The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 34: Morgan Jay & Going Boffo on Zoom

November 18, 2020
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
conan, history of sketch comedy, judd apatow, keegan michael key, livestream comedy, morgan jay, zoom comedy

At the top of 2020, Morgan Jay was riding high off of his network TV appearances on Bring the Funny, playing colleges across the country, and being set to make a run at the world famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival. COVID-19, of course, put a full stop to all of that, but that didn’t hold Jay back from still making this a banner year.

Jay zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger on how he spent considerable time and money to fine tuning his live-streamed performances to the best that they could be and how that very quickly evolved into a very steady flow of corporate Zoom gigs and what Jay envisions for how live-streaming will continue to figure into the future of comedy. Also, “hot” takes on Conan’s exit from late night, The History of Sketch Comedy with Keegan-Michael Key, Judd Apatow’s meta quarantine movie.

As you may well know, Wisconsin is a major swing state. As such, there are plenty of big fundraisers that are going towards making sure it swings left.

Oc.t 20th at 6PM PT/8PM CT/9PM ET, the live-stream will feature the likes of: Sarah Silverman, Sarah Cooper, Seth MacFarlane, Kumail Nanjiani, Mike Birbiglia, Hasan Minhaj, Lewis Black, Bassem Youssef, Chelsea Peretti, Whitney Cummings, Judd Apatow, Roy Wood Jr, Maria Bamford, Harry Shearer, Bradley Whitford, Sklar Brothers, Mandy Patinkin, Ahmed Ahmed, Cristela Alonzo, Greg Proops, Jackie Kashian, Will Forte, Ben Gleib, and more.

Pick of the Day: John Cleese on Creativity 9/9

August 28, 2020
News
john cleese, judd apatow

Comedy legend John Cleese was planning to have quite the year with a world tour and a book that gives insights into his own personal process. Despite live events being cancelled almost entirely for 2020, Cleese did a virtual edition of his show Why There Is No Hope and is going forward with the release of his book that has a literally more cheerful title, Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide.

He’ll be doing an exclusive conversation about the book (which ought to be fascinating at a time where creativity seems to be hard to come by for a lot of folks) with Judd Apatow next month, Wed. Sept. 9th at 6PM PT/9PM ET.

You can (and should) get tickets to stream the discussion for $10 here.

The brilliant Kyle Kinane hops on Zoom with TCB’s Jake Kroeger for this week’s Field Report with just having released his latest album, a comedic work of grandeur called Trampoline in a Ditch. Jake and Kyle talk the thought behind releasing a 100 minute comedy album and the phenomenon of the podcast fan via Kinane’s shows that he co-hosts, The Boogie Monster and Hey Girl. They get into some quick takes (and some hot tangents) on AMC doing true crime comedy, Judd Apatow doing a George Carlin doc, and Peacock’s latest comedy programming line-up. Also, there’s quite a bit of reminiscing of Kinane’s comedy throughout his career that you really ought to look up when you get the chance.

Pick of the Day: Upright U.S. Premiere with Live Chat with Tim Minchin & Milly Alcock, Plus Q&A with Judd Apatow

July 20, 2020
News
atx festival, judd apatow, milly alcock, tim minchin

If you ever take a look at Tim Minchin‘s career, the depth and breadth of how the Aussie musical comedian has flourished is astounding. Whether it be his intensely satirical and biting songs to his work on such musicals as Matilda to acting, Minchin seemingly does it all (and it’s all worth watching/listening to).

His latest work comes in the form of a TV series that he’s starring in with Milly Alcock called Upright. It follows Minchin and Alcock as an unlikely pair trying to drive a piano across the deserts of Australia. It’s a role that’s perfect for Minchin. Here’s a bit of a teaser.

Upright is having its North American premiere (before it airs on Sundance Now) via the ATX TV Festival. The first two episodes will be premiering on the ATX TV Festival’s YouTube Channel on Tues. July 21st at 5PM PT/8PM ET/7PM CT. Minchin and Milly Alcock will be chatting on social media as those two episodes arrive.

