Pick of Day: In Stitches-Hydrocephalus Association Benefit 11/19

November 18, 2020
News
chris estrada, dan levy, Debbie Allen, esther povitsky, hyrdocephalus, jamie lee, jesse tyler ferguson, kurt braunohler, max greenfield, Meghan Trainor, natasha bedingfield, neil patrick harris, Nigel Lythgoe, rachael harris, sebastian maniscalco, wayne brady, whitney cummings

One of the biggest benefit shows this week is dedicated to raising money in the fight for the deadly condition known as Hydrocephalus via the Hydrocephalus Association. The condition is caused by build-up of fluid in the brain and can currently only treated by brain surgery.

Annually, the Hydrocephalus Association puts on a big benefit show, In Stitches, and they’ve really outdone themselves this year with this 2020 virtual edition. For comedy, Whitney Cummings, Kurt Braunohler, Chris Estrada, Jamie Lee, Dan Levy and Esther Povitsky are on the bill, but there will also be a special musical performance from Natasha Bedingfield as well as some cameos from Debbie Allen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Max Greenfield, Neil Patrick Harris, Rachael Harris, Nigel Lythgoe, Wayne Brady, Sebastian Maniscalco, and Meghan Trainor.

That’s bordering on a mini-festival line-up and should make for a pretty swell Thursday evening this week.

In Stitches is virtually set for Thurs. Nov. 19th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets for the live-stream start at $50. There will also be a silent auction and a virtual red carpet starting at 5:30PM PT/8:30PM ET.

It’s pretty clear as far as we can see: many of the best comedians in town will gather for an all female June every Friday at Sauce @ DeSano Pizza for the cleverly coined Pizza Coven.

Just like at that exquisite line-up that includes many of our personal favorites, folks who have been killing it on TV for years, legitimate nationally touring headliners, and more over the next four weeks and you’ll know that your Fridays should be spent at one of the best pizza joints in LA.

So, reserve your tickets here for a Pizza Coven already.

Jamie Lee Developing Subversive Rom Com ‘The Girlfriend’ Over at Freeform

The romantic comedy genre is beginning to get turned inside out these days and we’re on board for it. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has gained acclaim from the get-go by re-examining gender roles and stereotypes to catchy songs from every genre and there’s a feminist answer to Kevin Can Wait called Kevin Can F*** Himself in the works at AMC.

To add to that, the whipsmart Jamie Lee is now writing her own unique, dark rom com that follows the girlfriend of a husband who is the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance (kind of like Emily Ratajkowski in Gone Girl, right?). Seeing this sort of woman’s story beyond her being a usually one-dimensional character along with Lee’s impeccable comedic writing will undoubtedly be fascinating.

So, we hope this gets a greenlight at Freeform.

Please Enjoy Jamie Lee from Last Night’s Corden

Jamie Lee has been, in our opinion, prime to release an album quite for some time. So, with that in mind, you’re getting a great collection of Jamie’s best over the last several years, which are seamlessly stitched together on “I Mean…”.

Jamie has a great eye and ear for detail in her life for her comedy and also has a deft talent for wordplay and metaphor that are quite enjoyable. Also, Jamie will occasionally flaunt a sort-of syncopated timing on some of our favorite jokes from her that highlight how great Jamie is at crafting her brand of humor.

You can hear all of that on her very first album “I Mean…” fresh off the presses from AST Records. Get it on Apple Music here.

We like where TruTV is going with this comedy thing.

Since they rebranded as a comedy network from playing Court TV a lot, TruTV has come a long way in, we think, the right direction. With Those Who Can’t from The Grawlix ready to come out next year, this latest announcement of their new series and pilot orders with people we think are really funny is even more exciting.

First off, Jamie Lee will be hosting 10 Things, a comedic countdown/breakdown of ‘out there’ topics. Then, Almost Genius will look into people that live up to the show’s title and will be hosted by April Richardson and Chris Fairbanks. On top of that, truOriginals: Inside Iconic Comedy will explore the story of the funniest films in the cinematic canon.

