Here are the rest of the comedy winners for the Creative Arts Emmys and the Interactive Media Emmys as well as the complete list of Emmys winners.

For the most part, heavy perennial favorites won here, and deservingly so, like Veep, Transparent, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Key & Peele got a proper send-off for the final season with this Emmy win and what might be talked about as one of Louie Anderson’s best performances of his career in Baskets as the mother nabbed him a statue as well. Also, Master of None’s writing definitely earned its Emmy win here.

Take note of the power of premium cable and streaming services, particularly HBO and Amazon, in this round of winners.

As campaigning for The Emmys is heating up, The Hollywood Reporter is doing another round of their great, in-depth roundtable discussions.

Their latest brought together comedy actors that are Emmys contenders, which includes…

Jeffrey Tambor…

…Aziz Ansari…

…Jerrod Carmichael…

…Rob Lowe…

…Tony Hale…

…and Keegan Michael Key.

They touch on anything from representation of minorities to the most embarrassing moments, which Rob Lowe probably takes the cake with his dark secret (it’ll probably come up during his roast).

Comedy Central Does the Right Thing and Has Made Every “Key & Peele” Sketch Available Online

FYI, more than half of their over 300 sketches never made it online.

Key & Peele has forever made its mark in comedy with their trailblazing, gut busting sketches including Obama’s Anger Translator and the East/West Bowl. During the series run, only a limited number of sketches from the actual broadcast version of the show made it online where Key & Peele enjoyed as much, if not more, popularity than they did on air at Comedy Central.

Now that the dust has settled (i.e. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele have made a movie and are involved in several other projects) Comedy Central has now had the hindsight to realize the true, long lasting, cultural value of Key & Peele. As such, they have overhauled the show’s site at cc.com to have every sketch, 176 which never made it online, available one click away.

So, if you’re reading this still, you need stop fooling yourself that you’re going to do anything else but stream Key & Peele sketches all day long right here.

In doing the rounds to promote their upcoming film Keanu, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live last night.

Of course, they chatted about how emotional the end of Key & Peele was and what it was like working on their new feature length film together. They also discussed what it was like going on a walking ghost tour with Wu Tang Clan member Method Man, which could have been a sketch all by itself.

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele got some ridiculous get-ups, ridiculous hair-dos, and plenty of top notch riffing coming during Super Bowl Sunday tomorrow.

This whole “Real Talk” event is in promotion of website building platform Squarespace (they made a whole website for this whole promotional stunt), which might be better than dropping several million for 30 seconds of commercial air time.

So, maybe mute the TV except for the commercials and have this running over the game instead?

Got my Super Bowl squad ready. Hey Tina Fey, @MargotRobbie, Will Ferrell, @KeeganMKey, and @JordanPeele: Aim for the knees! #LSSC

Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, and Margot Robbie should make for a pretty special episode of The Late Show after this year’s Super Bowl. We mean, that’s in addition to whatever ultra clever stuff Colbert has up his sleeve on his own.

Oh yeah, you should check out what Stephen is up to at The Late Show these days. It’s pretty great and showcases how many gears, both comedic and emphatic, Colbert can shift in and out of even though he’s not in character.

It would seem that the worlds of sketch comedy and Vine meet at a single camera sitcom at Fox.

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele undoubtedly had a lot of things come across their desk as well as their own projects after finishing up with Key & Peele. It turns out it didn’t take them long at all to move on to their next project as they are now producing a new project at Fox with one of the writers from their show, Alex Rubens.

Vine megastar King Bach (AKA Andrew Bachelor) is set to star as an undercover cop that will tap into the King Bach persona that’s gotten Bachelor over 14 million followers.

We’ll be curious to see what comes of all of this as well as if Jordan and Keegan will be in front of the camera in some capacity.

With that said, farewell Key & Peele and thanks for all the times we almost couldn’t breathe from laughing so hard at your perfectly crafted, poignant work.

Looks like The Awesomes have a cross-online streaming service rival.

Bryan Cranston has a lot of irons on the fire post-Breaking Bad and finally one of them has been taken out and hammered it into what seems to be a fun sort of spin-off from Robot Chicken (Stoopid Buddy Studios, the folks behind Robot Chicken, produce this show) for Crackle, SuperMansion.

