NBC Announces Peacock’s Development Slate Featuring MacGruber, a Soccer Comedy EP’d by Amy Poehler and Abby Wambach, a McElroy Fantasy Series, and a Laverne Cox Vehicle

The streaming wars are sure getting fierce. As each respective streaming service is building their army of content, the announcement of what’s to come is becoming more and more crucial.

Today, NBC’s upcoming streaming service Peacock came out swinging by announcing for Peacock’s development slate:

-a series based on the cult comedy MacGruber from Will Forte

-Division One, a women’s soccer comedy that follows a former-champ-turned-coach trying to recapture some former glory (with both Amy Poehler and US Women’s Team World Cup Champion Abby Wambach attached as EPs)

-the McElroy Brothers of My Brother, My Brother, and Me doing an entire fantasy series that combines their D&D podcast/graphic novel series The Adventure Zone

–Expecting, a Mindy Kaling comedy that imagines a new sort of nuclear family

–Clean Slate, that has Laverne Cox playing a formerly estranged son that returns home as an amazing trans woman (a role perfect for Cox)

It’s an enticing line-up, but we’ll just have to wait and see how it’ll fare against everything else (Netflix, Hulu, HBOMax, Disney+, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime, etc. etc.).

Comedy Central Adds Scripted Projects ‘Interracial Couple’ from Naomi Ekperigin & Andy Beckerman, ‘The Chameleon’ from Matteo Lane, and an Adaptation of ‘Meaty’ from Samantha Irby

This announcement by Comedy Central for their time at the TCA Press Tour is much more exciting than their addition of another David Spade pop culture show to their late night offerings.

Couples Therapy’s Naomi Ekperigin and Andy Beckerman are long overdue for their own show, especially one following their lives, the prospect of seeing Matteo Lane as a spy is pretty enticing as well, and Samantha Irby is already showing a lot of promise from her work that we can see on Hulu’s upcoming series Shrill. We hope these get fast tracked through pilot to series over at CC.

Comedy Central 2018-2019 Development Slate Includes an Arturo Castro Sketch Show, a Pilot Based on the Life of Awkwafina, a Rory Scovel Basketball Comedy Pilot, This Week at Comedy Cellar

Comedy Central 2018-2019 Development Slate Includes an Arturo Castro Sketch Show, a Pilot Based on the Life of Awkwafina, a Rory Scovel Basketball Comedy Pilot, This Week at Comedy Cellar

With Broad City coming to its final season, you’re getting a look at Comedy Central’s hopes for their future.

Arturo Castro, who plays Jaime on Broad City, will be the next bet for the cable network’s sketch series with Alternatino (there were pretty fun digital episodes of this by the way) . Also, in connection with Broad City, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer will EP Gabe Liedman’s animated pilot Mall City USA.

This Week at Comedy Cellar will be the latest edition of Comedy Central’s vast collection of stand-up showcases series. However, this show will be focusing on comics developing fresh material including what they do behind the scenes.

Awkwafina, who audiences will get to know a little better when Ocean’s 8 comes out, is developing a pilot based on her life.

There is a pilot, Robbie, which probably affords the chance for Rory Scovel give a half-time sports speech. We are so on board for that.

If you though that the sketch show Friends of the People came to an end too early, there’s a chance you’ll get to enjoy alums Kevin Barnett and Josh Rabinowitz once more if their pilot Kevin vs. Josh goes to series.

Overall, there is plenty of promise here, leaving us to wonder if this will keep Comedy Central in the race with streaming services and premium cable networks that seem to be expanding their comedy line-ups more every season.

IFC Reveals 11 Shows in Their 2018 Development Slate

With Portlandia coming to a close relatively soon, IFC casted a wide net to find their next scripted hit.

Nearly all these shows are high concept and include such intriguing elements as a “botched cyborg”, a kill list, a struggling dominatrix, West African charities that have gotten out of hand, and rigging an election.

Attached to these projects are the talents of Gabe Delahaye, Josh Ruben, Emily Flake, Elna Baker, Jocelyn DeBoer/Dawn Luebbe, Matteo Lane, and more.

