The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 41: Luisa Diez & Reimagining Comedy (When COVID’s Over)

January 6, 2021
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
chris rock, la comedy, nyc comedy, richard pryor

It’s the first ep. 0f 2021 and the future of comedy is still very, very much up in the air. Not only is the pandemic set to probably keep live comedy a precarious endeavor through a good portion of 2021, but what will be left on the other side of the pandemic in regards to talent, venues, etc. is, as with all things at this time, uncertain.

To parse through all of that (and maybe even solve all of comedy’s problems) at the top of this year/just another week is venerable NYC indie comedy producer/arts & media consultant/co-host of Why You Mad? Luisa Díez. Luisa zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger to analyze how comedy changed in 2020, comedian migratory patterns, and even how comedians can dish it, but often can’t take it. Also, “hot” takes on re-releases of Chris Rock and Richard Pryor and tv/film production having to halt due to COVID-19.

Follow Luisa @luisadieznuts on Twitter and get into her podcast that she co-hosts with Jake Flores, Why You Mad?

Netflix to Release Extended/Remixed Version of Chris Rock’s Tamborine (Because Maybe They Don’t Have Very Many New Specials on Deck?)

January 4, 2021
News
chris rock, netflix, tamborine

Next Tuesday, we’ll get a new Netflix stand-up special.

Well, we will kind of get a new one.

Announced today, Chris Rock’s great 2018 special Tamborine will be getting a special extended cut to be released on Netflix. It’ll be called TOTAL BLACKOUT: The Tamborine Extended Cut and it’ll indeed feature jokes that were cut from the original special. For that alone, we are indeed looking forward to it (though it’s release is a curious case).

In fact, Rock himself describes it as a first-of-its-kind remixed special. That somewhat begs the question as to why Netflix and Rock are doing an extended version of a special from over two years ago. Tamborine was pretty well received (we loved it and kudos to Bo Burnham giving it a cinematic flair), but we suspect a “remixed” release is one of many tactics that streaming services and networks will be employing to keep producing content while having production on new specials/shows cancelled/paused/etc.

Also, as the pandemic rages on, the pace at which Netflix has been releasing comedy specials has ticked down very noticeably. At one point, you could almost count on two new comedy specials a week to drop on Netflix versus Natalie Palamides: NATE and London Hughes: To Catch a D*ck being the two that we remember coming out last month. Netflix did chop up their specials and churned out “Best of Stand Up 2020”, but there’s nothing new in there.

So, we can all look forward to TOTAL BLACKOUT: The Tamborine Extended Cut on Jan. 12th on Netflix and you can potentially look to more reimagining by Netflix and others on how they’ll keeping their place in stand-up comedy secure.

Expect Chris Rock’s Tamborine to Be Awards Frontrunner for Comedy Specials

February 14, 2018
Uncategorized
chris rock, comedy special, stand up, tamborine

Finally, we have gotten a special from a comedy legend (that hasn’t done a comedy special in a very long time) that can live up to the hype.

Tamborine both satisfies the long-held, unsatisfied craving that you’ve probably had for a new hour of stand-up from Chris Rock and offers a more mature, vulnerable, introspective Rock. For instance, he not only hushes the crowd immediately to get to a joke about police brutality and racial inequality without any sort of greeting, but Rock opens up about his divorce and raising his kids in a way that you might have not imagined Chris Rock would ever do. In short, Rock doesn’t disappoint at a time when heroes of all kinds have been disappointing right and left.

Also, one should take note that Rock tapped Bo Burnham (who has directed two of his own specials and Jerrod Carmichael’s 8) to direct his latest special and the result looks subtly slick and very personal (i.e. this special has some of the most extreme close-ups ever used in a comedy special).

When the next awards season comes around, it’d be surprising to not see Rock’s new hour be heavily favorited wherever it can be nominated.

Chris Rock: Tamborine is now streaming on Netflix. So, go watch it (or watch it again) already.

Turns Out Netflix’s Tamborine Is a Chris Rock Special That Will Be Coming Out on Valentine’s Day

We’re going to go ahead and say that no one came close to guessing that Chris Rock’s first stand-up special in several years was what behind Netflix’s mysterious tamborine announcement a few days ago.

In any case, Chris Rock: Tamborine will drop at midnight on Netflix and, we guess, be Rock’s Valentine’s gift to us all?

BET Will Be Entering into Late Night Tomorrow with “The Rundown with Robin Thede”

The Rundown with Robin Thede, the topical late night show produced by Chris Rock, will kick off Thursday night, October 12th at 10PM.

You might remember Thede from The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, which seems like such a distant memory these days, especially when it comes to the world of late night. As to what’s to come on The Rundown, the show itself is shrouded in a bit of mystery as there is only this promo for the time being.

It just so happens that Sarah Silverman’s topical show I Love You, America begins streaming on Hulu on Thursday as well.

Given the pace of the news right now, there seems to be room in late night for attempting to digest and make fun of whatever happened earlier in the day.

Dave Chappelle Will Be Doing Another Residency at Radio City Music Hall Featuring The Roots, Chris Rock, Trevor Noah, Ali Wong, Erykah Badu, and Childish Gambino

In 2014, Dave Chappelle did a whole run of shows at the legendary Radio City Music Hall featuring guests like The Roots.

That seemed to go pretty well.

So, Dave is doing it again this August with plenty of the aforementioned big name guests. Tickets for this residency will go on sale this Friday.

BET Is Getting Their Own Late Night Show Hosted by Robin Thede and Produced by Chris Rock

It’ll be called The Rundown with Robin Thede and air weekly with 24 episodes on BET. Thede was the head writer for The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore and a frequent panelist and Chris Rock is, well, Chris Rock.

There are a lot of developments that we’re curious to see play out here.

