TCB Debriefing 7/13/23: JFL Montreal, SAG-AFTRA Strike, Quiz Lady, Kill Rock Stars, WWDITS

July 13, 2023
News
awkwafina, jfl montreal, just for laughs, kill rock stars, papp johnson, quiz lady, sag-aftra, sandra oh, strike, what we do in the shadows

1. JFL Montreal 2023 line-up (minus New Faces of Comedy, of course)

2. SAG-AFTRA will go on strike just past midnight tonight, joining the WGA in their fight for a fair contract from the AMPTP. All union productions will cease that haven’t been shut down already, which includes plenty of comedies and film festivals and film premieres might as well have tumbleweeds roll down the red carpet until a new contract is agreed upon. This will absolutely affect comedies in production, coming up for release (no more fun Barbie press events), and potential upcoming projects (especially since SAG-AFTRA covers voiceover work as well). Get ready for a bunch of reality TV and game shows, even more than what is already being shoved down our collective throats.

3. Quiz Lady, a buddy road comedy starring Awkwafina and Sandra Oh, is set to premiere Nov. 3rd (Deadline) and hopefully both strikes will be over by then and the duo can have a fun late night appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

4. Famous punk record label, Kill Rock Stars, are relaunching their comedy division and starting off with an album release from Papp Johnson. Here’s a sneak peek here.

5. Just a friendly reminder that What We Do In the Shadows, one of the most enduringly funniest shows on TV, returns for season 5 tonight on FX and Hulu. It’s mandatory viewing as far as we’re concerned, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the Television Academy.

6. With both professional writers and actors going on strike, you better bet that stand-up comedy is going to even more crowded than it already is.

SNL Post Editors Set Date of April Fools Day to Strike If NBCU Doesn’t Reach New Contract Agreement

(via Deadline)

For months now, the post-production editors of Saturday Night Live, the department crucial to many of the most viral clips on SNL these days, have been trying to negotiate a contract renewal as a unionized group with NBC Universal. No such agreement has been reached at this point and, as such, the SNL Post-Production Editors have set a date for April 1st to walk out in the fight for fair wages and health benefits.

Doing post production for a live-to-air show usually means that crunch time is all the time. That is the pace of Saturday Night Live in general, but one often only hears of the long hours and wild turnaround times for the writers and performers. The crew and staff behind SNL are under the same sort of pressures, but operate thanklessly (at least from the general public) in the shadows. So, it shouldn’t be the case that people that are putting together all the fake commercials, graphics, etc. should be struggling with their pay or health care for such an TV and comedy institution as Saturday Night Live.

We can only hope their terms are met by NBCU as April 1st just happens to be on a Saturday.

Also, it should be noted that April Fools’ Day is finally getting a much needed shake-up.

‘Last Comic Standing’ Editors’ Strike Ends with Union Deal

The editors of Last Comic Standing at NBC got to unionize under IATSE and the show will move forward, as far as we can tell, and still premiere on May 22nd.

WIth this deal, the strike only lasted two days, which will hopefully become more the case in future entertainment strikes.

NBC’s ‘Last Comic Standing’ Hit With Editors Strike

The editors of this current season of Last Comic Standing are on strike for a union contract that would include health insurance and pension benefits. There is no word on whether this will halt the premiere of the latest season.

We’re guessing that NBC would like to keep that hush hush for as long as possible. Let’s hope that matter gets resolved agreeably and many comedians who deserve the exposure get on national TV.
