The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 28: Jamel Johnson & The LA Outdoors

October 7, 2020
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
jamel johnson, outdoor comedy, second city, snl

Jamel Johnson was one of the first comedians to record a special in all of quarantine during this COVID-19 pandemic with the audience-less Friend or Foe. He’s also done a remote segment on Conan, kept up a basketball podcast going during the NBA Playoffs, and managed to do some of LA’s newly minted outdoor shows, which means he has maintained himself working as much as he can and being so damn funny while doing so. Jamel zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger to discuss all such things as well as SNL managing to have a live audience, Second City being on sale, things to think about in doing in-person shows during a pandemic and more.

Follow Jamel on IG @broccolihouse & Twitter @nonprofitcomic and listen to his podcasts Air Buds and Sorry We Love Football. Get and watch his special, Friend or Foe.

Shout outs: Michelle Buteau’s Buteaupia. Chinedu Unaka’s Mostly Kidding, and Josiah Johnson

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 24: Steve Hernandez & Calculated Risks

September 9, 2020
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
chatterbox, comedy news, comedy podcast, ellen, i'm thinking of ending things, jake kroeger, maria bamford, snl, steve hernandez, ted alexandro

Before lockdown, one of LA’s best comedy shows, sometimes described as one of the best indie comedy shows in the entire country happened on Sunday Nights at The Chatterbox in Covina. Steve Hernandez not only built the show from the ground up over several years, but has also grown his own personal podcast empire in co-hosting Views From the Vista, The Male Gaze, and Who’s Your God? (as well as an upcoming fourth podcast that he reveals on the pod). Steve zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger to talk on how Steve meticulously has adjusted and planned for the survival of all those things and what may or may not come for live comedy in LA in the coming months and years. Also, there’s some “hot” takes on SNL promoting Ego Nwodim to repertory player and Ellen DeGeneres setting a return date for her show and promising that “we’re gonna talk about it.”

In the midst of all of that, Jake gets into his hang-ups with the new Charlie Kaufman movie I’m Thinking of Ending Things even though he hasn’t seen it yet.

Follow Steve @hernia on IG and @bighern on Twitter.  Listen/subscribe to Views From the Vista, The Male Gaze, and Who’s Your God?

Shout outs: Maria Bamford’s You Are (a Comedy) Special, Ted Alexandro’s CUT/UP

Here are the Comedy Nominees for 72nd Primetime Emmys

July 28, 2020
News
a black lady sketch show, comedy nominees, emmys, insecure, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, marvelous mrs maisel, nicole byer, nominations, primetime emmys, ramy, robot chicken, schitts creek, snl, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, what we do in the shadows

For the 72nd Primetime Emmys, many of the perennial favorites got their nominations like Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, SNL, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Dave Chappelle Schitt’s Creek, Hannah Gadsby in the categories they perennially occupy.

However, there are a few pleasant surprises (there always a few) in this year’s Emmys nominations including A Black Lady Sketch Show, Ramy, Robot Chicken, What We Do in the Shadows, Nicole Byer as host of Nailed It!, and FX’s Cake. What We Do In The Shadows and Insecure actually very much earned their spots in the Outstanding Comedy Series category as they have probably been the two most beloved current/new comedies during the entire pandemic.

Voting will run through the end of next month and the winners will be announced on Sept. 20th by Jimmy Kimmel. We’re going to guess that will be not the normal Emmys telecast chock full of celebrities dressed to the nines.

Take a gander at all the comedy nominees below. Get a full list of all the nominees for the 72nd Primetime Emmys here via Deadline.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report welcomes its first director (of TV/film/documentary) Steven Feinartz who has helmed truly great stand-up specials and documentaries including Eddie Pepitone’s For The Masses and The Bitter Buddha. Steven zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger about the persisting lockdown affecting production and how he might approach shooting stand-up/comedy right at this moment. Also, they get into on comedy festivals going virtual, SNL’s possible return to studio 8H, LA’s The Satellite turning into a restaurant to survive, and a robust discussion about cancel culture and where it is now.