Along with that, Judd Apatow will be in conversation with Minchin afterwards and that full Q&A will be available for everyone later this week, Wed. July 22nd at 8AM PT/11AM ET/10AM CT.

Gary Gulman is stopping by once more at Largo (he comes by about once a year). However, this time is extra special as it will be an evening that triples as a heads up on his upcoming HBO special The Great Depresh, a wondrous, wondrous line-up of comedians as you can clearly see with Maria Bamford and Patton Oswalt, and a benefit for Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services as well as a conversation about mental health.

It truly is going to be a special night, even by Largo’s high standards, and definitely worth the $58.50 ticket price. Go get your tickets for this evening of The Great Depresh here.

Here Is Brody Stevens’ Set on Conan

Here Is Brody Stevens’ Set on Conan

Brody Stevens should have gotten to do a lot more things for how purely funny he is. In the last several days, you might have scoured the Internet to watch Brody do his thing, which is what we all should have been doing more of when he was around, and saw something like his set on The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail.

For us, we immediately wanted to rewatch and share his set from 2012 on Conan.

It’s special for a few reasons:

1) It is one of his first big time stand-up performances on TV
2) It is one of his first late night spots
3) Most importantly, it’s one of the first times that a national audience got to see Brody be Brody, i.e. the in-the-moment-performance-art-jock that people knew and loved (and thankfully JP, Conan, and Team Coco let that happen in this set).

We weren’t able to find the set outside of the context of Enjoy It!, but we asked the good folks at Team Coco about it and they now have the set for you to watch and enjoy right here.

Oh, you might notice that he indeed jokes about being cut out of Judd Apatow’s Funny People in this set. Judd Apatow found the footage of Brody in Funny People and actually brought everything full circle by showing it on Conan this week.

Judd Apatow’s 2 Part Documentary “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling” Premieres Tonight

It’s rare that you get such an in depth look not only into the mind of a comedian, but a deeper look into a being who simultaneously was one of the most beloved comedians of all time and sincerely pondering the meaning of it all and our connection to each other and the universe.

That’s only possible because the late Garry Shandling kept plenty of notes and diaries for several years and Judd Apatow, a disciple of sorts of Shandling’s, wanted to make a documentary about him.

Here’s Apatow giving a bit of a taste of the doc on Conan.

With that in mind, you can catch the world premiere of The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling tonight and tomorrow on HBO at 8PM.

Here’s the Trailer for Judd Apatow’s HBO Documentary “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling”

One of the first really big gigs that Judd Apatow got was coming aboard The Larry Sanders Show. As such, Garry Shandling played a significant role in his life beyond just being a big time fixture in comedy to admire from afar.

The passing of Shandling came and went quickly, without very much warning, but Garry’s life and career are something to marvel at.

To show people how marvelous it really was, he made an in-depth documentary featuring personal journals, video, etc. coupled with conversations with those closest to Shandling.

The result is The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling. You can get a taste of how deep Apatow goes with this trailer.

Look for the premiere on Mon., March 26 at 8PM on HBO.

Judd Apatow Gets Looks of Concern in Trailer for His Netflix Special

On December 12th, a brand new comedy special from Judd Apatow will stream on Netflix. It won’t be some sort of variety TV special. It will be an hour of stand-up special from the writer/director/producer that used to do stand-up several years ago, first coming up with Adam Sandler before heading off to writing gigs at places like The Larry Sanders Show.

As it turns out, the idea of Judd Apatow: The Return as a stand-up special has caused some alarm for comedians who he has personally worked with behind the camera over the years.

See for yourself in this trailer what Chris Gethard, Amy Schumer, Mike Birbiglia, and more have to “say” to Apatow about returning to doing stand-up.

