Please Enjoy the Wryest Sing-al ‘A Million Matzah Balls’ Sing-along from “Lemon”

We really loved Janicza Bravo and Brett Gelman’s dark comedy, Lemon.

There are several reasons why we love it.

One of them is this scene of what’s supposed to be a traditional Jewish family sing-along that’s gone, albeit subtly, wrong (just watch Gelman juxtaposed against other family members trying to “keep it together” at a family dinner).

Watch and enjoy the scene over at Vulture here and go see Lemon ASAP/again.

Brett Gelman Shines Bright as the Off Putting Weirdo at the Center of Janicza Bravo and Gelman’s “Lemon”

Brett Gelman has a knack for playing roles that are challenging, unsettling, and down right strange. In fact, we’d say he thrives in such a space.

Whether it be on TV, in film, or live on stage, Brett uses a commanding presence to carefully oscillate between being disturbing and downright hysterical.

With this in mind, co-writer/director Janicza Bravo penned Lemon with Gelman and expertly captured the essence of a person that could be described as a “lemon” (like one would describe a useless heap of a car). The two pulled off making a comedy of discomfort that delicately balances between following an antagonistic protagonist, having everything go wrong, and keep it all enthralling.

Also, supporting cast members Michael Cera, Judy Greer, Shiri Appleby, Gillian Jacobs, Martin Starr, Megan Mullally, Jon Daly and Nia Long up the weirdness in Lemon with their own very memorable, outlandish characters.

Right now, you can watch Lemon at The Nuart in West LA or you can rent on Amazon.

If you’ve been missing Brett Gelman since he left Adult Swim, fret not.

He and Janicza Bravo have created Lemon, a dark indie comedy that dazzled while playing the film festival circuit, and will be coming to the rest of us next month.

The trailer itself is pretty satisfying with enticing appearances by Megan Mullally, Judy Greer, Michael Cera, Nia Long, Gillian Jacobs, and Fred Melamed to name a few.

See for yourself here.

Look for Lemon in theaters, On Demand, on Amazon Video and iTunes on Friday, August 18th.