Some of these shows have script orders while others are just incubating in IFC’s Comedy Crib initiative. In any case, IFC has a lot on their plate, especially for a cable network.

With all of this in mind, don’t be surprised if you see a much different looking IFC with a bunch of new shows in the next year or two.

IFC Has 8 New Series in Development Including Ones from Brooks Wheelan and Bryan Cranston

IFC’s is really branching out this year.

With anything ranging from Portlandia to Maron to Comedy Bang! Bang! to Documentary Now!, IFC is really trying to make its mark with programming that fall under their banner of ‘Always On Slightly Off.”

The slate of series that they’re developing really takes that moniker to new territory.

For 2016, IFC’s slate has:

-Todd Barth Can Help You-a new series from Bryan Cranston, along with Clay Graham and Steven Weber, follows an insurance adjuster who decides to, all of sudden, make a go at being a new age self-help guru.
-Canterbury Tales-Set around Hollywood’s first punk rock club in the 70s, this Allison Anders (Mi Vida Loca, Grace Of My Heart) and Terry Graham (drummer for seminal punk band The Bags, Gun Club, and author of Punk Like Me) series follows a brand new spankin’ band trying to make it.
–Detective Lady-BoJack Horseman’s Kelly Galuska has made a noir-ish comedy focused on a play-by-her-own rules detective.
-How to Rig an Election-Adapted from Allen Raymond’s book How to Rig An Election, Tom Ruprecht (Late Night with David Letterman, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore) is set to explore the dark side of political campaigning that people are becoming more and more aware of everyday.
–Grand Lake-From WGA award-winning Gretchen Enders (Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street), this dark comedy circles two friends who wish the worst for each other.
-Laughs in Translation-The Above Average web series hosted by Brooks Wheelan where he tries to discover what makes for comedy around the world might be getting an upgrade to linear TV.
-Living With Yourself-Emmy and Peabody award-winning Tim Greenberg (Daily Show) has made a layered, philosophical comedy that trails a frustrated copywriter desperate to become a better person who goes through a unique treatment to do so.
-This Land Is Ours-This series from Vicki Pepperdine and Joanna Scanlan (Creators of Getting On and Puppy Love) shows squatters in Harlem squaring off with billionaires to keep the building they love.
-Jon Benjamin’s 100 Erotic Nights-Jon Benjamin delves into confessions of passion and betrayal all while still being Jon Benjamin.
–A late night talk show Hosted by Jim Norton-A newer version of Norton’s talk show that he briefly had on Vice.

