic Golden Age, Hail, Caesar! looks to be everything we were hoping it would be.

Crime Comedy Continues to Trend with “Frauds” from Caspe/Ozeri/Tarses and “Arms and Dudes” Starring Jonah Hill

A wave in comedy that has been slowly building towards breaking across both TV and film has been crime themed comedy.

Already in the works, Johnny Depp has the high profile thievery comedy in Mortdecai and Zach Galifianakis is starring in Masterminds, previously titled Loomis Fargo, featuring a robbery by a more rag tag bunch. It might be a stretch, but you can this year’s unexpectedly funny revenge flick John Wick in there too.

Announced this week, Happy Endings’ David Caspe, Gil Ozeri along with producer Jamie Tarses are putting together a family crime comedy at Fox called “Frauds”. It will follow low level criminals trying to work up their way to ponzi schemes (via THR).

Todd Phillips has just cast Jonah Hill and gotten crime comedy feature “Arms and the Dudes” moving forward at Warner Bros. Hill will be part of a duo that were stoners that end up dealing arms for the U.S. government (via THR).  Even though The Interview hasn’t made it to theaters and Arms and Dudes has to roll into production, we think the two would definitely make a good pairing.

Perahps, out of this trend, we’ll finally get the this decade’s Snatch.

The Coen Brothers’ latest edition to their period piece Hollywood comedy Hail, Caesar! might just be Jonah Hill and Scarlett Johansson. Both are currently in talks right now to join the cast and it comes as little surprise that the Coens could have a cast including Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, and Channing Tatum.

Potentially, Schmidt and Jenko could be in a Coen Brothers movie.

Whether the latest version of ‘21 Jump Street’ flew under your radar or not, maybe you should keep track of the sequel. We really enjoyed the Jonah Hill/Channing Tatum buddy cop dynamic in the first one and we’ll be looking for a teaser or trailer in the coming months.
