channel 101, indie tv, short form

Channel 101, the vaunted, long-standing indie short form TV series is still standing strong as we head towards a year of being locked down due to COVID-19. Though virtual, they’ve been as active as they have ever been with their monthly screenings (in addition to whole new audio series program they started a few months back).

Their first screening for 2021 is set for this Saturday with an early and late screening at 8PM PT/11PM ET and 10PM PT/1AM ET respectively. You can tune into this brand spankin’ new edition of Channel 101 on their Twitch at twitch.tv/channel101official/.

Also, note that you can (and maybe should) always submit your own Channel 101 pilot to enter into the Channel 101 fray. Get more info on that here.

Channel 101 is fully back in action.

OK, it’s still virtual, done over Twitch, but everything else including the ten 5 min. shows (5 returning favorites, 5 new pilots), the audience vote to renew 5 shows, the two screenings, and the hysterical, mind-and-genre bending madness (that made Channel 101 into the indie TV/comedy/animation institution) is all back.

Please join in for Channel 101’s very first (hey, this will be historic as well) virtual full-length (by Channel 101 standards) screening next Sat. Aug. 29th at 8PM PT/11PM ET and 10PM PT/1AM ET, all for FREE, over at twitch.tv/channel101official.

Channel 101 Is Taking Submissions for 5 Minute TV Pilots Again

News
channel 101, open call, submissions

The mighty indie short form TV institution known as Channel 101 (pretty much the birthplace of Rick & Morty FYI) has kept themselves going throughout lockdown, despite not being able to have their renowned monthly screenings. They’ve screened entire series from their archives, taken up audio pilots, and even done micro versions of a normal Channel 101 program via Twitch.

Now, with several months having passed in quarantine, they’re now ready to take on doing a full-length, virtual Channel 101, which means that they’ll be accepting brand new 5 minute or less pilots to enter the Channel 101 fray.

The deadline to submit is by Aug. 25th at submissions@channel101.com. The screening will take place only a few days later on Sat. Aug. 29th. Find out more about Channel 101 at channel101.com .

Channel 101, Renowned LA Short Form TV Series, Is Now Taking Submissions for Shows That Are 30 Seconds

April 8, 2020
News
channel 101, short films, submissions

Channel 101 stands as kind of a local legend here in LA, the birthplace of such wonderfully weird cultural juggernauts as Rick & Morty. It is, and has been for several years, a competitive short form TV competition that has cultivated such an innovative and tightly knit community that makes some of the best, genre-bending, fiercely independent series that have ever been made.

Certainly, this is one of those things in LA that we’d very much like to keep around/going. As movie theaters are still very much closed right now, namely their home theater The Downtown Independent in DTLA, they can’t really go about business as usual.

So, instead of sourcing 5 minute pilots and shows that have been renewed from the previous month by vote, they’re doing a condensed version of Channel 101 that is look for 30 second shows to feature virtually for their Channel 101: Hot 30 Virtual Screening.

If you’re up for it, you have until Wed. Apr. 22nd to submit your 30 second show to 101hot30@gmail.com.

By The Way, You Should Still Be Watching Channel 101

Our last post pointed to Channel 101 being the flashpoint for Rick and Morty.

That was years and years ago, but Channel 101 is still going strong, creating some of the most innovative, independent, experimental short form TV out there.

See for yourself with fan favorites Jason Gudasz’s surrealist sitcom Somewhere in Highland Park and David Seger, Davey Johnson, and Alex Kavutskiy’s meta attempt at a late night show, Late Tonight with Nick Burton.

Also, all of Channel 101 is archived for you to go down a deep, deep, weird, wondrous rabbit hole.

In case you weren’t aware, Rick and Morty had its humble beginnings from a beautiful thing called Channel 101.

Channel 101 is the indie TV institution created by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab that still runs to this day with its own self-sustaining creative community. It’s also the place where Harmon met his Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland.

Get more of that story in this first part of an Adult Swim behind-the-scenes series that explains how the brilliant hit, Rick and Morty came to be.

Watch The Most Insane Send Up of KCRW and NPR’s Elvis Mitchell Ever by DeMorge Brown

Esteemed film critic Elvis Mitchell has made a name for himself for years through his insights on cinema at NPR and KCRW. With that, his voice, look, and persona capture a certain spirit of dry, high brow film theory discussions.

For Channel 101, DeMorge Brown sent up Elvis Mitchell in a faux interview series called ScreenShots with Elvis Mitchell that is, well, what it’d be like you were watching an Elvis Mitchell interview while tripping on acid.

Even if you’re not familiar with Mitchell or Channel 101, you can agree that more one-on-one interviews should be as otherworldly as they are here.

Even though this is a monthly screening series that just took a month off, it’s been far too long.

Channel 101 took July off and left us with wondering what’s going to happen with bitches, a baby that might be killed, a kid named Markees, a probot, and a King of YouTube.
