TCB Debriefing 7/13/23: JFL Montreal, SAG-AFTRA Strike, Quiz Lady, Kill Rock Stars, WWDITS

July 13, 2023
News
awkwafina, jfl montreal, just for laughs, kill rock stars, papp johnson, quiz lady, sag-aftra, sandra oh, strike, what we do in the shadows

1. JFL Montreal 2023 line-up (minus New Faces of Comedy, of course)

2. SAG-AFTRA will go on strike just past midnight tonight, joining the WGA in their fight for a fair contract from the AMPTP. All union productions will cease that haven’t been shut down already, which includes plenty of comedies and film festivals and film premieres might as well have tumbleweeds roll down the red carpet until a new contract is agreed upon. This will absolutely affect comedies in production, coming up for release (no more fun Barbie press events), and potential upcoming projects (especially since SAG-AFTRA covers voiceover work as well). Get ready for a bunch of reality TV and game shows, even more than what is already being shoved down our collective throats.

3. Quiz Lady, a buddy road comedy starring Awkwafina and Sandra Oh, is set to premiere Nov. 3rd (Deadline) and hopefully both strikes will be over by then and the duo can have a fun late night appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

4. Famous punk record label, Kill Rock Stars, are relaunching their comedy division and starting off with an album release from Papp Johnson. Here’s a sneak peek here.

5. Just a friendly reminder that What We Do In the Shadows, one of the most enduringly funniest shows on TV, returns for season 5 tonight on FX and Hulu. It’s mandatory viewing as far as we’re concerned, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the Television Academy.

6. With both professional writers and actors going on strike, you better bet that stand-up comedy is going to even more crowded than it already is.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 98: Katrina Davis & What Apologies Are Missing

Katrina Davis has not only charmed the LA comedy scene in the years since she moved here, but has become a trailblazer for being one of the first comedians to have both a virtual audience and live audience together at her show. In general, her passion to continue with both in-person and virtual comedy ought to light the way for more stubborn or purist comedians. She shares her pandemic era comedy journey with TCB’s Jake Kroeger as well as getting to actually hot hot takes on the Joe Rogan-Spotify saga and Awkwafina’s apology for her use of a “blaccent”/AAVE.

Watch Entire “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens” Pilot

Several years ago, a music video for a track entitled “NYC Bitche$” by one Awkwafina somehow found its way into one of our recommended feeds. Brash, loud, and silly, we really dug it and was curious was to come of rapper Awkwafina. Perhaps, something that was a little more expansive to the tone and attitude was in store for the nascent rap star?

You might very well know that Awkwafina AKA Nora Lum ascended into film stardom via Ocean’s 8 and The Farewell and now, her own semi-autobiographical series Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens premiered on Comedy Central this week. The series itself, from watching the pilot, makes good on the sort of bold, fun spirit we had first seen out of Awkwafina all those years ago.

Awkwafina really gets to shine as herself and it’s pretty damn fun to watch. So, get into the pilot, which Comedy Central was nice enough to put on YouTube, then make a reminder that new episodes of Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens airs Wednesdays at 10:30PM on Comedy Central.

‘Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens’ Renewed For Season 2 at Comedy Central Before Premiere

Comedy Central is doubling down on its latest series a week before it even premieres on the network. Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens is getting a 2nd season and the first season has yet to premiere (series premiere is set for Jan. 22nd).

Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens already has a lot going for it with the titular Awkwafina coming off a pretty great 2019, especially with all the accolades she garnered for The Farewell. It’s obvious that the network is looking for its next critical/commercial hit and we’ll just all have to wait and see if that will be the case for Comedy Central’s latest scripted series.

Certainly, the trailer shows promise, especially if you’ve been following Awkwafina since her exclusive rap days.

“Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens” Trailer Shows Off Awkwafina’s Expanding Empire Moving Into TV

Originally, just a rapper, Awkwafina/Nora Lum has now expanded her reach into starring in movies (Ocean’s 8, The Farewell), both in comedy and drama, and, as of Jan. 22nd, leading off her own semi-autobiographical TV series about growing up in NYC as the one and only Awkwafina.

From the looks of it, not only is this Awkwafina maintaining a wide acting range, furthering her star power, and offering up something that looks pretty enticing to us, but it also seems as Comedy Central has the perfect series to follow-up Broad City with.

Take a look for yourself with the Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens trailer here, then look for the series premiere on Comedy Central on Wed. Jan. 22nd.

Comedy Central Orders Eponymous Awkwafina Project and Robbie Starring and Co-Written by Rory Scovel to Series

Comedy Central Orders Eponymous Awkwafina Project and Robbie Starring and Co-Written by Rory Scovel to Series

This pair of series orders for Awkwafina and Robbie at Comedy Central puts a smile on our faces over here at the Bureau.

Awkwafina continues Akwafina’s hot streak from Ocean’s 8, Crazy Rich Asians, and SNL to having her very own sitcom based on her salad days in Brooklyn. Robbie (co-written by Anthony King) also puts the amazing Rory Scovel in a role that we’ve already imagined him doing so well, a highly pressured youth basketball league coach. That’s probably because we’ve seen him riff out a hilarious half time speech on stage at least a few times.

Also, we’re pretty psyched for supporting roles from BD Wong and Beau Bridges in each show respectively.

We’ll be waiting as patiently as we can for their trailers to get that first taste of what’s to come.
