Miss Mississippi Comedy: Red State Comics Raising Funds for Abortion Access (in NYC)

Miss Mississippi Comedy is a pageant-themed stand-up show featuring a mostly queer lineup of comedians from Red States. We take a broad view of what can be considered a “Red State”; although our primary focus is on highlighting comedians hailing from the American South, we also welcome comedians originally from states or countries that have otherwise criminalized abortion access or worked to limit women’s reproductive healthcare.

Since the fall of Roe v. Wade, reproductive justice and abortion access efforts in rural areas are needed now more than ever. Notwithstanding the critical need for legal and political change in this area, we also need places for joy—radical joy—and, yes, laughter in spite of this worrying retrenchment of rights. Miss Mississippi Comedy seeks to bring this joy directly to those communities who need it most, and to unite comedians and their fans with the wider fight for reproductive justice. We believe our series can play a vital role in helping these organizations raise awareness and funds in the face of unprecedented challenges, while simultaneously creating community, uplifting diverse voices, and sharing our love of comedy.
