As to who they tap for the gig, The Independent Spirit Awards have a pretty good track record for who presides over their hosting duties including Patton Oswalt, Nick Kroll & John Mulaney, Sarah Silverman, Eddie Izzard, John Waters, and more.

Added to that list will be SNL star and truly endless delight no matter what voice or character she is playing, Melissa Villaseñor. Villaseñor’s uncanny impressions and endearing characters will serve her well throughout a Spirit Awards that will very likely be a mix of a limited capacity in-person event and a virtual live-stream since it will happen on  Thurs. Apr. 22nd (and the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine will very likely still be a big issue then).

All that aside, we remember first seeing Melissa impersonate Owen Wilson far after midnight on the weekly madcap variety show, Tomorrow! w/Ron Lynch for the first time and suspecting that something big would be coming her way. We’re very glad that time has come.