It follows old superheroes trying to stay relevant and feel meaningful in the world of today, though much more edgy and adult than The Incredibles seemingly a little more than Hulu’s similar series, The Awesomes.

It also boasts a star studded voice cast with Seth Green, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, Jillian Bell, Chris Pine, Ron Perlman, Famke Janssen, Donald Faison, Breckin Meyer, Anton Yelchin, and Nick Kroll.

Watch the trailer, which just made its premiere at Comic-Con, here, then look for its premiere this Fall on Crackle.

What Has Happened to Comedy on Broadcast Networks? (Hint: Lots of Canceling)

November 25, 2014
Uncategorized
a to z, abc, arrested development, big bang theory, black-ish, cbs, comedy central, community, cristela, fox, franklin and bash, fx, fxx, john stamos, key & peele, last comic standing, last man on earth, louie, manhattan love story, mindy project, nbc, new girl, portlandia, selfie, sullivan and son, the-simpsons, transparent, two and a half men, unbreakable kimmy schmidt, veep

It would be a little premature to say that there’s writing on the wall, but comedy definitely seems like it is playing second fiddle (or almost no fiddle at all) to hour long dramas at NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox. Comedy is currently flourishing on cable and online and, perhaps, that is where episodic comedy, wholly, is headed.

This TV season alone, freshman comedies Selfie, A to Z, Manhattan Love Story, and Bad Judge have been canceled along with relative new comers The Millers.

Community, Arrested Development, and now The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which had a series order from NBC but didn’t even make it to air, have moved from TV networks to online streaming services.

Just yesterday, it was announced ABC also scrapped a sitcom they had already ordered to series, Members Only starring John Stamos.

Bloggers and John Mulaney alike keep talking about whether Mulaney will last on Fox. On top of all of that, there are rumors that NBC has halted production on Last Comic Standing after it already had brought it back from the dead.

We’re not saying broadcast networks have drawn a hard line on in the sand (yet) prohibiting comedy from their airwaves. Cristela, black-ish, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine have found success just starting out and the networks have a few comedy mainstays like Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, and Two and Half Men. New Girl and The Mindy Project have also seemed to fared well in their tenure at Fox. Also, cable networks TBS and TNT have recently canceled Sullivan & Son and Franklin & Bash, respectively.

Still, this last couple of years have seen an unprecedented shift of the comedy genre as an aggregate on TV from going live on air to every household with a TV on a weeknight to niche cable networks and various online entities ranging anywhere from Netflix to YouTube to Amazon. Key & Peele, Louie, Portlandia, Veep, Transparent, and Children’s Hospital are all just a few perfect examples of this new paradigm.

The future for comedy on TV and the behemoths of television does have yet to be decided. The highly anticipated Last Man on Earth from Chris Miller and Phil Lord starring Will Forte is premiering next year. Networks, like CBS, are starting to get on board with their own streaming service.

What is clear in the current TV landscape, above all, is that the Internet isn’t going away and, because of that, viewers can watch whatever they want whenever they want to watch it. Thus, people will watch their favorite Key & Peele sketch as many as times as they can stand, binge watch The Simpsons via The Simpsons World app/site, consume as much media that exists online of their favorite comedians (i.e. web series, podcasts, stand-up clips, etc.), and do so at any time of any day in any place versus Thursdays at 8 at home,

In such an environment, it’s much harder than it used to be to launch a broad franchise sitcom that lasts 10 seasons and lives on in syndication, which has been the network TV model for comedy for decades. So, for now, as NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt poignantly remarked during Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s move to Netflix, “…we have a very drama-heavy midseason schedule.”

Key & Peele’s Director, Peter Atencio, Has Just Wrapped His Last Day on Key & Peele

Many of you or, we’re willing to wager, all of you reading this right now probably have become big fans of the show Key & Peele on Comedy Central over their four seasons throughout the last couple of years.

As such, you’re more than acquainted with the shows titular stars Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele, but you should also be familiar with and tip your hat to the show’s director Peter Atencio, who, atypical of almost every TV show in existence, directed every episode of Key & Peele.

Well, last night, Peter Atencio himself announced it was his final day on Key & Peele, which he has left his mark on indelibly. We have yet to hear what Atencio’s next projects are or who will step in for him in the future, but, for now, just go watch a bunch of Key & Peele sketches and appreciate his work.