Pilot/Script Development with:
-Untitled Jessica Williams Project – “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” correspondent brings her unique point-of-view to a narrative scripted pilot executive produced, starring and written by Williams with Naomi Ekperigin.
–Untitled Jordan Klepper Project – “Daily Show” correspondent Jordan Klepper has signed a development deal with Comedy Central for a late night talk show presentation.
–Untitled Rachel Feinstein Project – this half-hour pilot starring Rachel Feinstein features hidden camera segments where Feinstein goes undercover to perform social experiments that tackle a different issue or theme each week. The series includes stand-up, sketch and conversations with comedians where Feinstein riffs on the week’s theme.
–Untitled Justin Willman Project – Comedian Justin Willman aims to fix the world’s greatest problems and social injustices using the only logical method we have left: Magic.
–“Do You Want to See a Dead Body?” – based on the Funny or Die shorts, “Do You Want to See a Dead Body?” is a half-hour, scripted pilot that follows Rob Huebel as he embarks on a bizarre quest/adventure to see a dead body with a different celebrity guest each week.
–“Germany” (pilot presentation) – Executive produced by and starring Channing Tatum, “Germany” explores the trials and tribulations of diverse microorganisms living in a microcosm of our world – complete with political scandals, climate change and vaccination deniers. “Germany” is a unique world in which both the laughter and the characters are contagious.
-“Hood Adjacent” – Based on the Comedy Central original series, “Swag-A-Sauraus with James Davis” on Snapchat Discover, Davis, who was born and raised in South Central, one block away from where the sh** goes down, uses his multifaceted hybrid brand of comedy to share his unique take on the world.
–“Live From Everywhere” – shot in front of a studio audience, this live, half-hour variety show for the digital generation uses live streams to orchestrate the coolest, most unpredictable hangouts with celebrities and comedians.
–“Problematic with Moshe Kasher” – a half-hour pilot hosted by Moshe Kasher who uses his own brand of “comedy journalism” to crawl into the social media muck of our most polarizing issues, provocative questions and heated arguments and dissect them in front of a studio audience.
-“Rudy” (pilot presentation) – an animated project written by Robert Padnick that follows childish “cholo” Rudy Cisneros who, after serving a 15-year prison sentence, wants to dissociate from gang life and start being there for his wife, kids and abuelita.
–“Storytime” – based on the web series created by Chioke Nassor, this half-hour pilot follows three comedians who recreate personal stories by playing every character in their story in dreamlike reenactments. In between segments, the performers and a host sit at a roundtable dissecting and reacting to one another’s stories in front of a live audience.
–Untitled Kyle Dunnigan Project (script deal) – this script, set at a superhero academy, follows Kyle Dunnigan (“Inside Amy Schumer”) as a professor with unimpressive powers.
-“Awkwafina” (script deal) – half-hour scripted narrative that focuses on a heightened version of Nora Lum, better known as rapper Awkwafina, as she navigates the underground hip hop community in Queens.
–Best Seller” (script deal) – this script written by Nora Kirkpatrick and Dennis McNicholas, is set in the world of a third rate home shopping network. After the reigning queen of the channel is electrocuted on-air during a hair drying demonstration gone wrong, her three venomous power hungry disciples enter into a cutthroat competition for her coveted time slot.
–“Casey Vs.” (script deal) – Casey Jost one-ups “Man vs. Wild” in the most extreme survival guide ever made and teaches viewers how to handle everything from the zombie apocalypse to an alien invasion.
–“Delco Proper” (script deal) – based on the Comedy Central digital series, “Delco Proper” centers around a family owned lumber yard and its blue collar crew made up of hardworking locals who never left their hometown in Delaware County, PA.
–“Drunk Girl/High Guy” (script deal) – this Sarah Walker script follows the adventures of two best friends and work wife/work husband in New York City – a girl who is almost always drunk, and a guy who is almost always high.
–“East 89th” (script deal) – based on Sean Donnelly’s real life experiences centering around the dysfunctional doormen of a luxury high-rise building on East 89th Street in New York City.
–“GERP” (script deal) – Produced by Jack Black’s Electric Dynamite and co-written by Dick Blasucci (“Mad TV”) and Janine DeTullio (“Late Night wtih Jimmy Fallon”), this show within a show follows a federal worker who hosts a government produced variety TV show from inside his cubicle during the work day.
-“Legal-ish” (script deal) – written by Dave Storrs and Steve Mallory, follows a well-meaning slacker who finds himself on the jury bench of the longest-running case at his local courthouse.
–“New Timers” (script deal) – based on the Comedy Central Digital series, “New Timers” takes place following an apocalyptic “event.” Matt Porter and Charlie Hankin, who create, star, executive produce and direct the series, now live their day-to-day in what’s left of Brooklyn, looking for adventures, new friends and ways to pass the time.
-“Tijuana Beach” (script deal) – this animated project follows a Mexican American father who inherits a rundown resort from his uncle and relocates his family to Mexico.
–“Used People” (script deal) – based on the Comedy Central digital series written by Michelle Wolf and Dan Soder, “Used People” follows uptight Michelle and stoner Dan who spend their days arguing, obsessing over their messy personal lives and – theoretically – selling used cars.

We’re really excited to see The Goddamn Comedy Jam, Roast Battle, hour stand-up specials from Kurt Braunohler, Joe DeRosa, another one from Trevor Moore and Dan Soder, and what Jordan Klepper and Jessica Williams will do with their new deals.

Also, from the sound of Moshe Kasher and Rob Huebel’s pilots, we hope that they get to see the light of day past being a pilot.
