Charlie Hebdo Victims Being Honored as Gargoyles

This will be a pretty neat way to remember to honor freedom of expression.

The restoration of a tower that used to be execute rebels and martyrs during the rule of Louis XVIII in the French town of La Rochelle is going to have the added accoutrement of perching stone visages of those employed at satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo that were tragically murdered in an attack earlier this year.

As gargoyles, they’ll give the tower a new significance that will hopefully encourage to speak and express freely and honors those who died for it, especially when it comes making fun of those who so many others are afraid of.

The price of certain issues of Charlie Hebdo will undoubtedly have gone up.

Months after the attack on the French satirical magazine’s offices, Charlie Hebdo has opted to not depict the Prophet Muhammad in their cartoons.

Charlie Hebdo editor Laurent Sourisseau explained, “We’ve done our job. We have defended the right to caricature. We still believe that we have the right to criticize all religions. The mistakes you could blame Islam for can be found in other religions,” in an interview with German Stern Magazine.

It’s too early to tell, but we’re curious if stopping drawing a particular cartoon of a religious figure will actually put a noticeable stop to any violence instigated by the corresponding religious extremists.

Normally, the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo prints around 60,000 copies every week.

However, their latest issue is sort of a lightning rod as it is the issue following the attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo last week. So, a plan to print a million copies and then 3 million has now been upped to 5 million copies of what is being referred to as “The Survivors’ Issue” with the promised cartoon of Prophet Muhammad on the cover. Very shortly after the issue hit newsstands in France, 3 million copies had sold out and even auctioning on eBay for the historic issue skyrocketed to hundreds of Euros.

Soon, this issue of Charlie Hebdo will also be printed in English and a dozen or so other languages and made available in several countries for the first time.

We wouldn’t be surprised when copies hit U.S. newsstands will go just as fast, especially since it doesn’t look like Charlie is going to make a digital issue for purchase.

You might have heard by now that French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo was attacked by terrorists who claimed 12 lives.

Jon Stewart and Conan O’Brien made sure to take time for their late night programs to express their grief over the tragedy on The Daily Show and Conan, respectively.

Also, Louis C.K., in a sign of solidarity with Charlie Hebdo, used a marker to write “Charlie Hebdo” while playing Madison Square Garden last night.

HUGE s/o to LouisCK for taking a sharpie to his tee, spreading awareness for #CharlieHebdo. Great show, great job. pic.twitter.com/kzQYohmauE

With all the well wishing going around the globe, you’ll be happy to know that Charlie Hebdo’s next issue will have a million copies published as opposed to their usual 60K (via The Hollywood Reporter).

So, maybe you’ll want to get a copy when it comes out next week.
