Phoebe Waller-Bridge Has Been Made the First President of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society

February 19, 2021
News
edinburgh fringe, fringe festival, phoebe waller bridge

Phoebe Waller-Bridge stands very, very tall these days from being one of the most successful veterans of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where her groundbreaking show Fleabag was first performed as a solo show before it became the beloved and acclaimed TV series.

So, the Fringe Society, the charity organization that supports artists performing at the world famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival, has appointed Phoebe as a President (FYI, most performers at the Fringe have to pay their own way to the festival from top to bottom and can only hope to make their money back through ticket sales). She’ll be reaching out on behalf of and represent the Fringe Society and she is pretty much the perfect person to do so.

We’ll be curious to see what her first moves in this capacity as Fringe Society President as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival isn’t happening live and in person until 2022. There will be some sort of virtual programming, but the details haven’t been announced yet.

In any case, it’s about time Phoebe Waller-Bridge had a title like president bestowed on her.

🚨Big news! 🚨

Yes, yes, it really is true…

We're excited to announce that @fleabag star, the excellent Phoebe Waller-Bridge, has been appointed as the first ever President of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society ❣️

Edinburgh Fringe Festival Now Aiming to Return in Full Force in 2022

December 10, 2020
News
edinburgh, edinburgh fringe festival, fringe festival

(via Scotsman)

Though the first tiny waves of vaccines for COVID-19 are starting to make their way to essential front line medical workers, the time at which some sort of degree of normalcy where gathering isn’t at all a massive health hazard is still far off enough that a specific date is speculative at best.

That means that large scale festivals like the Edinburgh Fringe Festival are going to have to wait longer to get back to a semblance of how they used to do things. The chiefs of one of the largest performance festivals in the world, which happens to include a cornucopia of comedy and comedy adjacent shows/acts, have decided that they won’t even think about doing a full scale, “normal” version of the Edinburgh Fringe in 2021, but look towards for 2022 for that to happen.

The likelihood of having to social distance at a festival that historically jam packed within and outside of every venue presents a problem for any of the performers putting up their shows on their own dime and trying to make money/break even. Rather than deal with that, the Edinburgh Fringe is still trying to formulate exactly what they’re going to do with this year that will be COVID-19 safe meaning that the legendary crowds multiplying the population of Edinburgh a few times over will be absent.

The Living Room is a wild, thoughtful, thought-provoking, and touching comedic journey through, of all things, grief and loss. Amrita Dhaliwal and Gemma Soldati who created and star in the show do a beautiful job of realizing and expressing the process of mourning through absurd vignettes and involving the audience in “the living room”. It has been transformative and hilarious every time we’ve seen it.

The Living Room is about to have a run at the upcoming Hollywood Fringe Festival at the Theatre of NOTE in Hollywood. Tickets are $15 and dates are below.

Sun. Jun. 9th 5PM

Help Send The Tomorrow Show! with Ron Lynch to The Edinburgh Fringe Festival

For almost 9 years, we’ve enjoyed the magical evening of comedy that is The Tomorrow Show here in LA. It’s about time the rest of the world got to enjoy it as much as we do, so donate what you can to help the incomparable Ron Lynch make his goal to make The Tomorrow Show @ Edinburgh Fringe the most wondrous it can be.

He’s looking to raise $10,000 and has $7.277 raised. He’s ending the campaign by midnight tomorrow.

In case you didn’t know, Set List is an international phenomenon, touring the world and playing festivals like the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (they’ll be playing there this year as well).

Watch UK comedian Ed Byrne do Set List, at their Nerdist channel series, very nicely as he even pulls off a topic in one line.

1) Bill Burr on Letterman.

2) If you follow everything that I write, I spend quite a bit of time defending what comedians say, even if I think it’s hack, bigoted, etc., but somehow has made other people laugh. However, this latest case of an audience member telling a story of date-raping a girl at the show ASSSSCAT during the Del Close Marathon in NY is something that I can’t and won’t intellectually defend even if he was somehow kidding and made the whole thing up. From all accounts, people were cringing, verbally booing, and more in an attempt to get him to stop, which really breaks the main rule that I stand behind, which is “no matter what you talk about, you have to be funny.” Get the full story from Halle Kiefer at Splitsider.

3) On a much lighter note, the line-up for the comedy portion of the FYF Fest, which comprises about .5% of the festival, is FINALLY HERE. Emo Phillips, Marc Maron, and the Sklar Brothers are just a few names…

4) We didn’t even realize that Deadspin had a Comedy Week until yesterday. There’s some fascinating stuff, namely, a tribute to Mitch Hedberg, and a feature on Sean Patton. Thanks to Luke Cunningham for pointing this out.

5) Judges at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival actually picked the Top 10 One-Liners from all the comedians and we think that Matt Kirshen got robbed.

6) The Compatish finds and actually plays The Bachelor: The Game.

7) So, Nikki Glaser has fan t-shirts… (Special thanks to Scott Bowser pictured below)

8) Puddin’-“True Love”

12) OK, I love this city dearly and inhabitants, often transplants, are resentful of LA not living up to their expectations. It’s an unfortunate circumstance for any metropolis this size and I sincerely wish anyone that whines about being guilted to live here because they felt they had to in order to accomplish something would go back to where they came from. Even with that in mind and making my peace with all the shortcomings of Los Angeles, freeway construction at 1AM at every fucking off-ramp and on-ramp causing bumper to bumper traffic can go fuck itself once we make that possible.

3) Comedy Store paid regular Jerrod Carmichael has been on Twitter for awhile, but he’s only now starting to share his brilliant humor with the microblogging world, @NotoriousRod as he live tweets his niece’s dance recital.

7) Below is a clip of Louis CK doing a 3 minute set in 1987. He’s doing dolphin jokes. There’s hints of what he does now, but only hints. It’s now 2011 and some of his best material is about his two daughters.  To anyone thinking wondering about development as an artist as a comedian, well, here’s a perfect example of how drastic it can be.

11) Last night I did 20 minutes that I would best describe as mostly nonsense riffing with a strong start and finish that I would most likely want to delete off of my phone’s voice recorder.  Yet, a real person (not a comic) came up to me and thanked me for making him laugh.  Despite what I thought, I didn’t correct him because, really, he’s right.

12) Special thanks to Jordan Brady for the shout out on Twitter this morning.  Please follow him at @IAmComicMovie (oh yeah, did I mentioned he directed I Am Comic?)

6) OK, as far as comedy flyers go, this is one of the best I’ve seen this year (anyone thinking about making a Five Guys spin off, don’t).  Also, go see Powerviolence (the show this flyer is for) on Sundays.  It’s unbridled fun.

7) Puddin’ “Enviroment”

8) Don’t bother with questioning.  Of course you would love a summer camp run by comedian Barry Rothbart. So, watch the trailer for Barry Rothbart’s new series Sunshine.
