iHeartPodcast Network Talent/Staffers Unionize at WGA East

December 10, 2021
News
iheartpodcast, iheartradio, union, wga

(via Deadline)

For those continuing to wonder where the world is with podcasts and its burgeoning popularity, unionizing is a pretty good barometer for the size and scope of where the medium is. There has to be enough business, infrastructure, and, of course, people involved to justify a union for collective bargaining on behalf of employees whose demands might be otherwise overlooked or ignored.

Thus, it’s kind of a thrilling announcement that iHeartPodcast Network talent including hosts, producers, and writers are signed on with WGA East in order to guarantee basic benefits and working conditions. That’s such a big step considering that the world of podcasting has been a wild west since its inception despite exponential growth in both popularity and profits in the last decade or so. Under the iHeartPodcast Network umbrella are The Nikki Glaser Podcast, How Did We Get Weird? with Vanessa and Jonah Bayer, Life Will Be the Death of Me with Chelsea Handler, Las Culturistas with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang, a number of Jamie Loftus audio projects/shows, and Will Ferrell‘s own imprint, Big Money Players.

The idea of any sort of comedy being part of a union feels like a fever dream. So many of the career paths in comedy are so solitary, nebulous, and circuitous that any sort of organizing on the part of talent is nothing short of a miracle. The idea of being a part of a podcast union, especially one that represents a handful of some of the most popular comedy podcasts, is astonishing, yet, thankfully where we have arrived.

We’ll see if this has a ripple effect across the podcasting spectrum (and maybe even, dare we say, comedy itself like folks have tried and failed in decades past).

IHeartRadio Is Looking, Once Again, for The Next Great Podcast

August 26, 2021
News
iheartmedia, iheartpodcast, iheartradio, open submissions, the next great podcast

If you’re one of the many, many people that started a podcast, comedy or otherwise, during lockdown or, at the very least, were someone who really fleshed out what you wanted to do with a podcast rather than just thinking about it in passing, you have a pretty great opportunity coming your way thanks to iHeartRadio and Tongal.

Just like they did last year with The Next Great Podcast, they’re taking pitches for such a podcast from now until Sept. 17th. One show from however many submissions they get will be rewarded with being developed into a full fledged show on the iHeartPodcast network.

Here are the specific details:

  • You can pitch us your podcast here through noon PT on September 17, 2021.
  • Pitches will be evaluated by a panel of podcast luminaries, led by head judge Dan Patrick.
  • 10 semi-finalists will each receive $1,000 to produce a 10-minute pilot and fans all over the globe will vote for their favorite.
  • ONE show will be named The Next Great Podcast 2021, and its Creator will be interviewed by legendary broadcaster Dan Patrick and work closely with iHeartRadio to develop their series for The iHeartPodcast Network.

Hear a little more and get to pitching here.

Andrew Max Levy is one of the LA comedy scene’s favorite comedy photographers. He has been covering the beat for local LA shows for some time now and has even shot outdoor shows during the pandemic (when it was safe to do so and if shows were taking enough precaution/enacting enough protocol). TCB’s Jake Kroeger zooms with Andrew and gets into what he’s seen on the front lines of live, in-person comedy during COVID-19 (and why he’s stopped for now). They also get into Levy’s fervent devotion to Twitch as an angle for comedians and comedy folks to build a following and make a little money. Lastly, there’s “hot” takes on IHeartRadio’s Podcast Awards nominees, the still impending comeback of Vidiots (via Variety), and Natalie Palamides’ NATE.