For pilots, they have Jon Glaser Loves Gear where the one and only Jon Glaser obsesses over outdoor gear and Naomi Ekperigin hosting Inside Caucasia where she dissects what white people like doing from the perspective of a black woman.

We can’t wait to see all of this soon.

Jamie Lee and Josh Rabinowitz star and do a great job trying to not rip each other’s throats out as a recently broken up couple.

Comedians’ Guide To Twitter: Tweeting (#articlesnoonecaresabout)

January 14, 2011
Uncategorized
comedian's guide to twitter, comedy, eddie pepitone, jamie lee, jim hamilton, la, lizzy cooperman, matt knudsen, paul f tompkins, punchline magazine, tweeting, twitter

There is something about 140 characters that specifically attracts the comedian and people who want to turn their clever quips that they think are so funny to their friends and co-workers all to the social networking/micro-blogging site Twitter.  Whether it be coming up with quick zingers, observing minutia, gleaning the absurdities of your own psyche, or simply promoting yourself, Twitter has almost become a necessary tool for those in the business of being funny.

As this is the unfortunate necessity, the following is the beginning in yet another continuing series on the Comedy Bureau of a crash course guide of sorts to Twitter for the comedian brand new to Twitter, so they can both navigate and understand the terse nature that borders on being an entirely separate language fostered in Twitter land.

TWEETING

As the device that drives the almost certifiable addiction that is Twitter, tweeting will seem inconsequential to you, at first, until someone brings it up in conversation, “Hey, that was a really funny tweet that you had,” which will cause you to tweet more and subsequently get more followers.  However, you’ll probably end up going on some type of tweeting bend after seeing a promo on the side of a bus for some show perhaps called, “Episodes”, and then lose a significant portion of the 200 followers that you had because they were just robots anyway.

My advice, thusly, would be simply to be consistent (i.e. have a style/tweet jokes/promote yourself/don’t tweet at all) on Twitter and don’t overcrowd people’s feeds with more than 7-10 tweets-a-day.  For the most part, the funniest people on Twitter seem to stick to those basic principles. ex. Jamie Lee (@thejamielee), Matt Knudsen (@matt_knudsen), Lizzy Cooperman (@lizzycooperman), and Jim Hamilton (@jim_hamilton).

Of course, there are exceptions to this; one of them being the one and only Eddie Pepitone (@eddiepepitone), who is so consistent and uproarious with everything that he tweets that I don’t mind that his constant updates of his “to do list”-1) Tamper with brakes on Al’s car so they fail on highway. 2) get wigs and cyanide ready. 3) make Tofu.  Having just been nominated as one of the best comedians on Twitter by Punchline Magazine, He can get away with tweeting non-stop.

Another frequent phenomenon that has become popular amongst comedians is the advent of “live tweeting”, which is, in essence, a play-by-play commentary on any event in real time via Twitter.  The best example of this came this past Christmas Eve when Paul F Tompkins (@pftompkins) live tweeted throughout the entire duration of the Pope’s televised Midnight Mass and subsequently got himself trending in the Greater Los Angeles area.  Live tweeting can almost be compared to an extended bit of comedic material focused mostly on punchlines.

Again, those two examples both rely on consistency, as opposed to someone having 10 tweets about how they’re mad how the Lakers lost, then 5 more trying to figure out what exactly a “norror movie” (#norrormovies) is, then 25 more tweets spent in a “fight” with someone that you could call because you have their phone number, but choose not to because of the comfortably think anonymity of the Internet.  Still, all of those tangents I just mentioned are actually quite entertaining, but just incredibly annoying to read all from the same person in the same day, often times within the span of 3 hours.

So, in conclusion, in regards to tweeting, pick your poison (as you’ll get addicted to it) and stick with it.
