The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 238: Sam Varela & El Paso Silverlake Ramen Comedy

October 23, 2024
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
sam varela

On the week of The Comedy Bureau’s 14th Anniversary, we’re so very glad to have our dear friend and fellow comedy behind-the-scenes compatriot Sam Varela (Naked Comedy) joining us in on getting to the nitty gritty of the state of comedy (as well as discussing what’s going in Texas where Sam is taking some time away from being on the coasts). As always, it was a deep, insightful on where the winds are blowing these days in comedy between generations/classes/schisms/etc.

Also, yes, there’s a Silverlake Ramen opening in El Paso.

Intrepid indie comedy producers, Sam Varela, returns to TCB Field Report to talk the state of comedy with TCB’s Jake Kroeger at this juncture of (still) early 2024. Varela produces shows in both LA and NYC (including the amazing Picture This) as well as live-streams that are genuinely worth watching and definitely is one of the perfect people to weigh in on where the art form/community/scenes of comedy are right now and where they’re headed going forward.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 92: Sam Varela & 2022 Electric COVID-loo

December 29, 2021
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
covid protocol, don't look up, joe rogan, licorice pizza, sam varela, vaccine mandates, virtual comedy

As 2022 approaches, there’s a lot on the horizon, despite everything in live performance going dark for a few weeks at least, if not several. Thankfully, Sam Varela, one of the best people in comedy, joins again to not only break down the situation that the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has brought to comedy, but highlight the ongoing importance of her virtual stand-up show, Self-Care Comedy, that has been going weekly for almost a year and still has strong regular audience as well as that there is no going back to any sort of element of 2019 ever again. For whatever we have to look forward to in 2022 with the pandemic still well in place, Sam and TCB’s Jake Kroeger attempt to see what’s ahead (and talk a lot about Adam McKay’s brilliant Don’t Look Up in the process).

Also, hot takes on the boycott of Licorice Pizza, Joe Rogan postponing a 4/20 show because he doesn’t want to obey any vaccine mandates, and more (including world politics and astrophysics even though this is a comedy podcast).

Follow Sam @naked_comedy on Twitter & @nakedcomedy on IG and please get tickets to Ever’s The Tops! top surgery fundraiser on 1/7 @ The Elysian. Stay tuned to Self-Care Comedy every Tuesday at 7PM PT/10PM ET here.

Pick of the Day: Final Week of Comedy Quarantine

December 7, 2020
News
babs gray, comedy livestream, comedy quarantine, comedy show, dominque gelin, ig live, instagram live, sam varela, teresa lee

Comedy Quarantine has been dutifully and faithfully delivering stand-up comedy via Instagram Live (in a pretty slick way, we might add) for almost every week of lockdown/quarantine/this damn pandemic. The team of Barbara Gray, Teresa Lee, Dominque Gelin, and Sam Varela have connected the best comedians from around the country and the world to stay connected to everyone else and work on material within their own home or wherever they happen to be at the time (Teresa went live from a protest in DTLA) longer than any other comedy live-stream that we have known about this year.

On top of that, they have been taking donations to not only support the comedians on their line-up, but have raised plenty of $$$ for great organizations such as Ground Game LA or The Okra Project.

So, this week will be their last week and, as they have done throughout the duration of the pandemic, they’ve got stacked line-ups that are very, very much tuning into on IG Live for (as you can see above).

If you weren’t already checking them out, please check @ComedyQuarantine out for their final shows this Wed., Thurs., and Fri. at 7PM PT/10PM ET.
