Black Horror Movie Tropes Will Be Joyfully Picked Apart with “The Blackening”

Even with Get Out showing the world at large that there is so much to be explored in horror from a Black perspective, there are still plenty of Black stereotypes well-baked into the genre that need to be dug up and chucked out.

With that in mind, writers DeWayne Perkins and Tracy Oliver along with director Tim Story are doing just that with their upcoming horror comedy, The Blackening. Taking the framework of the Saw franchise, seven friends have to play a twisted killer’s game in order to survive, but they, as Black folks who all know too well what happens to Black characters in so many horror movies, will take a bit of a different approach to seeing the light of day and making it out alive. From the trailer, there seems to be plenty of mischievous meta horror fun especially with a tag line like “WE ALL CAN’T DIE FIRST”.

Also, the cast boasts such marvelous comic talents of Jermaine Fowler, DeWayne Perkins, Yvonne Orji, Jay Pharoah, and Grace Byers.

It feels as though this movie should have been made a long time ago, but, we’re thankful that it’s going to come out at theaters everywhere this Summer on Jun. 16th. In the meantime, enjoy the trailer for The Blackening over and over here.