Freaks and Geeks: The Documentary Coming in 2018

Freak and Geeks, the landmark sitcom that ended up being a launching pad for much of the comedic talent you see on TV and in theaters these days, is getting a documentary with both A&E and Morgan Spurlock on board.

More and more, 1999 becomes a distant memory, and thus, a deep dive back into Freaks and Geeks will probably be a refreshing surprise for many folks who enjoy Paul Feig, Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Martin Starr, James Franco, Busy Philipps, etc. etc.

You’ve now got time between this moment and a TBD premiere date for this doc to, at the very least, watch the series that ended unfortunately far too soon.

Slowly but surely, The Big Sick has been rolling out in theaters across America over the last few weeks.

It indeed is one of the best movies of the years, certainly one of the best romantic comedies this side of the 21st century. Also, if you’ve been following the film’s star and co-writer Kumail Nanjiani on Twitter, you’ve seen that the film has been touching to so many different kinds of people in so many wondrous ways.

So, go see it/go see it again in a theater that’s now probably very close to you.

If you are in NYC or LA, please go see The Big Sick, the movie based on the true love story of Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon.

It rolls out into a wider release next month, but you should go see it the movie if you can before then. Not only did Kumail and Emily write it and Michael Showalter direct it and it has this great trailer and this great clip, but it also isn’t the latest installment of an overblown franchise with robots.

Judd Apatow to Tape a Stand Up Special at JFL Montreal

Judd Apatow to Tape a Stand Up Special at JFL Montreal

Before he became a big time writer/director/producer, Judd Apatow had enveloped himself in comedy through stand-up. It makes sense for someone who was one of the biggest comedy nerds ever (he scored interviews with the biggest comedians of his time while he was in high school) well before podcasts or YouTube was around.

Having gotten tapped for writing and producing gigs like The Larry Sanders Show, Apatow’s stand-up then rested on the backburner for several years.

After carving out a niche as a Hollywood power player, especially in regards to comedy, Apatow returned to stand-up a few years ago, performing regularly all throughout LA’s most respected venues (Largo, Improv, etc.).

So, as he has a comedy series on Netflix, Love, he has been sharpening his stand-up over the last few years, and Netflix loves making big time comedy specials now, this special was inevitable.

If you like to see it live, it tapes at JFL Montreal on July 24th.

Two protagonists from disparate worlds coming together, against all odds, to fall in love is an oft used formula in the world of romantic comedies.

However, a lot of the time, many of those stories are purely fiction and the verisimilitude takes you out of it.

The Big Sick, written by comedy power couple Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon about how they really did come from very different walks of life, under unusual circumstances, and fell in love, living happily ever after.

Watch the trailer and you’ll see the truth ring in their story as presented in what might be this Summer’s comedy hit.

Look for The Big Sick to come out in limited release on June 23rd and in wide release on July 14th.

HBO has come to a decision pretty quick to renew Pete Holmes’ series Crashing for a second season.

The Big Sick, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon’s Love Story, Will Get a Wide Theatrical Summer Release

The Big Sick tells the story of how Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon became the amazing couple that they are now. It had a great showing at Sundance and has since been bought up to possibly be a big time summer romantic comedy this year.

Kumail and Emily wrote the movie, Michael Showalter directed, and Judd Apatow produced it, which hopefully are all the right ingredients for something that will be a critical and commercial success amongst all the tent-pole action franchise releases that it will undoubtedly be up against.

The Big Sick will start rolling out in theaters on June 23rd, then hit a theater near you on July 14th.

Judd Apatow Is Making a Documentary About Garry Shandling

The loss of Garry Shandling last year was devastating. The reverberations of his work are still being widely felt throughout comedy, especially when it comes to The Larry Sanders Show.

To honor his legacy, writer/director/producer Judd Apatow will be making a documentary about Shandling. In fact, Apatow is looking for any photos, videos, etc. that might help in the making of said doc.

No details as to when or where this might be released, but we will update you as soon as we can.
