Pick of the Day: The Lesbian Agenda with Sophie Santos (in NYC & LA) 6/13 & 6/28

June 8, 2022
News
ashley gavin, bell house, brooklyn, cameron esposito, comedy show, jess henderson, julia shiplett, liza treyger, matt rogers, maya deshmukh, nyc comedy, paul scheer, pride, sabrina wu, sdynee washington, sirbaby girl, sophie santos

Before even acknowledging that its Pride Month, any time of the year is a great time of year to catch Sophie Santos‘ quest for queer dominance via her creation, The Lesbian Agenda. That said, it’s Pride and it’s an especially good time to go support great queer artists of every background, especially when it comes to live comedy.

The Lesbian Agenda has already taken over both coasts by firmly planting roots in NYC and LA, which is a pretty great start to cultural domination in the U.S.

In fact, there are upcoming dates for both cities with The Lesbian Agenda taking over The Bell House in Brooklyn on Mon. Jun. 13th and Dynasty Typewriter in LA on Tues. Jun. 28th, both at 7:30PM local time. Both have incredibly stacked, festival-worthy line-ups including:

NYC:
Ashley Gavin
Sirbaby Girl
Matt Rogers
Sabrina Wu
Julia Shiplett
Jess Henderson
Maya Deshmukh as Cara Delevingne
Che Diaz

Pick of the Day: The Good Good Laugh Show (Benefitting #STOPAAPIHATE) 4/29

April 26, 2021
News
atsuko okatsuka, garron chiu, jes tom, julia shiplett, miss shu mai, stand up comedy, stop aapi hate, teresa lee

Sure, there’s an anti-Asian hate crimes bill making its way through Congress and two Asian women won Oscars last night, but that still doesn’t mean the fight against anti-Asian hate crimes is over. There was such an alarming rise of those hate crimes that are very well documented at this point that turning the tide is going to be a long and daunting fight.

So, supporting orgs like #STOPAAPIHATE are crucial to making long, lasting sustainable change and thus enjoying comedy shows benefitting such orgs is a great way to do just that. That’s part of why you should check out The Good Good Laugh Show live-stream that’s raising money for #STOPAAPIHATE this Thurs. Apr. 29th at 7PM PT/10PM ET.

The other part of why you shouldn’t miss out here is that it has a fantastic line-up of Asian and Pacific Islander comedy and drag acts including:

ATSUKO OKATSUKA
GARRON CHIU
JES TOM
JULIA SHIPLETT
MISS SHU MAI
& host Teresa Lee!

Get your tickets for $15 for The Good Good Laugh Show right here.

Pick of the Day: Bling Empire: A Live Reading Fundraiser 2/24

February 15, 2021
News
bling empire, bowen yang, chinatown, chinatown love, fumi abe, irene tu, jes tom, joel kim booster, julia shiplett, kiko soiree, nori reed, peter kim, sherry cola, Tien Tran

Comedians doing a live read for a reality show is already a good enough sell as is.

Having a line-up of Bowen Yang, Joel Kim Booster, Nori Reed, Jared Goldstein, Sherry Cola, Julia Shiplett, Tien Tran, and more do a live-read of a specific episode of Bling Empire is even better.

Doing that all for the sake of directly supporting Asian communities (at a time that Asian communities direly need backing from everyone due to an upward trend in hate crimes against Asians) in both LA and NYC shouldn’t even be the reason that you’d go in for this live-reading, but if that’s it, then so be it.

Thus, you should get tickets via a $10 suggested donation to the upcoming Bling Empire: A Live Reading Fundraiser on Wed. Feb. 24th at 6PM PT/9PM ET that’s raising money for Chinatown Community for Equitable Development (LA) and Send Chinatown Love (NYC).  You can and should get more details/donate/tickets/live-stream access here.

Pick of the Day: Torture Ben Wasserman 12/15

December 14, 2020
News
Ben Wasserman, brian bahe, brooklyn eviction defense, eviction defense, jo firestone, julia shiplett, Kyle Harris, Marcia Belsky, Milly Tamarez

Defending against evictions right now during this historic pandemic is so crucial that comedian Ben Wasserman is seemingly up for anything to raise money for Brooklyn Eviction Defense. In fact, he’s so down for the cause that he’s putting on a show called Torture Ben Wasserman wherein very special guests (including NYC favorites Jo Firestone, Marcia Belsky, Julia Shiplett, Milly Tamarez, Kyle Harris, and Brian Bahe) will subject him to challenges that seem to be at their whim while he’s doing the simple, yet infamous “cinnamon challenge”.

The exhibition of Ben’s suffering for comedy’s sake will hopefully prevent potential suffering of those at risk of eviction at this time.

Torture Ben Wasserman is set for Tues. Dec. 15th at 5:30PM PT/8:30PM ET. Donations will be accepted ($5-$10 is suggested). FYI, “for every $25 raised, Ben will up the ante all for your sick and twisted pleasure.”

You may not get to do trick-or-treating or endless party-hopping, but you can tune in what might be the perfect comedy thing for this Halloween season. They describe it as:

Mere days before Salem’s 10th Annual Harvest Festival, something strange happens that derails the big day and makes everyone start to question if there could be a witch among them. If you’ve ever wondered what THE CRUCIBLE meets THE OFFICE but very gay would be like, SALEM is your answer.

Supported by many of the very best comedy folks from all over the country including: Mary Beth Barone, Carmen Christopher, Drew Droege, Robby Hoffman, Molly Kearney, Langston Kerman, Marty Miller, Aparna Nancherla, Larry Owens, Rachel Sennott, Karolena Theresa, Sydnee Washington, and Ben Wasserman