First, BET isn’t a place that anyone has associated with late night, but the tides of late night on cable over the last few years have encouraged networks to throw their hat in the ring.

Second, weekly late night shows are growing in number every other week, it would seem, and we hope this isn’t the case of a bubble growing only to burst.

Third, Comedy Central has a Franchesca Ramsey (another Nightly Show alum) show in the works that, if picked up, will undoubtedly have to deal with comparisons to Thede’s show. For that, the strategy of either show will be very interesting.

Fourth, this means late night will now have Trevor Noah, Desus & Mero, Tavis Smiley, and Robin Thede as hosts and thus making late night seem much less white than it was just a couple of years ago.

We be excitedly waiting through the summer to see indeed what happens.

Nightly Show Head Writer Robin Thede and Chris Rock Are Making a Weekly Comedy News Show Pilot “The Rundown with Robin Thede”

Nightly Show Head Writer Robin Thede and Chris Rock Are Making a Weekly Comedy News Show Pilot “The Rundown with Robin Thede”

While this is being announced as “…a fast-paced half-hour look at the week’s headlines, celebrity newsmakers, social media buzz and pop culture trends,” don’t be surprised if Thede and Rock have something more clever up their sleeves.

Since the cancellation of The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, there seems to be a void where Wilmore’s voice once was in late night. The precision of Last Week Tonight and the unapologetic fire of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee have cemented their places in late night, but it would seem that The Nightly Show just didn’t get enough time to figure out where it fit in the post-Daily-Show-with-Jon-Stewart world.

Now, with this pilot being made and shopped around with Chris Rock on board, Thede might just pick up the baton that Wilmore had to set down.

Chris Rock Will Do Two Comedy Specials at Netflix for $40 Million

How often will Netflix be outspending HBO?

When it comes to Chris Rock comedy specials, it almost went without saying that HBO was the place that it would be.

That all changed today with Rock reportedly getting a $40 million deal for two comedy specials.

The times have indeed changed and Netflix not only is gaining in on HBO prestige with their increasing number of critically acclaimed and award winning series and specials, but it seems like they’ve got the money to keep this pace up.

This deal puts Rock on the Forbes list for top earning comedians for the next two years by the way.

Above all, we’re happy to hear that the latest stand-up from Chris Rock will be two new hours rather than just a host monologue or a couple of minutes as an awards show presenter.

Bono Thinks That Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Their Comedy Should Be Deployed Against ISIS

While you might think this this celebrity fueled clickbait, take note that Bono from U2 did just go to a U.S. Senate subcommittee hearing and suggested that comedy be employed in taking down terrorist group ISIS, specifically Amy Schumer, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Chris Rock.

That’s one of the world’s most well known musicians giving credence to the power of comedy and recommending comedy in fighting the narrow minded extremism over other art forms that are more often highly regarded for their political activism.

So, Schumer, Cohen, and Rock should be doing an ISIS roast?

While there was a bit of buzz drummed up when Chris Rock was announced as the host of this year’s Oscars, the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, born out of all the nominees for this year being white, put Rock in a critical position to potentially deliver one of the most hotly anticipated awards hosting performances ever.

In fact, his monologue and bits throughout may showcase the value of these awards telecasts over it being Hollywood patting itself on the back as well as how powerful some jokes can be.

Again, tune in at 5:30PM PST/8:30PM EST on ABC.

In fact, he’s rewriting a bunch of the show after all the controversy over the last week.

The #OscarsSoWhite topic has been hotly trending all over social media and some have called for Chris Rock to step down as host of The Oscars as a stand against the lack of diversity within The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

However, Rock recently confirmed that he is definitely sticking around as host and won’t be wasting the opportunity to take it to whoever he chooses. The Academy has stated that they are actually backing whatever he’s going to do. In addition to the plan to introduce more diversity, this second vote of confidence in Rock is a good start for change to The Oscars.

More than anything else, this means you should be able to see Chris Rock dropping in a lot of places to work on his monologue in the coming months.

Also, George Clooney, Jason Schwartzman, Chris Rock, Amy Poehler, Miley Cyrus, Michael Cera, Maya Rudolph, Paul Shaffer, and Rashida Jones might be in attendance.

So, why should the Christmas special A Very Murray Christmas be any different than that? Answer: It shouldn’t.

After over a month of tributes and farewells, David Letterman kept his send-off relatively short and sweet.

There was a star-studded Top Ten List of Things I’ve Always Wanted To Say To David Letterman that included Bill Murray, Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Peyton Manning, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Jim Carrey, as well as a special performance of “Everlong” by The Foo Fighters.

There was also a nice opening bit from various Presidents.

Outside of that, Dave respectfully spent much his time delving into nostalgia and thanking all of the folks that have been a part of his show over 30 years.

There was even a “day in the life” montage of what Dave goes through with his staff.

With over 30 years and 6000+ shows logged, it’s amazing that Letterman is still self-deprecating in his final remarks.

Just like that, just a little past midnight last night. The Late Show with David Letterman and an entire era of comedy comes to a close.

You can watch the entire finale here.

Of course, Dave also made sure to send his best wishes to the new guy, Stephen Colbert.

Speaking of which, does anyone have a countdown going for Sept. 8th?

Unlike the last several comedy specials you’ve seen, she’s shooting it at The Apollo Theater.

HBO’s next big one hour comedy special will come from Amy Schumer who is posting a banner year in 2015 with all the acclaim that Inside Amy Schumer is getting, hosting the MTV Movie Awards, and having her movie Trainwreck coming out soon.

Now, Amy has added to that this HBO comedy special that is set to shoot on May 29th at The Apollo Theater (Yes, the one where they’ve had a man with a broom sweep performers off stage) with Chris Rock at the helm.

Looks like they’ll have to make that banner a little bigger.
