Pick of the Day: Mandee Johnson In Conversation with Christina Catherine Martinez About ‘Super Serious’ 8/20

August 14, 2020
News
book release, chris garcia, dave anthony, mandee johnson, sara schaefer, super serious show

While one of our actual favorite monthly shows has to be in hiatus for now because of, well, you know why at this point, that isn’t stopping The Super Serious Show from keeping the ball in the air with something inventive, substantive, enlightening, and fun.

We’ve already gave you the low down on Super Serious: An Oral History of Los Angeles Independent Stand-Up Comedy and why it’s very likely our favorite coffee table book in recent memory. It’s currently up for pre-order and shipping out next week, Tue. Aug. 18th.

Once again, you really ought to get it if you like comedy at all.

As part of the book’s release, Mandee Johnson will be doing an exclusive event via Book Soup on Thu. Aug. 20th at 6PM PT/9PM ET that will be a conversation about the breadth of LA comedy history within the book, but also feature a damn fine line-up of guests including Dave Anthony, Sara Schaefer, Chris Garcia, and Christina Catherine Martinez as the pro art critic/comedian moderator.

RSVP for the event (and order the book from Book Soup) here.

Chris Garcia Shares His Experience Performing Stand-Up via Live-Stream with LA Times

April 6, 2020
News
chris garcia, la times, live stream stand up

By this point, you have had to dip into at least one comedy live-stream somewhere just to, if nothing else, satisfy your curiosity as to what comedy is right now, will be for some weeks to come, and what will undoubtedly have an undeniable effect on live comedy going forward.

It’s a strange sight to see comedians in their homes, apartments, parts of apartments that they live in and perform stand-up, often while seated, to any number of live-streaming platforms. Yet, despite the lack of a live audience (unless you’re doing/watching it on Zoom), live comedy can indeed work in this unprecedented set-up, especially when almost everyone could use a break from the non-stop news about COVID-19.

To this point, the LA Times sat down, remotely, with Chris Garcia (one of our absolute local favorites and one of the hosts of LA comedy scene staple, The Business) to interview him about how he’s making performing comedy in such strange way really work for him. Watch the interview here.

Please Enjoy’s Chris Garcia Late Night Network Debut on Corden

At this point, it’s kind of crazy that Chris Garcia hasn’t done late night until just last night. Chris has a half hour special on Comedy Central, a handful of great TV appearances, and been even featured on This American Life. All throughout those times, he has been so damn funny with his distillation of his identity as a Cuban immigrant with immigrant parents.

Still, a chance for Garcia to take the stage is one to be relished and we hope you enjoy Chris’ first (of hopefully many more) late night sets here, taped on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Zach Sherwin is doing “it” yet again.

By “it”, we mean putting on a dazzling display of how linguistically masterful he is via having comedians solve a crossword puzzle live on stage that is superbly weaved into a theme with jokes, stories, etc. all throughout. It’s quite the spectacle to see especially if you’re wondering how solving a crossword can be a live show.

This edition, this Wed. Aug. 7th at Dynasty Typewriter at the Hayworth Theater, will feature Chris Garcia, Irene Tu, and a “special surprise solver”. Tickets are $10 right now and $15 on the day of. Please go get them here.

Also, if you can’t make it to this one, “it” (The Crossword Show with Zach Sherwin) will be happening monthly at Dynasty Typewriter for the rest of the year!

Chris Garcia, Joey Izzo, Reign Morton, and Más Mejor do envision how a “weed sommelier” might be in a documentary in a great, off-beat way.

However, we wouldn’t be surprised at all if this wasn’t far from the truth as weed sommeliers do exist. If there are anything like wine sommeliers, this sketch might be bordering on a mini-doc.

Chris Garcia Is Developing Sitcom Based on His Life and Family with Fox and The Lonely Island

Chris Garcia’s story and comedy being put into a TV series is long overdue.

Son to Cuban immigrants that made it out of Cuba into the U.S. despite the odds being against them, Chris Garcia has become a truly wonderful comedian.

Over the last couple of years, he’s really delved into his identity as a Cuban American and you’ve probably heard some of the stories on NPR, WTF with Marc Maron, or his fantastic stand-up album, Laughing and Crying at the Same Time.

Now, Chris might get to tell the story of his life and his family trying to make it on television over at Fox thanks to The Lonely Island. It being Fox and The Lonely Island and Garcia, we can see how this project could potentially be like no other family sitcom you’ve ever seen before (that’s a really good thing).

When you’re a monster of a human being, you often wouldn’t be self-aware of your own horrific nature. In fact, you have probably gotten so far below the depths of your humanity that ever having a metaphorical mirror held up to you is probably an exercise in futility.

The “secret” Pablo Escobar sitcom, It’s Pablo, “uncovered” by Más Mejor shines a light on this phenomenon in the latest episode.

It’s Pablo, their latest release, surmises a secretly made sitcom starring Pablo Escobar in the style of old family sitcoms of yesteryear.

Thanks to the minds of Joey Devine, Zach Gonzalez-Landis and Chris Garcia, the performances of Chris, Becky Garcia and Frankie Quiñones, and the direction of Teddy Filson and Alex Koll, you now have a perfect dessert for after Narcos season 2.

Chris Garcia, a Comedian You Should Definitely Know About, Made One of Those ‘Everyday’ Montages of His Amazing Past Year

August 15, 2016
Uncategorized
chris garcia, everyday, life of a comedian, montage

Four years ago, one Rory Scovel made a montage of video that he had captured everyday for an entire year. The result was a pretty amazing glimpse into the life of what a modern working comedian is like.

After that, Brooks Wheelan made an ‘everyday montage’ showing his whirlwind life getting hired on SNL and everything in between.

Now, Chris Garcia, one of our favorite comedians whose name should be on the tip of your tongue if it’s not already, just made his very own ‘everyday’ montage that shows him globetrotting from Dubai to all around LA to Hawaii for comedy as well as a stop to Cuba to get in touch with his roots. Like Brooks and Rory’s, it’s a look unlike you’d ever normally see what Garcia’s life is, day in, night out over the last 365 days.
