Please Enjoy Trailer for Jesse Eisenberg’s Writer/Director Debut When You Finish Saving the World

Jesse Eisenberg has already put himself back on the map with the genre-bending romantic dramedy mystery Fleishman Is In Trouble. The acclaim of that series is leading him into 2023 when his very first feature film, When You Finish Save The World, which, altogether, might make next year a banner year for Eisenberg.

When You Finish Save The World is enticing before you even press play on the trailer with a cast of Finn Wolfhard and Julianne Moore as a mother and son at odds with each other as he is trying to find himself and, of course, A24 putting their stamp of approval on it. From first glance, it has sharp and very nuanced writing that almost suggests a spiritual sequel to Bo Burnham’s very own celebrated coming-of-age dramedy, Eighth Grade. That’s enough to sell us on going to see it when it hits theaters in limited release as soon as we can.

Go see for yourself with the first trailer for When You Finish Saving The World here, then look for it in theaters near you starting Jan. 20th, 2023.

“Art of Self Defense” Might Be the Dark Comedy of the Summer

To date, this might be the Jesse Eisenberg’s most perfect role. The terrified man desperately seeking to become what he fears in this offbeat, deliciously dark comedic morality tale (throw a bit of existential absurdity in there as well) is something Eisenberg truly shines as in The Art of Self-Defense. Additionally,  Alessandro Nivola has a perfect turn as psycho villain sensei and so does Imogen Poots with her renegade protégé character.

This latest feature from writer-director Riley Stearns has bits of the quietly menacing humor that you might get from The Square or Computer Chess, making it all the more refreshing in this season of big-budget-tentpole fatigue. There are times you might wonder if you’re in a more sinister universe in the movie or if it’s a cheeky mirror of our own, which works to great comic effect.

Above all, The Art of Self-Defense scorches the idea of masculinity on so many levels. So, we’d say go catch whenever and wherever you can.

Oh yeah, The Art of Self-Defense comes out in limited release starting this weekend on July 12th. Find showtimes here.

The Art of Self-Defense Trailer Promises a Deliciously Wry Dark Comedy

It has been more than a decade since we’ve gotten a great dark comedy centered around taking and giving martial arts lessons (i.e. The Foot Fist Way came out in 2006).

Yet, from the looks of this trailer of Riley Stearns’ The Art of Self Defense, we’ve got a wonderfully dark, subtly ridiculous comedy that perhaps put Jesse Eisenberg in a perfect role as a man desperate to conquer his fears of other men via ‘strip-mall karate’.

If you’re digging it, look for The Art of Self-Defense to come out in theaters in July.

Jesse Eisenberg To Star In, Write and Direct a Single Camera Comedy About the Tragedy of Our Current Job Market for J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot

Could this be a possible spiritual sequel to Adventureland?

It’s most likely not anything of the sort, but we’re excited to see Eisenberg get a role that’s more along these lines as opposed to playing supervillain, Lex Luthor.

Proving more and more to be a more grounded version of NBC’s Chuck, Jesse Eisenberg shows off more of slacker/sleeper agent skills as well as balancing being Kristen Stewart’s beau in the new trailer for American Ultra from Nima Nourizadeh and Max Landis.

In a way, it should give you a little more faith in him playing Lex Luthor in Batman vs. Superman.

Watch the trailer here, then look for American Ultra in theaters Aug. 21st.

Watch Red Band Trailer For Stoner Action Comedy “American Ultra”

Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart star in what might be a better feature length version of the premise to NBC’s Chuck in the upcoming stoner action comedy, American Ultra.

Watch Eisenberg recall the part where he stops running in Zombieland (along with the font from Zombieland) and takes on various covert operatives as a deep secret covert operative himself while also trying to come down from being high.

As far as stoner/slacker action comedy goes, it seems slightly more grounded and realistic than Chuck or even Pineapple Express. Yet, it still enjoys the fun of some of the most unrealistic bullet physics since Wanted. Connie Britton and Topher Grace also seem like they’ll make memorable cameos as comedic versions of David Strathairn and Joan Allen in The Bourne Ultimatum.

See all of this for yourself in this red band trailer.

Jesse Eisenberg Adapting His McSweeney’s Short Stories “Bream Gives Me The Hiccups” Into Series For Amazon

Between nailing roles as different neurotic or anxious people a few years ago, Jesse Eisenberg has been writing a short stories focused for McSweeney’s called Bream Gives Me The Hiccups: Restaurant Reviews From A Privileged Nine-Year-Old.

Eisenberg is now adapting these into a series for Amazon Studios. This adds to the big names that Amazon has been lining up on their development slate like Woody Allen.

It would seem that this is probably going to be live action, but it could work just as well animated. Either way, Amazon needs to get to its next cycle already.

Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart to Star in ‘American Ultra’

Whatever your feelings about Adventureland (Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart last starred together in it) were, you have to admit the idea of a stoner having a government operation set to terminate him is pretty intriguing, especially if that stoner is Jesse Eisenberg.
