TCB Debriefing 10/12/23: The Curse, The Daily Show, How Did This Get Made?, Aparna Nancherla, Please Don’t Destroy, Cora Bora, Daniel Sloss

October 12, 2023
News
aparna nancherla, benny safdie, cora bora, daniel sloss, emma stone, how did this get made, late night, nathan fielder, paul scheer, please don't destroy, seth meyers, the curse, the daily show

1. If you dare (and of course you do since it’s the reason for the Halloween season), take your first full look at the meta meta meta house-flipping/docu-series/supernatural(?) thriller, The Curse with Nathan Fielder, Emma Stone, and Benny Safdie. Then, set a reminder for Nov. 10th, it’s premiere date on Showtime/Paramount+.

2. The Daily Show will be the second to last late night program to return to the air (the last one will be SNL) and has, surprise surprise, not picked a permanent replacement for Trevor Noah. Instead, they’re going with another round of revolving hosts including Michael Kosta, Desus Nice, Sarah Silverman, Charlmagne Tha God, Leslie Jones, Michelle Wolf, and The Daily Show correspondents. This all begins next week and, one hopes, they’ll get someone permanently behind the desk before the hell that will be the 2024 election gets into full swing.

3. One of the definitive movie and comedy podcasts in existence is hitting the road so you won’t have to find yourself at Largo in order to see Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas work their magic in person. Get tix here.

4. Just a friendly neighborhood reminder of Aparna Nancherla‘s reserved comedic brilliance a la giving her depression the name “Brenda” in an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

5. The Please Don’t Destroy boys made a whole damn movie, The Treasure of Foggy Mountain, the trailer of which plays exactly like one of their sketches. Also, Conan O’Brien as Ben Marshall‘s Dad is perfect casting. See the madness in its entirety Nov. 17th on Peacock.

6.  You won’t have to wait for the next season of Hacks, whenever that’s going to happen, or rebinge The Good Place to see Meg Stalter and Manny Jacinto on screen again. Their indie comedy festival darling, Cora Bora just sold its North American distribution rights to Brainstorm Media (Variety). Hope this makes for a bright light in theatrical releases in early 2024.

7. Internationally renowned for breaking up relationships for people’s well being via his comedy, Daniel Sloss is making his latest stop in LA next week. By the way, we got tickets if you want them. Just be the first to let us know @thecomedybureau on IG.

8. We’ll leave you with this: Apologies for missing out on yesterday’s debriefing (and Monday’s even though that was technically a national holiday). Our esteemed founder Jake Kroeger is also the booker at the beloved Lyric Hyperion now and he’s getting the hang of juggling 100 balls at once (in addition to running TCB and booking a theater) .

TCB Debriefing 7/31/23: RIP Paul Reubens, Friars Club, Daniel Sloss, Two Dykes and a Mic, Barbenheimer

News

1. RIP Paul Reubens, (1952-2023). Undoubtedly, there will be screenings of Pee Wee movies at a theater near you in his honor. Take the opportunity to pay your respects and honor his memory by treasuring his work with a crowd of strangers in a movie theater.

2. For the first time ever, the venerable comedy institution known as The Friars Club (a group that help perfect the art of roasting far before Comedy Central, Roast Battle, etc.) will be airing their exclusive, legendary roasts for a month on Friars Club Radio (SiriusXM channel 109 and on the SiriusXM App). Specifically, these roasts that were only privy to their membership can be heard from Aug. 6th-Sept. 2nd (and probably will be behind a pay wall afterwards). Don’t miss out on roasts like Sarah Silverman going in on Jerry Lewis if you have SiriusXM.

3. One of the most biggest touring international comedians, Daniel Sloss, has just announced a U.S. tour coming this Fall running from Oct. 6th-Nov. 3rd. It’s about time Americans got a reminder from a Scotsman on how to do dark comedy.

4. Barbie/Barbenheimer continues to set box office records (THR). Perhaps, when Margot Robbie says a movie is going to be a billion dollar movie (even if she doesn’t know if it’s true), maybe there’s something to it.

5. Does Elon Musk resigning to remove a giant X sign on a building mean the death of the letter “X” being cool?

Though it has been a bit of time since Jigsaw, the mark of Daniel Sloss‘ special is still indelible. When it comes to stand-up comedy dealing with relationships, perhaps the most well-trodden territory in comedy, Sloss special was not only enjoyed by millions, but inspired many of those folks to take more stock in themselves, their lives, and what they want out of a relationship.

Naturally, we can’t wait to see what Sloss has to serve up next, especially with everything the world has been through and continues to go through at every waking moment of this time. Luckily, he is set on his Hubris tour that is currently working its way through the world and has dates scheduled through spring 2022.

For New Yorkers and Angelenos, Sloss will be coming in with this highly anticipated tour on Fri. Oct. 15th at NYC’s Beacon Theatre and on Wed. Nov. 10th at LA’s Orpheum Theatre. Tickets start at $49 and proof of vaccination will be required. Best go get your tickets now here.

Watch Daniel Sloss and Beth Stelling Dissect Their Conan Sets on “The Set Up”

Stand-up comedy, as you might now from following/reading us, is quite the particular art form. Within that form, a comedian’s set on a late night talk show is an even more particular part of the art form that is so painstakingly crafted as it’s often a comedian’s intro to the world and it has to accomplish showing who one is as a comedian in a very small amount of time.

Yet, many a great comedian pulls such a feat off.

To further show how detailed the process is with a late night set, Conan has started a series The Set Up where longtime, beloved booker JP Buck chats with some of his favorite comedians and his favorite performances of his on Conan. There are already two episodes featuring the brilliance of Daniel Sloss and Beth Stelling that you ought to give a watch to here and here respectively.

To call a comedy special “X” should denote that one will be going into some sort of dark territory, a place that Daniel Sloss is more than familiar with.

We actually got to catch X while Sloss was running it at Largo and it might be his best hour yet. Sloss dives head on into toxic masculinity and picks it apart in his signature bouncy, yet subversive style.

Get a taste of what’s to come with Daniel Sloss: X with this trailer, then look for its premiere on HBO on Nov. 2nd.

Daniel Sloss has two whole stand-up specials coming to Netflix and also likes to identify his sense of humor as very dark. Maybe that is part of the reason that those specials be dropping on Netflix on 9/11 this year? Then again, maybe Netflix wanted to release it on a Tuesday and that just so happened to line-up perfectly with their release schedule?

In any case, Daniel is one of Scotland’s funniest imports in recent memory (part of the reason why he has done stand-up on Conan more than most comedians this decade). Get a taste of what you’re in for with this clip/trailer here.
