Pick of the Day: The Civil Dead (in LA) 3/10, 3/15, 3/16

March 3, 2023
News
civil dead, clay tatum, los angeles comedy, los feliz 3, whitmer thomas

Though one might not have been able to predict a marvelous indie horror comedy would come from two members of a punk comedy outfit known as Powerviolence nearly a decade ago, there was always promise of something satisfyingly offbeat and originally funny from the group that had stars (and writer and director) of The Civil Dead (2023), Whitmer Thomas and Clay Tatum.

Tatum and Thomas have probably made the most grounded ghost movie in cinema history, probably even more so than A Ghost Story (2017), and weave nuanced humor into the shaky friendship between two estranged friends coming together through one of them being a ghost and the other being the only other person who can see them. Thomas and Tatum do a splendid job tapping comedy out of the day-to-day logistics of being a ghost and how it would affect any of their relationships, if they can find anyone to talk to. Take a gander for yourself with the trailer here.

Pretty fun, huh?

Well, The Civil Dead has been touring from theater to theater across the U.S. and is returning to LA via The Los Feliz 3 starting next Friday. There will be a limited engagement thanks to American Cinematheque on Mar. 10th, 15th, & 16th at 10PM, complete with an in-person intro from Clay and Whit. Do take the chance to see The Civil Dead here in a movie theater if you can with other folks. Tickets are only $13 and you can (and should) go get them here.

There isn’t much debate when it comes to the comedic brilliance of Elaine May. From her time as part of trailblazing comedy duo Nichols & May to her work both in front of and behind the camera throughout her extensive and hysterical filmography.

As such, the films of Elaine May are always worth a retrospective, especially when comedies don’t often to get to play at revival theaters. Luckily, the Los Feliz 3 is just about to reopen with American Cinematheque at the helm and they are indeed honoring Elaine May with a weekly screening series that will feature the likes of A New Leaf, Ishtar, and Mikey and Nickey.

Called Elaine May Mondays, these classics will screen on Mondays at 7PM PT, then Fridays at 4PM PT. Tickets are $13 GA and $8 for American Cinematheque members. Go get more info and tickets here.
