Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote Was Worth the Wait

You can go down a very long, circuitous (perhaps quixotic) rabbit hole in finding the story behind how Terry Gilliam finally finished latest work The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. So, we’re just going let you go down there on your own and focus on telling you how we enjoyed the film itself.

Just as that story fascinating on its own, the actual movie itself stands as a grand offering of Terry Gilliam’s vast, vast imagination. The idea of even adapting the original book of Don Quixote into a movie or TV series is pretty challenging. Yet, Gilliam dived further thematically by following a commercial director who becomes his art in living Quixote while trying to make a Quixote-themed commercial. That’s a bit cryptic of a premise, but describing the wild nature of the movie can get a bit complicated and just trust that Gilliam, for our money, pulls off the many narratives and layers he attempted here (on top of being visually spectacular as is usually the case with a Gilliam film).

For all the grand absurdities that Gilliam has presented in his films over the years, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote stands out as one where the nonsense (mostly) makes sense and is enjoyable to get lost in.

Terry Gilliam’s ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote’ Will Get a Theatrical Run After All

Last week, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote had a one night only, Fathom Events style screening across the country. We weren’t sure how else Terry Gilliam’s long, long, long awaited Quixote movie would be seen, but come this Friday, it’ll be in limited release and VOD too.

If we had to guess, it met some number from the one night only event that guaranteed this limited release rollout. Hopefully, that bodes well for its reception. We shall see this weekend.

OK, Finally, Here’s a Trailer for Terry Gilliam’s Man Who Killed Don Quixote

It’s almost too fitting that Terry Gilliam’s journey to make a movie centered around Don Quixote has been long and circuitous, even quixotic perhaps.

Yet, despite the numerous set backs, issues with funding, etc. etc., it seems that we will indeed get to see The Man Who Killed Don Quixote after all. From the trailer, this has potential to be a bit of fun especially with Adam Driver and Jonathan Pryce’s dynamic as a man thinking he’s Don Quixote and a man playing along and being his Sancho.

In fact, if you allow us this very specific comparison, a Don Quixote version of Andy Sandford’s Who’s On First joke.

If you’re into it, mark your calendars for April 10th as there is some sort of one night only cinematic event for the film.
