Pick of the Day: Jess Salomon: Sad Witch Album Recording (in NYC) 6/29

June 20, 2023

One of the most thoughtful (and, of course, undeniably funny) voices in NYC comedy belongs to one, Jess Salomon. Hailing from both Canada and a career as a U.N. war crimes lawyer, Salomon has a knack for keeping a cheery vibe while very cleverly satirizing the world around her. She has become a staple of the NYC comedy scene and a true joy wherever else she plays (certainly, a bright spot on any line-up we’ve seen her in whenever she’s in LA).

Jess will be taping a full length comedy album next week, Sad Witch, at the revered Brooklyn comedy theater, Union Hall, and you really ought to be in attendance for what should be a damn fine hour of stand-up comedy. There are two shows on Thurs. Jun. 29th, 7:30PM & 10PM, with an opening set from DeAnne Smith. Tickets are only $11.55 and you best go get them here and here, respectively right now.

Pick of the Day: BBC World Service Presents Comedians vs. the News (in NYC) 3/8

The panel show, often comprised of comedians weighing in on the news, is a time honored institution in the UK, bringing many of the UK’s biggest comedians their first bit of exposure. Outside of Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn and Chelsea Lately (and maybe @midnight?), there hasn’t been the same sort of fervor for comedians giving their several cents on the pressing topics of the day in America as it has been across the pond.

We’re not sure why it hasn’t caught on quite as much (now would be an even more perfect time for Tough Crowd in our opinion), but that shouldn’t deter comedians riffing over the news. If you need some sugar to have some of the very hard tasting medicine that the news has been for the last several years (and want something other than the feel good factory that was John Krasinski’s Some Good News or the same old set-up punch sort of monologue jokes), you might want to take advantage of any American comedian news panel show.

Lucky for you, BBC World Service is having that very thing happen under the moniker Comedians vs. The News with the astounding comedy power couple that is Jess Salomon and Eman El-Husseini and guests (and also very funny comedy people) Josh Gondelman and Zarna Garg taking on whatever is wreaking havoc on the world at the moment.

Catch this Comedians vs. The News in person at the Greene Space in NYC on Tues. Mar. 8th at 7PM ET. Tickets are free, but you better RSVP before they run out right here.

Please Enjoy Jess Salomon’s American Late Night Debut on The Tonight Show

It’s undeniable that Jess Salomon’s smile and energy is infectious (would it surprise you to know that she’s Canadian?). On top of that, she has a wildly fascinating life story (we don’t want to ruin it, but where she came from to comedy and the woman she married could make for a pretty enticing memoir), which makes her debut on The Tonight Show, pretty memorable.

Please enjoy her set here.

Please Enjoy “The El Salomons”, an Irresistibly Adorable Comic Strip About a Real Life Married Jewish-Palestinian Lesbian Couple

This is definitely one of those instances where truth is stranger (and possibly more delightful?) than fiction.

Jess Salomon and Eman El-Husseini are both very funny comedians based out of NYC that just happen to be Jewish and Palestinian, respectively, and married to each other. That alone could be a pitch for a TV show.

For now, you can enjoy their story in the comic strip The El Salomons on Instagram wonderfully illustrated by Jesse Brown. We will not be surprised one bit if this becomes an actual cartoon series somewhere in the near future.

The story between actually married-Canadian-Palestinian-Jewish-comedian couple Jess Salomon and Eman El Husseini is fascinating and uplifting. You can hear that story as they’re playing a special show, since they’re in town right now, this Sunday at the Pico Union Project right near DTLA.

Tickets are $15 and you can (and should) get them here.
