TCB Debriefing 7/19/23: Adult Swim Festival, Killing It S2, Barbie Pre-Sales, Only Murders in the Building

July 19, 2023
News
adult swim, adult swim festival, barbie, hulu, killing it, only murders in the building, peacock

1. Due to the double strike, the upcoming Adult Swim Festival in San Diego had to amend their schedule (i.e. much of their series experiences/meet & greets had to be canceled) Check the full schedule here.

2. Craig Robinson and Claudia O’Doherty return as one of TV’s most unlikely, but still charming duos with the second season of Killing It, due out Aug. 17th on Peacock. Get your first look here.

3. Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie is the best pre-selling movie this year since Avatar: The Way of Water (Deadline). One can only hope that Gerwig’s take on Barbie is The LEGO Movie of 2023.

4. The cameos of Only Murders in the Building only get better and better. Take a gander at Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd character posters, then set a reminder for Aug. 8th, the season premiere date on Hulu.

5. At this moment in time, is public speaking (and, by proxy, stand-up comedy) still anyone’s greatest fear?

The Next Adult Swim Festival Is Headed to San Diego and Will Be Free of Charge

News

When it comes to upping the ante on TV, Adult Swim is often first to do so with some of the most edgy programming available on TV. The same goes with doing live festivals as the network has done a few editions of mixing the bleeding edge comedy and music festival where other networks seem to be mostly OK with just doing a companion podcast for their hit shows.

The Adult Swim Festival is actually upping the ante on itself as it will take place, for the first time, in San Diego, right outside of the San Diego Convention Center, home to the world famous Comic Con, and be completely free so long as you’re 18+ (we’re assuming no kids are allowed rather than having to buy a ticket for them?). Thurs. Jul. 20th-Sat. Jul. 22nd will see headliners Eric Andre, Flying Lotus, and Sarah Squirm, just to name a few, take over what should be a wildly colorful outdoor genre-bending comedy/music/performance festival/experience. In fact, there will even be a Smiling Friends experience and a”Pop-Tarts Dining Experience” in the mix in addition to many other offbeat delights that have yet to be announced.

Though LA has gotten to enjoy The Adult Swim Festival the past few go arounds, at least all you have to figure out for this 2023 edition is how to get to San Diego that weekend and where you’ll sleep (or, conversely, how you’ll keep the party going for all three days).

Adult Swim Festival Is Going Virtual Once Again 11/12 & 11/13

Whether you feel the pandemic is over or not, it’s undeniable that this past year and a half has shown the reach one could have by broadcasting a live performance onto the interwebs.

That’s probably part of why the Adult Swim Festival is doing another virtual edition that will feature the same sort of treasured collection of performers it would have in person, but from the convenience of YouTube (and HBO Max). Just over a month from now, you can, for free, tune into “never-before-seen” live performances form the likes of such Adult Swim comedy darlings as Jo Firestone, Joe Pera, Rick & Morty, Negin Farsad, Squidbillies, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. We have no doubt they’ll add more to the line-up as Thurs. Nov. 11th & Fri. Nov. 12th comes closer.

With that in mind, set a reminder to tune into this year’s virtual Adult Swim Festival and all its weird and wondrous virtual glory here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 33: Chad Damiani & Clowning/Idiot in a Pandemic

Before COVID-19 took hold, a new form of “clowning” that was so much more rebellious and absurd than most other live comedy, or even any clowning you likely would have seen in the past, had really started to take hold in Los Angeles. Through the last few years, such inspired, spirited, and ingenious performers like Chad Damiani were instrumental into not only pushing the boundaries of what you could do with blending characters, improv, physical comedy, etc. on a live stage, but pushing the boundaries of what you could do with live comedy as a whole. Chad dives into the whole world of clowning/idiot, with TCB’s Jake Kroeger, as it was in 2019 going into 2020 and what the clowning/idiot community has had to do to adapt to the pandemic (a growing number of outdoor shows in parks). Also, some quick “hot” takes on Adult Swim Festival’s full virtual line-up and Sacha Baron Cohen setting his sights for Mark Zuckerberg.

