All Hail Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Fleabag with Their Emmy Wins

The outstanding second season of Fleabag got its proper due as it nabbed the Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Directing for a Comedy Series, and Writing for a Comedy Series (three of which went to the very deserving series creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge).

This should make up for the lack of awards for Fleabag’s also brilliant first season and really make Waller-Bridge shine in real life as much as her character does in the saintly key art for season 2.

Also, what’s interesting to note from last night’s Emmys is that The Marvelous Ms. Maisel’s Alex Borstein and Tony Shaloub won Outstanding Supporting Actress and Actor. That’s quite a sweep for Amazon in the comedy field (made all the more impressive by the fact that we did wonder a couple years ago what was going to happen with their comedy branding after Transparent had to reconfigure after the #MeToo exit of Jeffrey Tambor).

Here are the rest of the comedy winners from 2019 Emmys:

2019 Creative Arts Emmy Awards Comedy Winners

As you might be aware, there is a gigantic list of categories for The Emmys, which has made the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences split up the ceremony into two separate weekends, the first of which is deemed the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. That covers the technical and smaller categories including short form, cinematography, and production design.

This year, Hannah Gadsby rightfully garners an Emmy for her writing on Nanette, Russian Doll and Marvelous Ms. Maisel nabbed many technical awards for their beautifully imagined universes, Fleabag was honored for its spot on casting, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend appropriately got honors for original music and choreography, The Simpsons still has staying power after all these years, and James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke has won the hearts and minds of America.

Also, Megan Amram is still without an Emmy for her An Emmy for Megan web series, which is a huge snub. Also, perhaps, it might be a way to force her to renew her own digital short form series, but she needs to, when all is said and done, win one for her genius satire that points an absurdist mirror at the entertainment biz.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Dominates Comedy Categories at This Years Emmys

Taking home the Emmy statues last night for outstanding writing, directing, lead actress, and supporting actress is a pretty damn good sweep for Amy Sherman-Palladino’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The performances by Bill Hader and Henry Winkler took home two trophies for Barry making for an impressive win for the show’s first season.

Also, Mulaney’s special delivered on high expectations of being pretty damn good, so we’re glad to see that Kid Gorgeous won.

All in all, most expectations were fulfilled in the comedy categories as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has been really growing in buzz for the last several months.

The 77th Peabody Awards, one of the more prestigious awards to be bestowed in media, just named a few of their winners ahead of the ceremony on May 19th in NYC with host Hasan Minhaj.

As far as comedy is concerned, several comedy series scored a Peabody including:
American Vandal
Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King
Insecure
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
SNL: Political Satire 2017
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

On top of that, living and still working comedy legend Carol Burnett will be honored individually with a Peabody Career Achievement Award.

It should be noted that comedy pretty much dominated the entertainment category for the Peabodys this year, probably more so than in any other year in recent memory.
