Not only is one of our favorite movies from both 2015 (The Lobster) and 2018 (The Favourite) playing side-by-side and the darkly comedic genius behind them (Yorgos Lanthimos) will be in person to discuss them, but it’s a free event with RSVP (Note: link for RSVP to general public has yet to be posted).

It’s probably worth checking obsessively for when you can RSVP/perhaps signing up for an American Cinematheque membership.

Don’t Think Twice, The Lobster, Hail, Caesar! Get Critics Choice Awards Nominations

The Critics Choice Awards are definitely a departure from many awards show trends, especially with a wider swathe of genre categories. For this year, when it comes to comedy, the films nominated are all over the place (Deadpool, Central Intelligence and the Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar! are all nominated together), but some true gems that might not get recognized for other awards get some recognition here amidst all the noise from buzzworthy dramas like Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea.

Perhaps it would have been perfect if it was released on Valentine’s Day, but we’re just glad that it’s getting a U.S. release soon.

The Lobster has Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz in a dystopian future where he has to find a significant other within a small amount of time or he’ll turn into an animal, albeit, one of his choosing.

If that doesn’t already have you at least intrigued, here’s the trailer.

The idea of love in dystopian society has been pondered now and again in the arts, but rarely has it gone as Kafka-esque from the get go as The Lobster where if you don’t fall in love, you’ll turn into an animal.

Director and co-writer Yorgos Lanthimos and co-writer Efthymis Filippou have made what looks to be, from this trailer, a sheer delight starring Colin Farrell and featuring Rachel Weisz, John C. Reilly, Ben Whishaw, Lea Seydoux, and more.

The Lobster opens its theatrical release in the UK on Oct. 16th and will hopefully its way across the pond soon after.

Though Cannes Film Festival is more synonymous with very timely and hard hitting dramas, high concept, socially conscious, and/or foreign comedies do have a place there.

At Cannes, Distributor Alchemy has bought up the U.S. rights to The Lobster, a dystopian futuristic romantic comedy where it’s illegal to be single, starring Colin Farrell, and Italian dramedy Mia Madre co-starring John Turturro.

IFC Films has acquired the U.S. rights to international war comedy “A Perfect Day” which includes the cast of Benicio Del Toro, Tim Robbins, Olga Kurylenko, and more.

Having the stamp of approval of premiering at Cannes, we hope to see all these films theatrically released in the States soon.
