What Makes for Comedy and Drama for The Golden Globes Has Just Been Changed

Looks like the HFPA read all your tweets about The Martian winning a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.

“Motion pictures shall be entered in the category that best matches the overall tone and content of the motion Thus, for example, dramas with comedic overtones should be entered as dramas,” is the new explanation for how nominees will be sorted in the next Golden Globes by The Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The clarification (or expansion of discretion by HFPA) is welcome as comedy in film has hard enough of a time get noticed during awards season. Most of the time, comedies have to have a considerable percentage of dramatic elements to even peak the interest of those in charge of nominating and voting for various awards.

Just try and remember what was the last pure comedy to be an awards powerhouse. Outside of Grand Budapest Hotel, which might still be a stretch as full-fledged comedy, there hasn’t been much.

Still, the grouping of comedy with musicals strangely remains at The Golden Globes. Perhaps, the resurgence of musicals might lead to their own category, which would be more than deserved.
