Pick of the Day: Bad Play (in LA) 12/3 & 12/10

It has always struck us as strange that theatrical comedy, comedy stage plays, etc. seem to be distinctly separated from the rest of live comedy (stand-up, improv, sketch, clowning, etc.). The whole goal is to make the audience laugh for a period of time and yet, very rarely does a full length comedic play find its way to the likes of a comedy theater.

Thankfully, that seems to be changing as many comedy folks are coming out of the pandemic wanting to try all sorts of different things in comedy. Enter in Bad Play, a very sarcastic “love letter” to American theater that’s every bit of sharp as sketch comedy, but being so for the entirety of a full play. The cast and writers Brad Beideman, Brian Fitzgerald, Lyndsey Kempf, Eli Lutsky do a brilliant job playing up tropes and themes of so many productions that carry their own Playbill and you don’t have to have a subscription to the Pantages to have gotten all of the jokes.

Perhaps, this will end up being the bridge between all these different disciplines in comedy that we’ve been quietly hoping for? Bad Play is certainly funny enough to take on the task.

It’s unabashedly absurd fun and you really ought to not miss such a rare gem playing its next two engagements at the Yard Theater next month, Saturday Dec. 3rd and Dec. 10th at 9PM. Tickets are $10 and we highly suggest you snag them right now right here.