SNL Planning Possible Return to Shooting in Studio This Fall

July 20, 2020
News
Saturday Night Live, snl

(via Variety)

Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon have already returned to some sort of stage to do their respective late night shows, which has Lorne Michaels seemingly antsy to have SNL return to Studio 8H. Also, at this point in time, NYC’s reopening seems to be go somewhat smoothly, compared to many botched reopenings across the country at the very least. What lies ahead has yet to be seen, especially since a COVID-19 vaccine isn’t available yet.

Still, rather than doing the entirely remote produced episodes of Saturday Night Live at the end of their last season, Michaels is aiming to have season 46 get closer to where they were before the pandemic took hold in America. To do this, it’s likely, similar to many TV shows that had a live audience, that no one will be sitting in the crowd to watch it live and the crew will have to be small for effective social distancing and be masked. We wouldn’t be surprised to see if this translates to more pre-taped segments versus live sketches that you’d very likely only hear crew members potentially laughing in the background.

All of these plans are merely in a hypothetical stage and nothing is set in stone and will very likely be affected based on how COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and the progress of a vaccine is coming along. That being said, if they pull off producing episodes live, it’s very likely that they will be a template themselves for other live TV shows/sketch series to attempt something with enough (or hopefully more than enough) safety measures and protocol.

Julio Torres Reveals a Rejected Sketch and One of His Oddest Moments at SNL

Julio Torres is on his own comedic wavelength (ex. My Favorite Shapes, Los Espookys) and not easing up for anyone, which makes him all the more wonderful.

This clip from his most recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers is further proof of his otherworldly charm wherein he shares a sketch that he never got to make at SNL and how he freaked out one of the interns. Please enjoy here.

This Saturday, Kumail Nanjiani Will Be Hosting SNL

Having seen Kumail work out his monologue, it might be worth your time to tune in this Saturday (or watch it the next day on YouTube).

Maybe SNL will have a more Portlandia/Silicon Valley/Big Sick/The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail vibe to it this week?

Oh yeah, here’s the first promo with Kumail!

SNL Adds Heidi Gardner, Luke Null, and Chris Redd as Featured Players and Sam Jay, Gary Richardson, Erik Marino, Andrew Dismukes, Steven Castillo, Claire Friedman and Nimesh Patel as Writers

There’s plenty of talent to be excited about here. For us, we’re specifically jazzed about Sam Jay, Chris Redd, Gary Richardson, and Steven Castillo as we have personally got to delight in their comedic stylings up close.

They, of course, add more diversity to SNL, but, if given a chance, can really bring some attitude and tomfoolery both to the show in season 43. We’ll just have to wait, cross our fingers, and see if that happens.

This news paired with Kumail Nanjiani hosting an episode this season does indeed have our hopes up a little.

Comedy/Variety Special-Trumph: The Primary Election Special 2016
Animation-BoJack Horseman

Last Week Tonight, BoJack Horseman, and, with a renewed jolt from the election and Trump Administration, SNL winning WGA Awards seem to be expected.

However, Atlanta nabbing both honors for both Comedy Series and New Series is a really nice, big win for Donald Glover’s freshman series as well as FX, the rare basic cable network that can run with premium cable networks and streaming services when it comes to prestige programming.

FYI, their show The Americans won an award for Drama too.

BEST TALK SHOW

The Late Late Show with James Corden *WINNER*
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Host TJ Miller both co-starred Deadpool and is part of the ensemble cast of Silicon Valley, which both took home Critics Choice Awards last night. This might make TJ the biggest winner of the evening.

The Late Late Show with James Corden also continues its ascent in late night by winning over all the satirical news shows and Fallon, which is pretty astounding considering that Fallon is still a ratings leader and Sam Bee, John Oliver, and Trevor Noah got special focus because of the election.

The election also put special focus on SNL with highlighting both Kate McKinnon and Alec Baldwin in their respective impressions of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump and resulted in their Critics Choice wins.

Meryl Streep continues her dominance with awards in general as she indeed play a historically bad singer perfectly in Florence Foster Jenkins.

