TCB Debriefing 3/1-3/4/24: Dan Soder, DO NOT EXPECT TOO MUCH FROM THE END OF THE WORLD, Hacks, Worldwide Comedy Month, Martin McDonagh

1. Much of the art form of stand-up comedy comes in subtleties. The skills of presence and delivery and writing often are best when they’re seamless in someone’s act. If you throw in some of the very best impressions/voices at the ready, you’ll get a fantastic piece of stand-up from one Dan Soder. Soder’s second special, On The Road, just released on YouTube covers a lot of common ground when it comes to subject matter, but Dan’s almost undeniable warmth, specificity in his takes, and uncanny knack for nailing a voice of a character really this 40 minute special crackle, almost without you knowing it since it’s delivered so very casually. A more classical, observational style of stand-up can still very much work in 2024, especially if your name is Dan Soder. Please enjoy Dan Soder: On The Road here.

2. It would make sense that a movie called DO NOT EXPECT TOO MUCH FROM THE END OF THE WORLD throws pretty much every traditional cinematic and narrative convention aggressively out of a window. Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude made a foreign comedy/satire that thankfully isn’t a cutesy rom com or fish-out-of-water story, but something that feels more akin to an episode of The Eric Andre Show. See for yourself with the official trailer here.

3. Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder return as one of the best duos that television has to offer these days on Hacks. Please enjoy a taste of what’s to come with season 3 with Hacks S3 teaser here (then set a reminder for the premiere on May 2nd on Max).

4. 800 Pound Gorilla Media is declaring April as Worldwide Comedy Month and given what April 1st is, was there really any other choice.

5. For as much as Hong Kong has really squashed any sort of subversive ideas, especially regarding beliefs, philosophies that don’t fall in line with Beijing and Xi Jinping, it’s pretty curious that one Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Banshees of Inisherin), one of the more subversive voices we have in film and theater, is having a “Masterclass Retrospective” in the upcoming Hong Kong International Film Festival (Deadline)

6. We’ll leave you with this: NYC comedian Nomie K. Baker joins in a 24 hour vigil to demand the NYC City Council call for a ceasefire in Gaza and a sobering reminder that innocent folks are dying every day in Gaza and that noise should be continued to be made for a ceasefire until it happens.

Martin McDonagh Offers Up Another Serving of the Darkest Comedy He Can Cook Up with “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

Admittedly, we went into watching this movie wanting to already like it. It’s not objective, but humans still work here at TCB and we happen to be big fans of Martin McDonagh. If you follow us closely, you know that we have a penchant for very dark comedy, which part of the reason we were looking forward to seeing Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri.

As we suspected might happen, we laughed heartily throughout watching it this Thanksgiving weekend.

Between In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, and the latest, Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri, writer/director/playwright Martin McDonagh has his dark comedy formula figured out with his favorite players including Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Peter Dinklage, etc. There’s a sense of a morality tale on the surface, but there’s often no nicely packaged moral to be had at all and all the characters involved lose in some fashion. In a It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia sort of way, we really enjoy that dynamic, which runs throughout Three Billboards.

There’s a bit of “deus ex machina” in setting up the big comedic and uber-dark set pieces, but, we guess, that’s where our expectations overlooked a few janky plot devices.

With so much anger and vitriol that’s present in everyday life now, seeing hate play out with no clear winners (as an integral part of the human experience is being flawed in some way) was oddly calming, which was what we really needed for Thanksgiving.

Please Watch Red Band Trailer for Martin McDonagh’s “Three  Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” ASAP

Playwright, filmmaker, writer Martin McDonagh, who has mastered how to explore the darkest corners of humanity and still make it funny (see In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths for proof), has a new film coming out, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

It has every bit of pure, bleakly dark comic punch that McDonagh is famous for as well as one of his muses, Sam Rockwell.

We really want the red band trailer to floor you kind of like it did us, so we won’t say much more. However, you should really take note how great Frances McDormand is in a role of “giving absolutely zero f*cks”.

Watch it here and then keep a close eye for a release sometime this year.

Martin McDonagh Getting His Own Festival Celebrating Him in Siberia

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

Having been a master at dark comedy for some time now, Martin McDonagh, is getting an entire festival in his honor. The writer/director of In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths as well as one of the most accomplished playwrights of our time having written and directed such plays as The Pillowman and A Behanding in Spokane will be honored in, of all places, Perm, Siberia in Russia.

Apparently, McDonagh is a big hit in Siberia and the local theater U Mosta is reportedly the only theater to stage all of his plays. The Martin McDonagh Festival will run from Oct. 7th-10th and feature performances and screenings of his plays and films.

So, you might want to get your plane tickets and passport for this.
