Pick of the Day: Don’t Tell Tapings (in LA) 8/23 & 8/24

August 21, 2024
News
don't tell, live comedy, live tapings, los angeles, west la

Despite the nature of the name of Don’t Tell Comedy, it’s no secret that they have shaken things up in being a force to be reckoned with in the live comedy game. In fact, that’s so much the case, that not only is Don’t Tell a credit that many comedians boast as a credit, but is a goal for many a comedian coming up to attain as does put you on a comedy map right now.

With that in mind, you might want to catch the very next batch of Don’t Tell anointed comedians (and no, we don’t know who it is), doing exclusive sets to be taped in LA for Don’t Tell‘s very popular YouTube Channel.

These latest tapings, are set for this Friday, 8/23, in West LA and Saturday, 8/24, in Manhattan Beach area with both nights having 7PM & 9:15PM shows (shout out to westsiders who often feel left out of what’s going on in Silverlake and Highland Park).

Tickets are $30 and you can (and should) go snag ’em here.

TCB Debriefing 4/4-4/7/24: Kyle Kinane, Jackie Kashian, Murray Hill, Legally Blonde, Babes

April 7, 2024
News
babes, don't tell, ilana glazer, jackie kashian, kyle kinane, legally blonde, michelle buteau, murray hill, stand up comedy

1. Oh, thank goodness there’s a new hour of Kyle Kinane to offer the pitch perfect solace to the high octane insanity that has been 2024. His latest hour special, Dirt Nap, is Kyle doing what Kyle does best with lengthy punchline filled stories and intricately colored observations all in service of a big comedic payoff (that, in a way, feels like a bonus since the journey in of itself is so goddamn fun). Kyle does over 8 minutes on describing Fast X here and, for our money, is more fun than the movie itself. That’s just one fraction of how much of a joy Dirt Nap is, even with being perfectly aware uncertain times we live in. Please watch and enjoy Dirt Nap on repeat here.

2. It’s kind of absurd that Jackie Kashian doesn’t have a sitcom focused around her and her dyed-in-the-woo-salesman of a dad. Kashian is and has been one of the funniest comedians working today and her bits about her dad are pretty much priceless. See for yourself here in Jackie’s Don’t Tell set.

3. Mindy Kaling’s next sitcom, Murray Hill, seems like Kaling is aiming to make her version of Friends with a logline of “…five work-obsessed twenty-somethings who strive for professional success and, if they have time, personal happiness in Manhattan’s most glamorous neighborhood, Murray Hill” (Deadline).

4. Amazon Prime has a Legally Blonde spin-off in the works (Deadline). The legacy of Elle Woods endures, but we hope that there isn’t any Kim Kardashian lawyer storyline in this project.

5. Though it would seem that Michelle Buteau/Ilana Glazer vehicle helmed by Pamela Adlon Babes isn’t about abortion, it feels like the same sort of buzz that Obvious Child got is coming up for the buddy/birth comedy. See for yourself with the first official trailer here, then look for it in theaters right after Mother’s Day on May 17th.

6. We’ll leave you with this: Please help out wonderful person/hilarious comedian Jen Saunderson with her mom’s battle against stage IV cancer at the GoFundMe here.

TCB Debriefing 10/26/23: Lisa Frankenstein, Hasan Minhaj, Shane Torres, Manos Day, Grace Kuhlenschmidt

daily show, don't tell, Grace Kuhlenschmidt, hasan minhaj, lisa frankenstein, manos day, manos the hands of fate, new yorker, shane torres

1. A week before Halloween is just about the perfect time for a trailer for a new Diablo Cody movie, Lisa Frankenstein. Predictions: This will be a break out role for Kathryn Newton (please don’t come at us with Detective Pokemon and Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) and will be an inevitable fascinating contrast to the other Frankenstein-riff movie coming out soon, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. Have your curiosity more than peaked with Lisa Frankenstein’s first trailer here, then plan your Valentine’s Day around its release.

2. Hasan Minhaj goes Patriot Act-ish in response to the now infamous New Yorker interview where his act was reported to be embellished rather than 100% true. One has to wonder if, from now on, if there will be a literal switching of hats by comedians who do take on other roles in addition to their figurative one.

3. Shane Torres had the final word on being a Guy Fieri apologist and he very well might have the final word on the proliferation of eating ass. Please enjoy it during his Don’t Tell set.

4. There are so many unnecessary holidays (we tag our daily posts on IG with them), so why not have a day dedicated to celebrating what is long regarded as one of the worst movies (making one of MST3K’s most celebrated and enduring episodes) of all time Manos: The Hands of Fate? Thanks to Dumb Industries, that will be canonized on the 57th anniversary of the legendarily bad piece of cinema on Nov. 15th (which they will be doing something very special for). Sign-up at Dumb Industries to get more details.

5. Welcome, Grace Kuhlenschmidt to The Daily Show (ahem, Comedy Central still hasn’t picked a new host though).

6. We’ll leave you with this: Even if you think of comedians as philosopher kings, the last line of free speech and expression, remember that they are, first and foremost comedians before those all those other titles (i.e. they’re always/should be going for the joke first).

TCB Debriefing 10/23/23: Netflix Verified Stand-Up, Sophie Buddle, Ms. Pat, Whitney Cumming OFTV, If You Were the Last, Desus Nice

October 23, 2023
News
daily show, desus nice, don't tell, if you were the last, ms. pat, netflix is a joke, sophie buddle, stand up comedy, verified stand up

1. First, The Standups, then came The Comedy Lineup. Now, Netflix is having a (slightly) more creative name for their handpicked stand-up showcase series with Verified Stand-Up. Asif Ali, Dulcé Sloan, Gianmarco Soresi, Isiah Kelly, Leslie Liao, Nimesh Patel, Robby Hoffman, Rosebud Baker, Sabrina Wu, and Vanessa Gonzalez have short sets that will premiere on the streaming giant come Tues. Nov. 28th.

2. Please enjoy the oh so clever (and honestly, kind of naughty, but mostly very clever) Don’t Tell set from one of Canada’s finest comedy exports, Sophie Buddle.

3. Watch the amazing true story of Ms. Pat going from being a plaintiff on Judge Joe Brown to be a beloved touring headlining comedian that is going to have her own small claims court show on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

4. Whitney Cummings is doubling down on OFTV (the non-NSFW arm of OnlyFans) by having her sixth special, Mouthy, premiere and exclusive stream on OFTV come Nov. 15th. Already, she made a big splash with her first OFTV exclusive, The Roast of Bert Kreischer, presented by Cummings. So far, if you want to watch, OFTV doesn’t need a subscription fee or your e-mail (and we’re pretty sure not part of the AMPTP?)

5. Peacock is coming out what might be the cutest space based rom com with the Zoe Chao and Anthony Mackie two-hander, If You Were the Last. Take a gander here and, if you’re digging it, you can stream it now on Peacock.

6. FYI, it’s Desus Nice week at The Daily Show with still no permanent host.

7. We’ll leave you with this: generic rock really feels like the wrong pick for trailers for stand-up specials, despite it being the go-to trailer music for almost every comedy special promo.
