This W. Kamau Bell Bit Shows Why You Need to Educate Yourself on Racism

In the spirit of amplifying the voices that should be amplified today, we’re pointing to you to this bit by the fantastic comedian W. Kamau Bell from one of his past hours, Semi-Prominent Negro. You should watch/enjoy/learn from all of Kamau’s work (United Shades of America, Private School Negro), but this particular joke highlights the importance of people, particularly non-black people, on doing their homework and educating themselves on racism/anti-racism/white supremacy rather than depending on asking black people to do it for them. There is so much to know and there are so many resources.

Please watch it here. You can (and should) also listen to Semi-Prominent Negro in full on Spotify here.

With their being almost seemingly an infinite amount of television, it’s completely reasonable that you might miss one stand-up special on a subscription based premium cable network.

That being said, we hope you did indeed watch W. Kamau Bell: Semi-Prominent Negro a few months back when it aired on Showtime for the whip-smart, jolly dissection of current issues including race, gender fluidity, gentrification, and hair.

You can now (and really should) get it as an album from Kill Rock Stars or iTunes or Bandcamp or Amazon.

10PM on Showtime.

Last week, W. Kamau Bell had the premiere of his CNN series, United Shades of America. This week, Bell continues his big return to TV with a brand new hour stand-up special on Showtime called Semi-Prominent Negro.

At least this week, he’ll be in the safety of a theater as opposed to hanging with KKK without a total idea of what might happen.

Clear out 10PM on both April 24th and April 29th.

Next week will be a big one for W. Kamau Bell as his brand new exploratory series of discriminatory subcultures, United Shades of America, and a brand new Morgan Spurlock directed comedy special, Semi-Prominent Negro, are both premiering.

More specifically…

United Shades of America will premiere on CNN on Sunday, April 24th at 10PM
Semi-Prominent Negro will premiere on Showtime on Friday, April 29th at 10PM

Bell’s last series, Totally Biased on FX/FXx, came to an end far too early (especially with the popularity of shows like Full Frontal and Last Week Tonight) and both his new show and special should be well worth catching.

You can hear Bell chat about both with Trevor Noah from last week’s Daily Show here.
