Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat‘s biting satire of the arthouse cinema world, Official Competition, is very close to arriving to wherever you want to see it. There will be a limited theatrical release on Jun. 17th and then VOD on Aug. 2nd.

With the impending release dates, a brand new trailer, that’s even more mischievously fun than the first one. Penelope Cruz plays an ambitiously arthouse director that pits a similarly respected actor played by Oscar Martínez with a wildly popular, blockbuster actor played by real life superstar Antonio Banderas. The colliding egos make for something that might be this year’s version of The Square. Oh yeah, the celebrated and decorated Penelope Cruz does a pretty good floss as well, in case that what’s you needed to sell you on seeing Official Competition.

See all this for yourself here.

Get Your First Look at Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas in an Arthouse Comedy “Official Competition”

It’s not often that internationally acclaimed movie starts Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas star in a high brow comedy that is satirically poking at cinema/high art itself.

Yet, Official Competition from enlists both Banderas and Cruz to play up the pretense of auteurs and their various collaborators and just how ridiculous it can get. From the teaser, we’re getting a strong reminder of The Square from Ruben Östlund and how devilishly it dissected the contemporary/modern art world.

For now, we only get a small taste of  what co-directors and co-writers Gastón Duprat & Mariano Cohn, along with co-writer Andrés Duprat, have cooked up, but after just a minute, we’re pretty much on board.

There’s no official release date, much less a release date for just North America, but we imagine that it’ll likely find its way on some sort of streaming service, if all else fails, before the end of the year.
