The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 47: Leonard Robinson & New (Inclusive) Frontiers

February 17, 2021
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
cap city comedy club, comedy store, creek and the cave, groundlings, insecure, Leonard Robinson, mr and mrs smith

A member of the Groundlings Main Company, Comedy Store regular, and Taurean on Insecure, Leonard Robinson joins TCB’s Jake Kroeger  to talk on how the Groundlings have survived/thrived through both virtual improv/sketch shows almost kind of like they used to do in person (with a few clever changes for Zoom) and how they’re moving forward with diversity and inclusion measures (even beyond what they were already doing before last summer). Also, Robinson gives just a little insight on Insecure season 5 and “hot” takes on the Phoebe Waller-Bridge/Donald Glover reboot of Mr & Mrs. Smith and the reopening of Cap City and The Creek & The Cave down in Austin, TX.

Austin’s Revered Cap City Comedy Club Will Actually Be Reopening in the Fall

February 11, 2021
News
austin, cap city comedy club

Though announced that it was closing its doors for good in September 2020, Cap City Comedy Club has had a reversal of fortune and will be reopening sometime this Fall.

The legendary club had served audiences from Austin and all around for over 3 decades, but suffered devastating financial losses due to the continued lockdown as a result of COVID-19. Thusly, the decision for a permanent closure was previously made.

Right at the moment, live comedy is happening in Austin, TX (though COVID-19 still runs rampant throughout America and both Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan recently contracted the virus while performing in Austin) and some comedians have made their way over there, even from LA, to do in-person shows. Austin has had a robust comedy scene for more than few years now and that is even under more of a spotlight since LA, NYC, and Chicago are not nearly as open as Texas is.

Whether or not the rollout of the vaccine improves will obviously determine reopening for comedy clubs/venues, but, at the very least, it’s great to hear that Cap City, one of comedians’ favorite comedy clubs will survive to the other side of the pandemic.

We're excited to announce that @CapCityComedy will be re-opening its doors this Fall!

We will continue our tradition of booking national acts, Austin-based comedians & cutting-edge up + comers, now in a new location at The Domain

After 35 Years, Austin’s Cap City Comedy Club to Permanently Close

(via CBS Austin)

For years now, we’ve heard that Cap City Comedy Club in Austin, TX is one of the best comedy clubs in the country. For much longer than our time here at TCB, Cap City has been a beloved, full time comedy venue by comedians of sorts of stature as well as being the hub of the annual Moontower Comedy Festival.

The enduring lockdown that has forced comedy clubs to remain dark for months and months and will very likely continue to do so has made the prospect of re-opening for many venues near impossible. In the case of Cap City, the uncertainty of when they’ll be able to effectively and safely put on shows again proved to be “insurmountable”. So, after 35 years of operation Cap City sent a letter to the city of Austin that they will not reopen at whatever time that will be able to happen in Austin. Rich Miller, Margie Coyle, Colleen McGarr and Duncan Strauss of Cap City are not entirely closing the door of Cap City coming back in some other form, but the pandemic has rendered the return in their current form unrealistic.

As far as nationally renowned comedy venues go, Improv Olympic in Chicago closed earlier this year along with all of UCB’s NYC-based venues and we have a hard time imagining these closures within comedy stopping at Cap City. So, with that in mind, it’s as good a time to remind everyone about the National Independent Venues Association (NIVA) and their push to get more relief for venues that will have to remain closed because of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
