At 8PM tonight, the evening that David Letterman was honored with one of comedy’s most prestigious awards, The Mark Twain Prize for Humor, will be televised in a special on PBS.

There were plenty of presenters that came out to honor Dave including Steve Martin, Martin Short, Jimmy Kimmel, Amy Schumer, and Bill Murray (of course, Murray is in a ridiculous get up per his tradition with his appearances on The Late Show).

Also, Bill Hader and Fred Armisen did this special edition of Documentary Now! just for Dave.

9PM on PBS.

While Eddie Murphy has already received his actual Mark Twain Prize for Humor at the ceremony, the rest of us only know that he ribbed Bill Cosby during his acceptance speech.

We don’t know what Kevin Nealon Jay Pharoah, and more were up to during the ceremony, but it seems like they were there honoring Eddie in their own particular way.

We’ll definitely be curious to see if Eddie’s acceptance speech goes a little more into some bits/material/etc.

Open mics are an unavoidable part of being a comedian. They’re often brutal and, in fact, you shouldn’t think of them any other way, but they are also crucial to developing your voice as a comedian so when you do a big show, you don’t fuck it up (hopefully).

Scott Moran’s amazing series Modern Comedian for PBS Digital follows up and coming comedian Subhah Agarwal who grinds it out at open mics in NYC as much as humanly possible and exhibits how hard work and focus can be quite rewarding in comedy. Watch the episode here.

Opting for his own artistic freedom, veteran comedian James Heneghen has made due in comedy by performing on the road. It’s a little thought about lifestyle, especially with people that don’t perform on a regular basis, trying to find work constantly, driving so much that your car is effectively your home, and so on.

This latest episode of Scott Moran’s Modern Comedian gives a pretty good sense of all of that.