Adult Swim Festival 2020 Announces Full Virtual Line-Up

November 9, 2020

While there were impromptu celebration at the official downfall of ego-maniacal Captain Planet villain Trump, there are more celebrations of all kinds to be had this month. The COVID-19 pandemic is still going on, so something like a big comedy and music festival is still going to be virtual. Yet, Adult Swim has tapped their resources and connections for what should be a pretty spectacular virtual shindig. Also, they’ve been live-streaming for quite some time, well before COVID hit, so don’t be surprised if they have a few tricks up their sleeves.

Today, they just announced their full line-up, which includes live-streams from Rick and Morty, The Eric Andre Show, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Tuca & Bertie and live-chat watch-alongs of Space Ghost: Coast 2 Coast, Three Busy Debras, Metalocalypse, and, as you can see above, so much more.

Best of all, Adult Swim Festival will all be free to stream on YouTube, right here, this Fri. Nov. 13th and Sat. Nov. 14th.

For your convenience, here’s the schedule:

Adult Swim Is Going Virtual For Another Festival

October 20, 2020
News

All in person festivals for 2020, of course, had been cancelled due to COVID-19, but some opted to do a virtual event. This Summer, Adult Swim opted to throw an entire virtual festival under the banner of Adult Swim Con with a limited run of live-streams that they’d normally do up big in person.

So, with mass gatherings still being a terrible idea, Adult Swim is going virtual for their annual Adult Swim Festival, which will be streamed live on YouTube, Fri. Nov. 13th & Sat. Nov. 14th. They’ve lined-up their usual, big time suspects with Rick and Morty, The Eric Andre Show, and Run The Jewels. Assuredly, there will be more that Adult Swim has up their sleeve, but we’ll just have to wait and see until next month.

More importantly, it would seem the time at which we can all go back to normal big time comedy and music and arts festivals is still a ways away.

Adult Swim Festival Announces 2019 Line-Up

On top of having cutting edge music, comedy, and art, this year’s Adult Swim Festival will be at the Banc of California Stadium at Exposition Park (near USC) (instead of an outdoor mall near Skid Row) on Fri. & Sat. Nov. 15th & 16th.

For our money, a live Eric Andre Show, exclusive Rick & Morty season 4 screening, Three Busy Debras, Jena Friedman, Joe Pera, Sarah Squirm, Wham City, and Conner O’Malley is a pretty great deal.

All the early bird tickets are sold out, so you can get a one day pass for $49 or two-day for $95. Or, if you want exclusive service, entry, all the free swag, open bar, and private bathrooms, you can drop a cool $900 on a Prestige Plus 2 Day Pass.

Starting tomorrow and going through the whole weekend, the maiden voyage of the Adult Swim Festival will kick off just East of DTLA.

As you can see above, the line-up is pretty damn stacked. RTJ and the Rick and Morty Musical Ricksperience is great enough reason alone to go to this even though the rest of the line-up makes one hell of a festival. You can still get festival passes here.

The rest of our listings for comedy shows, events, screenings, open mics, maps, and more can be found at www.thecomedybureau.com.

The First Ever Rick and Morty Musical Will Take Place at the Adult Swim Festival in LA

We’re sure it’s already been said already, but it kind of bares repeating in this case that Rick and Morty and this Rick and Morty Musical Ricksperience will SHOW. US. WHAT. THEY. GOT.

A full fledged musical stage production will be one of the highlights of Adult Swim’s very first comedy and musical festival, The Adult Swim Festival, in DTLA slated for this October.

Since this is the debut across the board, maybe Adult Swim will pay for a giant floating Cromulon head as well as some practical effects simulating the portal gun? We’ll just have to wait and see if that would happen in this dimension or hope that it happens in another.