Don’t forget that FX has a nice showing here as well with wins for Louie Anderson on Baskets and Donald Glover on Atlanta. It’s further proof that FX’s programming line-up can stand with the premium cable and streaming networks.

Also, we’re glad to see BoJack Horseman taking home Best Animated Series as the show continues to evolve and get more emotionally and satisfyingly complex.

This Dave Chappelle Monologue and Sketch with Chappelle’s Show Characters Almost Makes for a Whole Episode of Chappelle’s Show

November 13, 2016

If you just watch this Walking Dead parody with popular Chappelle’s Show characters and the opening monologue with Dave Chappelle doing stand-up, you’re only a few minutes short of a full episode of Chapelle’s Show.

This doesn’t make up for having Trump on, but seeing Chappelle back in old form is still pretty great.

So Far, This SNL Promo Shows That Dave Chappelle Will Show Up on Saturday

Uncategorized
dave chappelle, promo, Saturday Night Live, snl

This is Dave Chappelle’s most prominent TV appearance, especially given the weight of comedian hosts on Saturday Night Live, since, well, you know, Chappelle’s Show went off the air the way that it did.

Knowing that, here’s the promo that “makes it seem” like Dave will be there.

If you take into account people’s focus on SNL in this election year, the election results, Chappelle’s relative absence on TV, A Tribe Called Quest being the musical guest, it might be an important episode of SNL to watch.

Dave Chappelle to Host SNL on November 12th

Uncategorized
a tribe called quest, chappelle's show, dave chappelle, Saturday Night Live, snl

This will probably be the closest we’ll get to a new episode of Chappelle’s Show.

As a relief from the election being over next week perhaps, SNL has landed Dave Chappelle as a host for November 12th with guest A Tribe Called Quest.

This means that Chappelle will probably do some stand-up in the opening host monologue and undoubtedly have a hand in the sketches. This is kind of huge since Dave hasn’t really been as prominently featured on TV like this in over a decade.

SNL Nails Double Standard Between Men and Women’s Clothes These Days

Though not as highlighted as other issues of inequality between men and women like equal pay and sexual harassment, there is definitely a bone to pick with how clothes are made and sold to men and women.

Last night’s Saturday Night Live made a fake ad that perfectly summed up that double standard.

Watch it here.

For the most part, heavy perennial favorites won here, and deservingly so, like Veep, Transparent, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Key & Peele got a proper send-off for the final season with this Emmy win and what might be talked about as one of Louie Anderson’s best performances of his career in Baskets as the mother nabbed him a statue as well. Also, Master of None’s writing definitely earned its Emmy win here.

Take note of the power of premium cable and streaming services, particularly HBO and Amazon, in this round of winners.

‘SNL’ Hires Seven New Writers for Season 42

Zack Bornstein, Anna Drezen, BriTANick (Brian McElhaney and Nick Kocher), Joanna Bradley, Julio Torres, and Kristen Bartlett will be the seven new writers for season 42 of SNL.

With this new row of writers, we hope, based on their previous works including Reductress and any Britanick sketch that SNL gets weirder and more feminist.

SNL Adds Melissa Villasenor, Alex Moffat, and Mikey Day as Featured Players

Melissa Villasenor being on SNL has been a long time coming as far as we’re concerned.

This marks the newest additions to the Saturday Night Live cast before this upcoming 42nd season. With Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah out, you might wonder if more current cast members might be let go and new ones brought in. As the season premiere is less than a month away, we’ll all find out soon.

SNL Vets Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah Not Returning for Season 42

Each had six seasons of Saturday Night Live under their belt and are now free to explore other projects like Killam was already doing with a movie he was directing.

We’re guessing that Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah might take a slightly different route post-SNL given their specific comedic skill sets as compared to recent SNL alums like Kristen Wii and, Fred Armisen. That being said, we can see Killam follow the model of Jason Sudeikis’ very successful film and TV career that now spans comedy and drama given that filled a very similar role on Saturday Night Live.
