The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 16: Nore Davis & Change for The Better

July 15, 2020
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
nore davis

This week, the ray of sunshine that is Nore Davis gets into the nitty gritty of his brand new comedy album, Live From The Comedy Trap House, that was conceptualized, rehearsed, recorded, produced, and distributed all in quarantine. Despite the protestations of several comedians on the prospect of doing comedy on Zoom, Davis really made it work for this album and he shares every bit of detail that went into making it with TCB’s Jake Kroeger. On top of that, Davis’ positivity, both in general and the way the world is changing because of the cultural uprising is sincerely refreshing on this episode.

The cast members of Ramy that they’re both trying to remember are Dave Meherje and Mo Amer.

This week, TCB’s Jake Kroeger zooms with the beloved comedy and art world hybrid Christina Catherine Martinez. Even without a pandemic, Martinez has managed to imbue her comedy with her professional art critic sensibilities to create marvelously absurdist, subversive, high brow, yet incredibly silly bits, stand-up, and characters. Her and Jake discuss what her detailed plans for translating her conceptual comedy to live-streaming platforms like Zoom on IG Live, the extension of her Aesthetical Relations brand/universe (even revealing plans for a special), and an attempt at a quick rundown of Groundlings’ controversy, MTV animated series revivals, and Comedy Central’s order of two new John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch specials.

Also, here’s John Cage’s 4:33 to get that John Cage joke at the end.

Follow Christina at @xtina_catherine on Twitter and IG and visit christinacatherine.info to delve into all things Christina Catherine Martinez. Get the e-book version of Aesthetical Relations here.

Nore Davis’ Live From The Comedy Trap House, One of the First Comedy Albums Made Over Zoom, Out Today

July 3, 2020
News
blonde medicine, nore davis

Nore Davis has consistently been upbeat, joyful, and hopeful in his stand-up in every one of his hours that he’s released over the years. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Davis, like many other comedians has done his best to keep his craft sharp, express himself, and get laughs over Zoom, the video conferencing platform that a good majority of comedians had no idea about until the latter part of March.

Davis opted to headline on his own from from the get go at “The Comedy Trap House” for a few weeks with a live Zoom audience, so there would be laughs to had (in contrast to the plethora of live-stream shows with comedians performing to silence while a virtual audience enjoys it on the other end). From that, Nore opted to put out a brand new album via Zoom.

Thus, Live From The Comedy Trap House was born with Nore speaking from the heart with his signature warmth about COVID-19, the murder of George Floyd/Black Lives Matter, and even a break-up he went through while in lockdown. In fact, this was only recorded days after George Floyd’s life was stolen, which gives you Nore’s perspective at its freshest and most raw. You very rarely get that in a comedy record, but then again, this is a special album.

The hour is somewhat surreal as you can almost sense that the laughter from the audience and Nore are disembodied voices, but they still managed to be connected and laugh and giggle throughout the whole album. Davis’ hope and joy are still clearly intact, which is amazing considering how deeply traumatic every single day has been over the last several months. Live From The Comedy Trap House is and will be a fascinating document of this historical moment both because of how it was created entirely over Zoom and will likely be the most “virtual sounding” comedy album and for it speaking to everything that’s happening in the world that other future generations might be in disbelief about whenever we talk about it.

So, go listen and enjoy and take in Live From The Comedy Trap House, a comedy album that is very well historic on its own. Fresh from Blonde Medicine, it’s streaming at all the places you get your comedy albums.

Pick of the Day: “Nore Davis: Live from The Comedy Trap House” ALBUM RECORDING

May 27, 2020
News
album recording, live stream standup, nore davis, stand up

Several weeks of quarantine and lockdown have passed and, with every passing week, comedy that has been done via live-stream has gotten better and tighter. Some forward thinking comedians have taken all this time, especially with the prospect of live stand-up comedy returning in full force still being unsure, to do full sets/headline over Zoom.

One such comedian is Nore Davis. Davis has done plenty of “stage time” with his Live from The Comedy Trap House series on Zoom and is now opting to make a big leap and record a comedy album while on Zoom, which very well may be the first comedy album to be recorded on Zoom while in quarantine. On top of that, Davis’ upbeat persona and succinct observations are something that we have loved since we heard his first album, Home Game, a few years ago.

If you want to take part in comedy history, there will be two shows for Nore on Fri. May 29th at 4PM PT/7PM ET and 6PM/9PM ET. Admission is free, but you will need to RSVP for the Zoom link. Get details, reserve free tickets here.

There is a certain, great innocence that Nore Davis has a knack for preserving with his hysterical insights into the troubling world around him. It’s kind of a rare feat to pull off in comedy, especially to do so without sounding overly self-righteous or preachy.

On his third album Too Woke!, Nore maximizes this talent of commenting on such hot button issues nuances of race, gender, class, and sexuality all while being still very much on point with his punchlines, tags, and delivery. Nore himself is also a joy to listen to as his voice is so animated in so many particularly splendid ways.

Too Woke! just come out today, fresh off the presses from Blonde Medicine and you can (and should) go get it here.

Comedy Dynamics has had a great string of releases recently including albums from Kevin McDonald and Seaton Smith. Nore Davis’ recently released, sophomore album Away Game is also a part of that Comedy Dynamics streak.

Away Game serves as a very solid, appropriately titled follow-up to his debut album Home Game. Nore’s charm on stage is infectious, making his perspective on his own life in his material a pleasure to listen to. Going from ‘Home’ to ‘Away’, you get another great snapshot of Nore’s recent life, coupled with anxieties that naturally come around when you’re a little older, from the same very funny Nore.

So, get and give a listen to Away Game on Amazon or iTunes.
