The Creek & The Cave to Reopen in Austin After Closing in NYC

February 12, 2021
News
atx, austin, creek and cave

While comedy clubs/venues around the country have been closing, Austin, being one of the biggest comedy scenes in America that is actively doing in-person shows during the pandemic, seems to be gaining clubs left and right.

Yesterday, we reported to you that Cap City Comedy Club reversed its announcement that they were closing their doors for good and will reopen in October. It turns out that they will be getting another club as NYC’s beloved venue The Creek & The Cave is moving down to Austin, TX. They had to close their doors due to the persistent lockdown for performance venues in NYC after over a decade of faithfully serving the NYC comedy scene from open mikers all the way to Colin Quinn (he workshopped a whole special there).

Since live comedy is currently happening in Austin, Creek & Cave founder Rebecca Trent has taken that opportunity to given The Creek & The Cave a second life down there as well as growing the ATX comedy scene even bigger than it already is. As of April Fools’ Day this year, their doors will open. You can follow for more updates @creekandcaveatx on Instagram.

Austin’s Revered Cap City Comedy Club Will Actually Be Reopening in the Fall

February 11, 2021
News
austin, cap city comedy club

Though announced that it was closing its doors for good in September 2020, Cap City Comedy Club has had a reversal of fortune and will be reopening sometime this Fall.

The legendary club had served audiences from Austin and all around for over 3 decades, but suffered devastating financial losses due to the continued lockdown as a result of COVID-19. Thusly, the decision for a permanent closure was previously made.

Right at the moment, live comedy is happening in Austin, TX (though COVID-19 still runs rampant throughout America and both Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan recently contracted the virus while performing in Austin) and some comedians have made their way over there, even from LA, to do in-person shows. Austin has had a robust comedy scene for more than few years now and that is even under more of a spotlight since LA, NYC, and Chicago are not nearly as open as Texas is.

Whether or not the rollout of the vaccine improves will obviously determine reopening for comedy clubs/venues, but, at the very least, it’s great to hear that Cap City, one of comedians’ favorite comedy clubs will survive to the other side of the pandemic.

We're excited to announce that @CapCityComedy will be re-opening its doors this Fall!

We will continue our tradition of booking national acts, Austin-based comedians & cutting-edge up + comers, now in a new location at The Domain

SXSW was cancelled.

Moontower was originally postponed to next month, but then got postponed to next year.

So, it would seem that Austin, TX was going to be without a comedy festival for 2020.

Cue ColdTowne Theater’s Austin Sketch Fest, which has stepped up to the virtual plate and will be live-streaming their festivities this week on Thurs. Aug. 21st and Fri. Aug. 22nd. Sketch groups and performers from all around the country are taking part including James Adomian and Anthony Atamanuik who will do the 2020 version of their beloved Trump vs. Bernie pairing and will go up as Trump vs. Biden (Adomian, of course, has a pitch perfect Biden impression) and the ever inventive and splendidly mischievous Jamie Loftus with her solo show, Boss Whom Is Girl, that expertly parodies tragic entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes.

Along side them will be these sketch groups: Secret Crush, Archnemesis, Victrola, Latinx Comedy Pechanga, TV Party, Pendulum, Royale, Rat City, The Executives, Self Esteem Party, Dynamo, Chlane, Red & Yellow, Prayer Circle, After School Snack, and Pete Parsons.

Best of all, you’ll be able to stream this at ColdTowne’s Twitch channel for FREE. Tune in on 8/22 at 4:30PM PT/6:30PM CT/7:30PM ET and on 8/22 at 3:30PM PT/5:30PM CT/6:30PM ET.

Moontower Comedy Festival Rescheduled for Sept. 16th-19th

March 25, 2020
News, Uncategorized
atx, austin, comedy festival, moontower, texas

Large gatherings/events of all kinds all over the world in March and April got cancelled and postponed due to COVID-19. Even this year’s Summer Olympics in Tokyo might get pushed back. Certainly, live comedy has had to take a pause right along with the rest of the world.

Inevitably, the postponements will get followed up by rescheduling (which we ought to note might be subject to change as everything currently is). Still, it’s hopeful to hear that Austin’s big time annual comedy shindig, The Moontower Comedy Festival is, for now, set to return Wed. Sept. 16th- Sat. Sept. 19th. Hopefully, by then (even before then would be better), there will be some relative return to normalcy and going out and gathering with folks will be allowed again.

Line-up, tickets, and specifics have yet to be announced, but we will absolutely keep you updated.

One of our absolute favorite podcasts, The Dollop, has just set their official dates for their latest tour across North America, which includes one stop in Reykjavik, Iceland.

While hosts Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds have toured extensively through Australia, this will be the first time that Dave is going to a non-English speaking country really giving some international touring cred to The Dollop.

Also, a second NYC show has just been added FYI.

You can get tickets and the most up-to-date schedule of this tour right here. If you’re aiming to go, you’ll want to get the tickets quick by the way.

SXSW Offering Up the Late Andy Ritchie’s Album “King Ding-a-Ling” for Free

It’s kind of beautiful to see Austin take care of his own.

Comedian Andy Ritchie unfortunately passed away last year and we all lost a great talent. While Ritchie was making his way in comedy in LA at the time, he came up in comedy first in Austin, TX.

So, SXSW, Austin’s big annual festival that has now featured a significant comedy portion for awhile now, is honoring his memory by offering his one and only album King Ding-a-Ling for free.

Please join in preserving Andy Ritchie’s comedy and download and listen to his album here thanks to SXSW and Stand Up! Records.

If you’re having a bad 2016 thus far, look forward to these.

If you don’t have a chance to catch either David Cross on his Making America Great Again tour or Kyle Kinane while he tours across the country this spring (and making a stop in Australia), fret not. At the end of each of their tours, they’ll be taping a brand new comedy special.

Cross will be taping his Making America Great Again special while at Austin’s Moontower Comedy & Oddity Festival in The Paramount Theater on Fri. Apr. 22nd. Tickets go on sale Thurs. Feb. 11th here.

Kinane will be taping his latest special at The Metro in Chicago, IL on Sat. May 21st. Tickets for the 7:30PM and 11PM are now on sale.

OK, that should be enough advance warning to be able to catch both.

So, if we’re all lucky, Hannibal Buress will get to do things like this on his Comedy Central series Why?

While on his Comedy Camisado tour, Buress opted to stay a little bit longer in Austin, TX to not only appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live, but also see if he could drum poorly for some band during their SXSW set.

Luckily, Speedy Ortiz obliged Hannibal on their last song.

With Gibberish Rap and this drumming performance, Hannibal might accidentally have a musical career like Jennifer Lawrence with that Hunger Games song.

This week, Jimmy Kimmel is back in Austin, TX for SXSW taping Jimmy Kimmel Live. Not only is Kimmel is making sure to visit more of Austin sights, but making sure both the world and the Greater Austin area know about them.

After asking for submissions by local Austin businesses if they wanted to be part of making a local TV spot, Jimmy Kimmel picked video rental store Vulcan Video (seems like Austin’s version of Cinefile or Vidiots) and enlisted Matthew McConaughey to make a very “local style” ad.

Watch it all go down here.
